View Full Version : Problems after Server Restart
Is anyone else experiencing longer than normal zone times, and a lot more going LD while zoning since the server reboot yesterday? I know I am seeing a lot more of it,and in the past, my connection has always been very stable, now, I am usually having very, very long zone times, and often going LD on zoning.

I have also been having issues, just started in the last couple days. I frequently disconnect while zoning, causing my screen to freeze on the last frame of the zone for a long time before booting me out to the login screen (before server select). I also have to attempt to log in several times, as it often will not connect to the server (eqemu's server I guess? since it's for server selection, not just p99).

I had zoning issues after the restart. Mine were:
Zone-----never load, task mgr kill eqgame.exe, start eq back up, wait for ld char to get kicked out, log back in. EVERY TIME I ZONED!
Now: My zone times are noticeably longer, but I do zone successfully.

For several days I keep going LD or 'desyncing' randomly, seems to happen once every couple hours. Tried fudging spell effects, I'm using eqw.. not sure what else to try. It started just before server crash. Previously I never had a single problem with LD's.

Yes this has been happening to me as well. Extremely long zone times, crash, reboot, etc.
I had this happen to be me before as well and lowering my graphics seemed to fix it but it is back again.
I wonder if Dev/Management have any issue due to the proximity to the server?

Just don't zone, doy.

Addendum: Last night I had to kill the eqgame.exe process again, twice. Then log back in after zoning.
~100ms ping time constantly and 0 loss according to what the in game meter reads. (same as before)
Since it was a DB issue, I wonder if there is something up with disk latency after the fact. Only monitoring can tell. :( Just throwing it out there.....

I'm having this problem as well and it started yesterday. When I zone, the game will freeze (not respond) and I'll have to close it down and restart, wait for my character to not be ld, etc. After crashing and restarting I will be able to zone normally again but after a while of playing it will crash again if i zone out. I have also noticed that on occasion the server list is empty. I'll have to logout and back in to get the server lists to appear. I have never had that issue until yesterday as well. I also encountered one more issue last night; After I crashed/restarted and got to the character select, i saw the spell client updating thing as if i needed to patch. I thought this was odd so i went to the forum to check if there was a new patch while i had been playing but there wasnt. i logged out and restarted again and all my characters were there like normal.

Edit: I also get the "spell files out of date" screen occasionally as others have mentioned.
AMD Phenom II Quad Core
5 GB DDR2
GeForce 560 Ti
Windows 7
Solutions I have tried:
Disabled loading screen art, re-applied latest p99 files, tried running with WinEQ 2.0 & without, run as administrator & in compatibility mode for Windows 98, 2000, & XP, added every version of "everquest.exe, eqgame.exe" etc that I could find to allowed programs list on firewall, tried disabling firewall.
Definitely only have a problem when zoning/loading. I played for a few hours lag-free without swapping zones. When I zoned, it did load after a while but from then on I had about 300+ ping, with actions some times delayed up to several seconds. I can play on other games with no latency.

Yes I'm having this issue with 90% of attempts to zone within the last day. Almost never before then, was maybe 5% of times before. Loading screen set to NONE does not help at all.
Nothing has changed on my end. Looks to be a server issue.

Do any of you have clients altered in any way from a fresh Titanium and then the P99 files added? You know, like better world textures or anything like that? Should be pretty fast to do a complete fresh install if anyone wants to try it and report back. My stuff has been fine. Also I am on Comcast, it could be an ISP issue, what are you using?

Using Centurylink in the Northwest. I do have improved textures and a different set of hotbars, so I'll try a fresh install.

How is that working Shodo?

Haven't made it home from work yet, will be testing in twenty minutes or so. Can't remember if I kept the copy of titanium I *purchased,* so it might be a couple hours before the new install is done.

Have a completely fresh install, applied p99 files and followed the getting started guide - have not touched a single setting or file past that. Still have the issue - loaded in alright (took a little while), attempted to zone to everfrost from blackburrow - I did zone successfully, eventually. Once in EF, I camped to char select (also successful). When I tried to "enter world" again, I crashed to the login screen after several minutes of waiting.

Thank you for all the info, looking over it, also I wish we had more ISP info. Running 2 accounts here, my wifes and mine, still no issues. Same install your using...Trying to get an idea of what is griefing this.

It's looking a lot like an ISP and or possibly a DNS issue, If it is, it sucks that it is happening during double xp, but it will clear up like a cold, eventually. I can't see much more in the info, double checking.

My wife and I both work tech and we talked about it. You could try a restart of your modem and or possibly call the company to have them send a signal to reset it.

05-30-2015, 03:35 AM
Unfortunately, I've done both of those things already :( Left the modem & router off overnight and rebooted in the morning, and called Centurylink who basically just said "well we don't see anything wrong, so it's not our fault - but we'll perform a reset for you!"
Guess i'll try manually resetting to factory and updating the firmware - not sure what else to do.

For sure, that double xp is really nice. I can't think of anything else that could be causing the issue. I wish I knew more.

At the risk of jinxing myself, the issue appears to have been resolved without further action. I've been on for a few hours, zoned many times (even faster than normal) with no issues. So if it was a DNS issue I guess it got worked out - woohoo! (Hopefully some others have had a change as well)

To anyone still having these problems:-
1. Do you share your connection with anyone else? (people streaming Netflix, watching Twitch, etc).
If so, get everyone to stop for a minute...and try zoning places again.
I lived in shared accommodation a few years back and shared an internet connection with 6 others. Those bastards loved to stream the football, stream films they didn't want to buy or download, and do other things that hogged every kilobyte of bandwidth. At that point I was struggling to see the server list on the server select screen and would sometimes disconnect while zoning.
So I think it could be a bandwidth issue for some people.
2. Are you playing on a wireless connection?
Wireless just adds another layer of crap to your internet connection. If you're loading Facebook/Amazon/etc you won't notice the connection occasionally stalling/dropping out but if you're gaming you more than likely would notice a ping spike for a moment or two.
Get near your modem/router if you're not already near it and plug an ethernet cable in (they're cheap to buy, most routers come with a short one at least). That'll do a lot to stabilize your connection.
Basically try and eliminate your connection from router to wireless card from being the issue.
Try copying your P99 folder onto a USB stick and seeing if it works on another computer/laptop/etc. Eliminate these things... it's got to be something, and if you can narrow the field down you're more likely to find solutions.
Take a laptop with P99 on it and test it at a friend's house on their connection... and crucially, tell them about the red server and sit them down on it for an hour ;)

Swish:
Not sharing the connection with anyone. It has happened during times when I was only playing EQ (no netflix, etc) and I am using a wired connection.
I am not seeing any packet loss during normal game-play either (based on F11 stats). Also usually around 55ms latency.
Going to post a dbg log when another crash happens. However, on a side note...
I highly doubt that its an issue with anyones hardware. DNS issues, Tier1/Tier2 network congestion, or maybe just an EQEmu bug... but lots of the ideas mentioned in this thread have an extremely low likelihood of causing the issue - computers just dont work that way.

For those having the issue (has been behaving for me the last 12 hours or I would)...
Try a different EQEmu server. Try something like bouncing back and forth between freeport/commons or gfay/felwithe. Report your findings.
My own EQEmu server is called "Wistaria (Test)". Feel free to use it. My bandwidth should be fine for up to 20 people at once.

The issue definitely seems to be a problem with the P99 server. Had it happen again in the middle of a VoIP call (meaning connection was stable or id have lost that too).

Its still happening. The critical issue is that our clients are unable to connect to the next zone server.
YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS Waiting to connect to zone... Character %S
Could it be the players? Sure... but when its happening to this many people all of a sudden, its far more likely to be an issue with the server.
Could be due to firewall, anti-ddos, running out of available ports, or any number of server related things.

Was dumped right into the ocean of tears (was taking boat) from this bug. At best, this issue is really frustrating to deal with.
Could the devs please acknowledge that they are aware of this? I posted the link to this thread when bringing it up to Nilbog in Sirken's stream yesterday but have no idea if he took it seriously. He did respond that its a known issue with satellite internet, but I promptly let him know that my connection has always been very a stable wired connection.

Can other people that are having the issue post a log from WinMTR to 66.55.145.2 ?
I'm wondering if other people are getting the same high amount of packet loss with ntt.net
Edit: Nevermind. Initially I was concerned about the packet loss but similar posts (http://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/2gvqnt/what_is_normal_packet_loss_in_mtr/) have had the ping issue debunked. Its also inconsistent to think its a ping issue when my connection health (F11) shows 0% packet loss consistently. I dont think its ever gone below 100% aside from once.

Posted a question about this on the eqemu forums... got this answer (http://www.eqemulator.org/forums/showthread.php?p=240618)
TL;DR; the client should attempt to connect to the server multiple times, but until less than a year ago, the server ignored retries. P99 might not be using this "fix" since its so recent (https://github.com/EQEmu/Server/issues/300)

I'm also getting the blank server select occasionally the last day, but this is more an issue with login.eqemulator.net and not with P99. Also got the spell file out of date issue randomly, and dont have a clue why (maybe P99's DLL file failed to load properly)
