View Full Version : Which fantasy monster is missing from EQ?

EQ covers lots of fantasy creatures, both from classical mythology (from Greece, Egypt, Norse etc) as well as made up DnD mythology.
But I found one specific monster type missing - Flying Skull!
These would have been awesome in packs! They could bite and spit fireballs :D
http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/doom/images/c/c8/Lost_Souls_MAP20.png/revision/latest?cb=20090622040632
Imagine a raid scenario where boss unleashes a dozen of them at the raid :D
What do you think, what could have made great addition?

Beholder?
Kika Maslyaka
05-13-2015, 01:08 PM
No, Beholders and Devourers are different - they are living monsters that well described in DnD mythology. (plus Beholder is mostly an EYE rather than a Skull)
Flying Skull would be Undead ;)
We have griffins (ons) (eenes) but no Hippogriffs

Not fantasy....
But we have Bottles of Milk everywhere. But 0 cows.
Most of the mobs listed have made an appearance at some point. Hydra is the one thing I don't recall coming in.
There were a lot of creatures that didn't become common enough though. Krakens, squids, mega-sharks and other sea creatures would've been a great addition to the game in Velious. Adding these mobs in between boats and maybe splitting Velious in half with an Ocean of Tears style zone with tons of underwater content would've been fantastic.
Only using the Coirnav model once and the kraken model two or three times was a bit sadface. Giant sea creatures that attacked vessels crossing to the hard part of Velious would've been really awesome.

actually TSR/WOTC trademarked shit load of creatures many of which now confusingly considered to be part of classical fantasy. I can't find the link atm, but there were a good 2 dozen of creatures on the list. - one I remember for sure are Illithids, which EQ stole over and renamed in their DoDH expansion.

Flying skulls exist in EQ2 lore, and a near-identical model exists in EQ1, I'm not sure what zone it's in but it was introduced post-Secrets of Faydwer.

More sea monsters woulda been cool in classic, but like mentioned above many of these creatures were added later on. Praklion of the Cauldron in Dagnor's for berserker epic and the Megalodon for shammy 1.5 or 2.0 in Lake Rathe. He's talked about by some npcs during classic era (I think?) but just wasn't there. Ettins are kinda neat, too.

No headless horseman doesn't count. It's not the same thing.

EQ is missing... Charcoal crunchers!
A present-day Tzotzil tale tells why weird creatures called Charcoal Crunchers no longer exist. A long time ago, a man was married to a charcoal crunching wife. Every night her head would leave her body and bounce over to the fireplace to eat hot charcoals. Occasionally the head would leave the house and thud around the neighborhood.
One night, the husband had enough and rubbed salt on her empty neck so that when she returned she could not stick her head to her body again. Annoyed, she bounced up on his shoulder and stuck there, causing him great discomfort. Some days later he convinced his wife to temporarily leave his shoulder so that he could climb a tree to fetch some pine nuts for her. Once up in the tree he refused to come down and she could not bounce high enough to reach him. Banging around the tree she accidentally crashed onto the shoulder of a passing deer and stuck there. The startled deer ran off and carried with it the last Charcoal Cruncher.
