I want to start playing, but I'm totally unsure what direction to go in.
I guess my first question is:
How is grouping in p99? I'd like to play a warrior, but without a group I'll be pretty screwed.
Second question: Is this as old school as old school gets? Meaning, do casters have to meditate for an hour to get full mana?
Third question: Which classes solo best? If I remember correctly, druid was the go to for solo players.
Thanks!

Yeah, this is EQ in one of its most brutal and satisfying forms.
It seems to me the best classes for soloing are not in super high demand for group spots. For me, I'd prefer to struggle a little bit on the solo if it means I can land a group more easily.
The grouping scene is good. Most dungeons are actually a bit overcamped, which is better than dungeons being a ghost town.
Paladins are sweet because they don't have such a hard time landing a group as a tank and when I solo, I just top myself off with heals or courage, then get back to it. I have to med every now and then, but I find it's a good break to go do a chore or make a cup of coffee. If you happen to get a Clarity, you can solo grind without stopping (but to heal).
Good luck!
p.s. beware -40% exp bonus
Warriors are great for groups later on but have a bit of trouble earlier, especially if you're not geared out (most people have incredible twinks nowadays).
Groups are easy to come by if you look for them, or put them together yourself.
Like efridge said if you want to solo and tank a paladin is a good choice, just be ready to miss a lot :D.
Druid is a great first class to play - able to group, solo, farm and are able to make friends with their heals/buffs. After you get to a certain level and choose to go something different you have the ability to farm some gear for the new character.
One word of advice - this server isn't going anywhere. Take your time and do things the way you want to. Enjoy the game and the community.

Don't make a warrior first if you don't have any other source of income.

I beg to differ. You CAN make a very decent warrior as your first toon, TRUST ME it is possible! :P People LOVE warriors and you will likely be given decent starter weapons for free which takes the pain out of the first levels. I soloed/duoed my warrior and had accumulated about 2.5k plat by lv25 and was shopping around carefully and now have very decent gear for my level, although I'm not what is considered a twink on this server (no haste item or Cobalt gear).

Started playing last night... Level 2 Paladin. Spent a ton of time looking for the paladin guild in Kaladim and couldn't find it. Drove me nuts.
Going to really contemplate what I want to do today with my EQ character.
Got it down to Warrior, Druid, Shaman, Paladin or Wizard (I had a Wizzie from release until PoP when I stopped playing). I'm leaning heavily towards warrior. But from the experience on my paladin last night, it's rough sledding with no gear at all!

There are solo classes that are loved in groups. Shaman and Enchanter are power house soloers and groups love them. Also they are super cheap to gear. Spells are all that you need to worry about, and if you loot and vendor every VT item that problem pretty much goes away.

^ all of this. My first toon on the server is a shaman and I get group offers all the time but solo is so much fun I've only grouped once since I hit 30

My first toon was a warrior, I had no pre existing friends on the server. I really enjoyed gearing up from nothing and I recommend anyone doing it.
Personally I tried to loot/quest all my equipment I could, although I did pick up a couple of trade skill items on the way.

Use the p99 Wiki for the Kaladim maps to easily find the paladin guild, or any other locations in the future.
