Barbarian Shaman melee skills

I was just curious if it was just me or if anyone else seems to have a problem upping their melee skills for a Barbarian Shaman. I am currently level 8 and have solo'd my way there. I use melee a lot and yet my skills are only in the high 30's. I can fight for hours with no improvement to skills. Was really just wondering if they were really that slow in increasing.

Shamans only get 4 weaponskill points per level, rather than 5 for melee characters. So at level 8, your max melee skill is 36. If they're in the high 30s, you're maxed for your level.
