View Full Version : Need tips on gearing iksar sk with no outside help
So the main goal with this is just to have fun. Ideally I don't want handouts and I don't want to go out of my way to do something outside the spirit of the game to get gear. Ideally I want to just level with what's available on kunark, and just gear myself up and go at it for fun. So I'm looking to avoid any tricks to make plat and buy level 50 items for the time being.
With that being said, if you were to gear an iksar sk from scratch assuming there was no high level players in the game what items would you use? Atm I'm thinking curscail armor > banded armor, iksar targ shield and tarnished wep then try to do my sk quests for a better wep, then go for a fine steel wep or crafted iksar wep. Anyone have any suggestions on what's the best option for self gearing from scratch?

You could grab some burynai and reinforced rhino armor in kurns. It's not worth trying to smith the banded yourself really unless you have the money to burn. Also the burynai cutter and carrion queen spawns in field of bone you might want to look into.

Yeah, just about the best gear there is for free, that Rots all the time.

There are bandits in LOIO that drop ringmail. They're in a tower or something. Wiki it and farm them for good AC gear when you get into your 20s.

He would be getting rots not handouts. Why let something rot if you can use it? But hey if he wants to make the game harder on himself then who am i to argue. ;)

It's not about making it harder, basically I want to attempt to play the game the way it was intended. I want to avoid using any tricks that I wouldn't have if this was a fresh server. I feel if I geared myself from scratch and played through and attempted to tank as a non twink it would be pretty fun and give a nice sense of accomplishment.

Not having a good weapon is the biggest challenge IMO
Decent armor is not that hard

Really do agree with you, I think my best option that I can find is the sk weapon quests but I'm wondering if I'm missing some other simple options.

Rotting armor that most people dont want is not a trick and would have been also done on a fresh server. Just saying. I find it amusing how some people enjoy making things harder on themselves. To each their own though.

This may inspire me to abandon my plan to twink my warrior and just play him and gear him from scratch. We'll see. I really have NO idea what class I want to play. Tried cleric on red and love him. Tried an iksar warrior on blue and love him. Tried a de necro on blue, love him. Played a wiz at release for EQ live and loved him. Enchanter sounds fun! hah!

The iksar SK weapon quests are very time consuming, don't bother.
Edit. On second thought there isn't much better you could get than vendor bought weapons. You'd have to be 30 to loot a blackened iron Bastard sword lol.
I like to play this game of no twink/no trade/only looting stuff u soloed. But it's infinitely easier with a caster/priest. Is really fun because this servers economy is so old insanely powerful weapons only cost 100

Iksar Berserker Club (http://wiki.project1999.com/Iksar_Berserker_Club) is achievable by an on level non-twinked group. Not a min-max SK weapon for sure, but i feel like it fits in with the spirit of what you are trying to do.
The Skull of Torture (http://wiki.project1999.com/The_Skull_of_Torture) is also achievable by an on level non-twinked group, or even solo I would guess. Also not min max gear, but better than nothing and is fitting with your philosophy.

Good suggestions, thanks. I was also thinking iksar berserker club would be pretty solid if I could manage to get one

Tarnished swords that have loads of blades that drop from decaying skeletons are a good start (8/39) as they can 1 hit kill level 1 mobs.
After that an axe (about 3pp from vendors) then a claymore would be your next best weapons.
If you need a magic weapon but can't get hold of the IBC you have two easy options.
The Burynai Spider Fang from the spiderling caves (rubbish dps) or buying a combine weapon (I think the spear is the best ratio for the 1handers, but costs a lot... don't worry about the cost too much though as it costs like 64pp but you can re-vendor it for 57pp when you find something better. Think of it as a 7pp rental with 57pp refundable deposit :D).
Armourwise curscale/padded/bristlesilk to begin with then burynai hide / reinforced rhino hide from kurns should suffice.

For sure this, and just focus on grinding xp, grind grind grind. :)

Has anyone mentioned Dreadscale (http://wiki.project1999.com/Dreadscale_Armor) yet?
A lot of these pieces are pretty easy to get as early as the high teens, and it's pretty decent gear for an iksar.
Also I hope you know what you're getting yourself into rolling an untwinked knight with a 68% exp penalty. After the novelty wears off it's a bit like having grapefruits jammed in ur pooper. Trust me, I've done it before.

Oh also this Scourgetail Whip (http://wiki.project1999.com/Scourgetail_Whip) drops off a level ~15 scorpion in field of bone. It's not great but it procs right away.

Going through 54 as a dark elf SK at the moment. Bad enough at 40%, hats off to the lizards out there... if you can get 60 before they take out the hybrid penalty I think that's one of the highest accolades of this already hardcore leveling server :)

You, And I mean You as the OP have to decide that you are going to want to level, or spend tons of time making armor, doing quests, etc. etc.
You really can't do both. And both ways are a fun experience. But with a racial penalty, which you will have, even when Velious comes out, forever, it is one HELL of a Hard road to level 60.:eek:
But I have said a ton of times, this game is Suppose to be fun, not a race to the top. But contradicting myself racing to the top can be damn rewarding also. :p
This game is based around what YOU want to do not what Bob, Jerry, Mary, me does. It is your toon, not mine.
I have tried over the past 16 years, I have played EQ, to do what you are saying probably 30 times or more I am sure. In the long run I have gave it up every time. :( But YMMV.

Are you willing, for a fair price, to buy equipment that you wouldn't be able to loot? If so, then an Iksar might be the easiest race to play, simply given the absurd levels of plat you can make from the get go, in comparison to other races.
It's been awhile, but I remember hitting level 15 and going to East Commons with a little under 1k in plat.

been doing journal entries over the course of the years trying this myself however with 1 small change. When my Iksar SK dies, he is dead...and must be restarted. I have gotten as far as level 46 with no outside help, unclicked any random buffs etc etc.
I am trying to achieve the almost impossible, getting to 60 with 0 deaths and on my own accord. Using a FD class helps, but i think the racial/class xp penalty offsets this perk

More and more I think I'm going to make my Iksar Warrior my main. This thread has a lot to do with that. I'm not going to go as far as not accepting hand outs, but I am going to avoid looking for them. If a passer by hands me some plat, or some gear then I'd gladly accept. But I'm not going to go asking with the Ikky.
Although I do enjoy the necro quite a bit, so it's kind of a tricky situation. Wish I could play both at the same time, but I can't, it's against the rules. :( (which is fine, too, because boxing isn't my thing anyways lol)

She has a pretty damned good point about being on the forums, asking How to not be a Twink, and seeing how to do it!!
