View Full Version : Which Druid race to chose?

serjordanmormont
05-18-2015, 12:33 PM
Thinking about rolling a druid and am debating the race.

Leaning toward Human or Wood Elf although I could be persuaded otherwise.

Am I missing out on any key gear or going to have a harder time by going one race over another? Or should I just make the aesthetic choice I like best?

Any help is appreciated.

Generally I love hobbits. In EQ classic they look far too ridiculous for my taste lol.

Human cause fashionquest, although I think Vermiculated + GE boots looks cool on most all races. Otherwise, no contest - Hobbit cause 5% faster leveling and innate hide which is crucial for AFKs (while medding or just in general) in dangerous areas (sup camo/camo wears off, hide never does) and innate sneak. Game changers.

This is false.

There are like... 3 level 60 Half-Elf Druids on the server. They are clearly the most battle tested and superior among all Druid races. Plus you are so unique, people don't even ask me for ports or SoW anymore because they can't even figure out what class I am because I'm so unique.

Go Half-Elf. Become Legendary.

Wood elves in the 30-45 level range look sick with all that brown gold black plate and an ice cream cone.

But halfling are my fave.

Would say human cus humans are also awesome, but they are at their worst in banded so...

It's a tough class to decide.

Woodelf is nice if the tunare necklace is fixed (mana free basic root comes in handy...) Also get Hide (hardly works).

Humans can wear sweet robes

Halflings get 5% exp bonus, sneak and hide (hardly works)

Half Elfs get to be bards

I thought long and hard about race choice, considering that only robe wearing races can equip robe of the spring and only Tunare worshipers can use the root neck in Velious.

One item that was very important that I didn't realize was Hide - as I use this to break charms. Sure you can cast invis or buy a 6k goblin ring - but Hide is free and I've used it for 56 levels. Also - it is invaluable for afking.

However - I did not enjoy staring at the back of the wood elf - so I chose Halfling.

I have no regrets about this choice - I can actually wear the WC cap - +5 MR, and I enjoy watching my little fellow waddle through Norrath.

I'd choose human, not a lot of human druids around. You will have the unique factor, and you can wear robes!

I played a druid for a while and found it boring. At lower levels you're better off soloing and when you hit the higher levels, you'll get tired of quad-kiting by yourself (if you can find a zone where bards aren't swarm kiting =P). As a healer, while druids are good, they lack the utility that makes them a more desirable healer than a cleric or a shaman. Shamans are also very popular on blue so finding one to heal your group is usually pretty easy. While a cleric's ability to heal is pretty self-explanatory, the shaman can haste, slow, buff, root, cc, dot, nuke, etc...

For solo cash camps, there are a few camps that you will be able to handle well, but you'll never really have that solo/duo power that many other classes will have. I can think of one exception being Freeti in SolB, given a druid's ability to charm bats. I'm not sure if you can solo the noble, but you shouldn't have much of a problem with the imps/bats/bugs for Xping.

You will always have the luxury of porting yourself and that will become even more invaluable in the vast wastes of Velious. A druid is far more entertaining than playing a wizard overall, so if you're going purely for portability, the druid wins out. With the guild <Dial A Port>, however, finding transportation in Norrath isn't as much of a chore as it once was, making it surprisingly easy to navigate.

Now, I would absolutely play a druid on Red in a PvP environment. They can port around for targets, heal, track (i guess), they get a rain-line of spells which are incredibly destructive, they can stack 2 lines of DoT spells and they can nuke for significant amounts of damage. In groups, they are viable healers because of their offensive power in the event of PvP and they can evac later on to prevent PvP (or PvE) death in your group.

In the end you have to play what you think you'll enjoy. Although, leveling a druid as a first character isn't all that bad, seeing you can use him to power-level your next characters down the line.

I guess I should have put JK on there somewhere.. I played a halfling druid on live for 65 levels and loved it. (well that is until I read something and was duped into killing Mayor Grubbin and became kos to Rivervale that is a story unto itself) Never believe a man offering easy Jade Reavers..

I was helping a friend with his epic and he read that Mayor Grubbin could drop Jade Reaver so against my better judgement I helped him. He was supposed to wait til I zoned to finish him off but an overzealous rogue who ran by decided to help finish him off before I was out of zone. Who would have thunked you could go from max to kos from killing 1 npc.

Halflings can use the hide/sneak bug to walk past see invis (not undead) mobs. For pure utility, it isn't even close.

My best friend's mom was KoS in Freeport on Live because a guy ran up to her begging for heals. She didn't know he was fighting Lucan.

She was a human druid though, so she kind of deserved it.

If you are the kind of guy who likes player-player interaction, and will probably keep buffs loaded when you aren't fighting just for the simple pleasure of giving others simple joy.. Then Halfling is the race for you!

Have to consider Velious when making your choice!

- Velious graphics - https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6075

Druids wear leather, and although it might be tinted, you can get an idea of what appeals to you.

- Deity - aside from the Tunare neck, you should also consider that Tunare worshiping druids can get - http://wiki.project1999.com/Gloves_of_Earthcrafting

- Robes - Any druid can wear Robe of the Spring, but the only race with robe graphics (its just a green shirt on others) is human.

- Sneak/Hide - Decide if you want this. There are things that benefit from sneak for questing/banking, but with Velious faction stuff that isn't as much as in classic/kunark. Additionally, hide for afk is nice, but consider where you'll be using it. Hide for charm may be easier, but can be replaced (more reliably) with a ring clicky.

- Other factors - starting areas can be important to some people, as can mustaches!

Druids gain more utility (espec in raid settings) in Velious.

Halfling is the best if you are poor, Wood Elf second best. If you got a bunch of good hand me down gear to start off with then it doesn't matter and you can pick a dumba$$ half elf or a jug headed human.

That's pure BS. Any druid race can start with nothing but a bit of game knowledge and do well. Add a couple backpacks filled with L1 & L5 spells (i.e.. ~ 5pp worth of stuff, include a lightstone if you're human and prefer to play with gamma set low) and starting a druid becomes trivial. Low level EQ is only hard if you don't know the game.
