thinking of trying red. have questions.

So, I've never tried EQ pvp. And I'm new to p99 in general, so I'm considering trying out red.

I love the idea of eq pvp, but I have some concerns. Line trading? Is trading or banking a gank fest? I read through some posts and saw mention of trading rubies instead of Plat for expensive items. Is this true? So, do certain gems have the same buy /sell ratio at merchants? And are then used as currency? Or, is some Plat lost in the converting of the gems->plat? Would that mean that some gems could be purchased or requested for donation of services? Like, gems for ports?

Do I have any of this right? 8P

Also, have my heart set on shaman and enc. I assume shaman is a tad more survivable with heals and cheetah.. but being a pvp server, would being large be a disadvantage of I did troll shaman? Easier to get spotted? In that regard, id want to be iksar for the regen, but is being KOS Everywhere a huge disadvantage on a server where banking is so critical? I know I can just invis bank after 29, but if I'm correct about the gem thing above, wouldn't access to said merchants be important? As I recall cabilis was a bitch to get to and from, even with ports.

Any insight is appreciated. Pending these questions being answered, I'm gunna try to convince my roommate to start on Red with me 8P probably iksar shm for me and maybe necro for him. But if iksar is real hard for a first char on red, id rather go troll and run to neriak.

A lot of clerics out there go with Troll Shaman that way you could farm gear or plats at later stages if no guilds work out.

So we should discount the leaderboard to quantify how good or bad you are in pvp?

What should we use to calculate your pvp skills? How many raids you attended in Empire?

Its a good time but expect to die to twinked alts pretty often. Just keep that in mind and you will enjoy yourself.

Make a lvl 1 mule, park in Nfp. Most trades are done there.
Shaman and enchanter are both good in pvp, I would go enchanter(thats what I rolled).
Send tell to me ingame Qtip or pm me if you roll enchanter and have any questions.

Other then that, good luck and have fun, this is a game.

I went Ogre Shaman. I've loved every minute of it. Sure, you don't get the regen, but frontal stun immunity is the gift that keeps giving.

Was any of the gem stuff I mentioned valid? Or not done at all? I'm more than happy to get some experience in pvp getting my ass Handed to me by some twinks, and I don't mind it being "tough" to need to bank alot... or risk losing your cash.

But is there alot of trade griefing?? Like if I save my ass off for a fungi, and I gunna get robbed trying to finally buy one?

I expect lots of dieing and pvp.. my only concern is Tradeing.

TLDR chanter will be the cheapest to gear and will be the best for farming and pvp and arent as common as shammys and def top 2 int caster for pvp.

I'm pretty casual compared to lots of players on this server, but I've done a dozen trades in plat and never been robbed. Again that's not to say you won't get robbed, but it hasn't been a big part of my experience.

I hear that larger trades are done near banks in cities to avoid robbery (NPCs will attack trouble-starters). Just use common sense, like you would in RL when buying something off craigslist. If dude seems jittery or rushed or manipulative, don't do the deal. Red requires a lot of this type of common sense.

That said I usually carry my plat around in Elf Leaf (low pp loss on exchange) to avoid losing it when I get ganked, which happens a lot.

All the trades I've conducted have either been in items or plat, no gem currency trades in my exp. They might happen but I haven't done it.

enchanters and shamans are the top two farming classes in the game. they are excellent choices for a first character.

enchanters are the top must-kill class in any PvP situation as their dispels and crowd control spells are devastating if left unchecked. they have a hard time killing anyone geared 1v1 due to everyone running around with high magic resist at high level, but they are also the best 1v1 class in the game once you have a shield of the immaculate. aside from runes, they have very low survivability.

shamans are also incredibly strong 1v1 classes as they are better at winning a fight through attrition than any other class. their biggest issue is that they don't often get kill credit because a majority of their damage is done through DoT spells, and if someone zones and dies to a DoT, it's treated as a PvE death. most higher level players will be carrying cure poison/disease potions, which make getting kills much harder. between high AC, heals, cheetah, and SoW boots, they are pretty difficult to kill outdoors. their PvP offensive capabilities diminish the more people there are in a fight, and you will be at your best just being in a full support role with heals.

you are right about large races being at a disadvantage in PvP. for PvE purposes, ogre is the easy choice for shaman. for PvP purposes, i would go with iksar. for style purposes, i would go with troll.

faction isn't really an issue because a vast majority of important factions are easily raised in-game.

almost all trades are done on level 1 characters, most commonly in north freeport since level 1 characters in cities are immune to PvP.

for 15 years ive Hated ogres, just, visually. but the pvp stun immunity seems like the clear winner.

I never even been in a significant EQ pvp fight, but from my understanding, as Ogre I wont get interrupted in pvp by melee EVER (spell stuns still interrupt ogre I believe?) ?? .. doesn't this mean when your 10%hp and casting a heal an Ogre has a better chance of getting the cast off, whereas a troll is susceptible to get interrupted, and face-plant. Im no min/maxer, but in the example I have given I think I prefer ogre over troll.

am I assuming this all correctly??

I think that last 'oh noez' cast getting off is more important than the extra 10hp per tick at 60. (well, on a pvp server I mean; if I was going blue server id be troll 100%.)

Also, im imagining that on a PVP server, you don't canni down to 20% like I used to do in classic.... so that extra regen is nice, but if your trying staying >65% hps 24/7 then who really cares?
