Hey guys i wanted to post on here because im having issues on my level 5 Iksar Necro. I find i am being forced to kill yellow mobs because the blue-white mobs only give 1% experience and when i end up going after the yellows they are tough as hell and i can pretty much only kill these by burning through my mana pool and possibly some health because i don't want my pet to die because of loss of DPS.
Is this normal for the experience penalty for Iksar/Necro? I know its -30% but it seems like 1% a kill at lvl 5 is a bit much and I might be doing something wrong. Let me know your thoughts on this.

Have to do 51% of damage or pet steals a huge margin.
1-12 on a necro, or any int caster for that matter, is a giant PITA. My advice to you, which is what I did as an Iksar Necro, is to duo or find a group until at least level 12. Most people with a little extra plat just pay to have their caster PL'd for the first 20 levels.

So much this. Although I would say it does get a little better at 8 for most classes. Until you get more of your class defining spells most casters are just really crappy nukers who can't take damage at all.

This post is not about complaining that the experience is slow. The question stated in the OP was if i was doing something wrong or is this the normal amount i should expect.

Necros have 1-12 easier than any other caster due to lifetap and pets. Grab a dragoon dirk and start going to town on mobs along side your pet (buy him a rusty halbred or other fancy 2hander). Lifetap when you get low/every other mob. It's a recipe for non-stop newbie yard slaughtering.
Edit to add: Stick to dark blues, even and yellow cons will hit too hard. You'll only need to cast lifetap, and even then only every other mob.

Yup, trying to do 51% damage as a necro is ridiculous as well. Give the skele a rusty and be glad you don't have to stare at a spell book for 4 of every 5 minutes.

Wait till you get to level 54 or 59 and have to kill 50 DB mobs to get 1%.:eek:
P1999 is hard mode, and you are not doing anything wrong. :D A Necro is a darn good class to play on here.

Your pet is doing over half the damage so it's stealing a lot of your exp. To avoid this, nuke / melee like crazy in order to outdamage your pet, or just group. As soon as you're in a group (doesn't matter how big) your pet will no longer steal exp. At higher levels it's much easier to outdamage your pet with DoTs / waiting to send in your pet, but at low levels it is tough.

duo/trio in the pit in FoB until 8 - always get a max pet and give it the tok shons or whatever the highest damage rusty weapon is that drops there.
@ 8, get a necro buddy and start killing in Kurn's at the ent. From 8 - 20, it is pretty fun in Kurn's. Bone Walk , ftw.
EQ mobs give XP proportional to their level squared. So if a L1 mob gives 10 XP; a L2 mob will give 40 and a L6 mob 360 - huge differences. If you were L55, killing a L50 mob would net you 25,000 XP, while a L55 mob would 30,250 XP.
As you level up, PCs fall behind NPCs dramatically. Casters do relatively better, because with root or snare/fear you can avoid taking damage and only have to deal with the increase in hitpoints (and there is charm!). So if at L5, you have Warrior > Necro > MOB, at L50 you have MOB > Necro > Warrior, a complete inversion. Therefore as you level up (and get the rest of your spells, like Darkness, Root, and Undead Charm) you'll start to see solo XP outpace group XP.
TLDR: who cares. The point of EQ is to go out and make a few friends and have fun dungeon crawling. The endgame scene on this server is straight up terrible: it has 10x the players it can support, and they 'compete' by seeing who can sit there waiting for the mob to pop.

Use your level 1 pet spell. He won't out dps you as much. That should enable the killing of blues for exp again. Also, the lvl1 mobs that still give exp, while you're messing just send your pet and let him do 100% during your downtime.

Additionally , the cur scale pelts quest is good for a bit (past when it should be). Just slaughter those pups. It's also a free backpack
Also note.
Your chosen race is Iksar. They are slow leveling due to penalty's.
Nothing new here.

So I'm 13 DE necro now and I find that if I send my pet immediately, if he's also the highest available pet level and has a good set of weapons it seems like if I don't land all my spells the first time and keep the Emmy feared then he has a chance of beating me out on dps still. So keep in mind even after you get your lvl 12 spells you may want to hold your pet off for the first 20% or so to guarantee you get the ful exp.
Other than that, once you're 12+ you're a real necro will a full line up of spells to handle yellows constantly. Even stuff that may seem like you should try it as long as your FM to begin with.

I guess just a tiny tip from leveling my necro recently.
To avoid the pet eating my xp, I fear kite until I've done my half and send the pet in at 49% and let him chase it down for the rest while I med.
I'm not pro by far at the class, but just what I've been doing :)

At Orc highway in Oasis I was snare + 2 dots and fear. Pet in at 70% and I seem to put dps the pet. On occasion if there is a resist or add sometimes I would pull pet off early. Like, when they start running at 20% and I still have dots on I pull pet to make sure. It's a judgement thing.
However, as an update in level 20 now. Still I'm sitting the majority of the time and I haven't needed to Leach to get life back from lich, I have to leach when I take damage. Additionally, next lich is lvl 20 and I think I'll lose 1hp sitting so maybe I will notice a difference going forward.
