View Full Version : Teamspeak/Voice chat - NOT CLASSIC, can we ban it?

See here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Speak was not even released until 2001 (Luclin days).
Lets get back to pure chat raids and grouping like we had in the good ol' days.
It shouldn't be that hard using the custom dll included with p99 to override the mic input channels to disable the player's microphone while playing EQ.

People didn't have high speed internet either! Throttle everyone to 56K speeds! Then throttle the CPU and memory to 1999 specs! Then force everyone to go buy a CRT monitor with max 640x480!

I hate the over use of Team Speak and Vent.
Usually just a bunch of verbal diarrhea and it causes people to not read guild/group chat and miss important information since they are waiting for an audio cue while tabbed out or watching TV.

Ours brains rewire based on the application/utilization of new technology. It's understandable that people rely on Vent/TS vastly more now a days than they did back then.
I would agree with Ele though. The crutch that is voice talk, cripples people's ability to type quickly, and pay attention to chat boxes. There are many people I know who don't read guild chat at all because they expect everything important in Vent/TS.
I learned to type fast largely due to EQ/Raid leading with no voice chat. One of the most impressive aspects of my guild on PC was our ability to down extremely complex events with no required voice chat program. We were just articulate enough to put across the important information that everyone needed to get the job done.
If Teamspeak and Ventrilo and Skype all died for a day, and Rogean did a repop. Oh lord Jesus would that be a sight to behold.

Speak for yourself, I was running at 1024 x 768 with DSL.
Then throttle the CPU and memory to 1999 specs!
EQ would probably run smoother then compared to the myriad issues it has with modern laptops. :D

Would it be RMT if I set up a conference call that charges everyone in it .50 a minute (funds going to me of course) and I require all my raiders to use it?

It's a double edged sword though because often important cues are relayed in vent and not so much in chat so if you aren't in vent/ts you're sitting there wondering what's going on staring at a dead chat box.

You mean being able to hear peoples tone? inflection in their voice? being able to communicate FASTER than typing everything out? The different sound of each person, some are surprises and some are scary as hell?Their laughter? Getting to know them in a different way than just typing out everything? That's such a horrible benefit. Yeah down with VOIP!!!
....
Just because there are morons in the world who let every single thought escape their mouths. Displaying their lack of social compass and ability to actually talk to another human being. Not able to control themselves, their volume or general idiocy...
Means VOIP is bad? Try moderating it, like a forum, band, mute kick, move to another channel... its not that hard.

What a great idea! I also like the idea of limiting people's PCs, but why stop at just system resources? Everyone should be required to have 1999 era peripherals (mouse, keyboard) also! There should also be ban hammers for anyone asking for non-classic features and whining about wanting instancing.

I agree with this poster that TS / Vent should be banned because not classic.
Also remove Batphone not classic! Go back to call lists of members and calling every person to tell them the raid target is up. The fastest dialer wins!
With the removal of those 3 things you could also get rid of the variance on any nonvariance mobs from classic. Then the variance mobs just have to be camped by raid forces for the entirety of the variance until spawn. The others would be timed and you could have raiders at the zone in or right outside the zone ready to race as soon as the clock hit 0hr! Maybe set up a P99 doomsday clock that due to spawn timers and politics in game could be changed...
Hmm think of the possiblities if we just rolled back technology!

Lets have a custom OS that has to be installed so that we can monitor what programs someone is using in the background, and then ban them for trying to load or install any other program.
Also people may be able to talk on the phone still so maybe we should have regional LAN parties where computers can have the P1999-OS installed, so we can monitor the usage of any type of voice chat between players. We will need people to monitor these LAN parties though because we don't want people to talk to each other, since that would be cheating. Maybe we can look into sensory deprivation tactics like they use in Gitmo so that no sound can be heard from outside of EQ. I think Sirken could then monitor these LAN centers by video and ban anyone found talking to eachother.

I do get the reluctance to use TS, there are a lot of times where I just don't feel like hearing it either. But it does allow for a more natural interaction and better development of a community. In most of the guilds I have been in, the people who don't hang out in the TS are usually kinda looked at as not "really" being part of the guild.
That being said I have been in some guilds TS that I would never go into again, but I have also joined guilds where the TS allowed me to feel like part of a community and improved my gaming experience tremendously. If you are in a guild where the TS makes your experience worse...then you just need a different guild or community lol.
TL;DR don't be scared of TS it can be fun

I will only say this:
on classic, my typing skills became so awesome I could have toured the country giving exhibitions.
I always liked that about back then. My guild did not use voice chat of any kind, and we would still get organized and give detailed instructions just via /tells and /gu or /shout if we had the zone to ourselves. And we got stuff done, just using dumb ol' typing lol.
Those days are gone, OP, but I agree with the sentiment. I laugh when I think about what the logs must have looked like during our raids. All the jokes, and the chatter, all the instructions etc., all just typed out.
It was fun :)

I've been in guilds that have used TS/Vent/Mumble where in the raid channel it was locked so that only a couple of people can talk (officers, raid leaders, pullers, etc...) and all you get to do is listen, and its worked out fine.
I've also been in a couple of guilds where their voice chats were the absolute wild west, and still had fun.
I'm fine with either, We used roger wilco back in the day, but my totally sweet 56k modem (and 33k cell phone modem in college) couldn't handle much. First couple of times tanking things of importance in Kael/Ntov the main puller called me on a landline.
It's just another tool in the toolbox.
