So does Project1999 have the original unadjusted classes and hell levels every 5? I know the class/hybrid penalties are still in, but I remember long ago they readjusted the classes and I believe that was before Kunark or Velious. It was shortly after Sony took over I think. I also remember level 45 beign absolute hell twice. Will I be experiencing this again? I will prepare my booze cabinet if so.

30, 35, 40 and 45 are hell levels so the answer to your question is yes.

Next question. Is is Xanax that makes a person get glassy eyed and run on autopilot for hours on end? I may need to go talk to my doctor

Xanax is an anti anxiety medication...
You want meth for you 40 hour exp sessions.

Could you clarify this point for me.
Is it going from 29-30 that is the "hell level" part or is it 30-31 that is?

30 itself. So, 30-31 as you put it.

54 and 59 were also hell levels.
I was in a velks lab frenzy group for 40 hours on my iksar monk and went from late 58 (1 yellow to ding) to 60. it took that long. we had the full frenzy level and above of spidies, + whatever I could grab from below as well. very little downtime for the group (none for me as i was constantly looking for targets)
I think hell levels were removed (or distributed evenly amongst the other levels) at or after PoP so they'll be here to stay i imagine

The remember the explanation they gave. It was something in the code that caused all the exp to build up on every 5th level. Later on they got rid of that, but it still took the same overall exp, it was just distributed more evenly. My froglok wizard was the only char I ever had who didn't have to do hell levels. I just could not remember when that change happened, but now that you mention it I remember grinding those velks spiders too

velks actually had a zone xp penalty of -13% but there were so many targets to kill it was still some of the best xp around. as well has having some fairly common reasonable quality loot like the haste gloves

You just didn't have many options because everyone was at velks pulling spiders across the awesome ice slip n slide

Getting 60 in Velks is a favorite memory of mine. I remember being amazed at my Monk buddy pulling kobolds to the frenzy camp.

The problem I have with hell levels is the fact that the xp lost on death is based on your previous level. So at level 41 when I died I would lose a full yellow of XP, whereas if I died in level 40 I would lose a portion of a blue. Death at 42? Back to a normal loss. I wouldn't care so much about hell levels if this could be addressed. This was corrected when they normalized the xp gain and spread it across all of the levels.

Are you sure that's how it works? I don't recall it being like that at all but I could be wrong. I thought the amount of xp you lost when dying scaled up evenly as you levelled (as a fixed number, not a percentage of your level). So at level 41 you'd still lose more xp numerically than at 40. As my main is a ranger, I need to know these things.

I can assure you that this is how it works. I lost 40% of my level in 2 deaths at level 41. In no other levels aside from the ones directly after a hell level have I seen such severe losses.

I actually remember this from classic live.
Hell levels were bad, but so were the levels after them, simply because the death penalty after hell levels was insane.

Right when I got 52 on my main, they removed Hell Levels.
ShivanAngel

and it would have taken you the exact same amount of time to get 52 as it had before. They removed hell levels but spread the extra exp needed in them across levels 1-50.

Didn't know that. Good info, now I feel less robbed. hehe

I thought I read somewhere that you lose double the XP when you die in any level immediately following a hell level.

If memory serves, it was during the hell levels that the xp loss was huge. Basically because you needed so much xp to get through a hell level and a the death loss is calculated as a percentage of the total xp to get through the level.
i.e. if it takes one million xps to go from 30 to 31, and the death loss was 10%, you'd lose 100,000 xps if you died and were level 30.
Then once you hit 31, maybe the xp from 31 to 32 would be say 500,000 with the same death penalty, you'd lose only 50,000 xps

This I believe is true.
In hell you lose 1 blue when you die (which is equal to 2 blue from a regular level since hell level is double) then in the level after hell you lose 4 blues!
I always remember it being like this is classic and it is the same now.

Every level is a hell level for a Paladin.
You're doing it wrongly!
Every level is awesome as a dwarven paladin.

I think the first 10 levels are hell, if only to weed out the weak. Depends on your class though.
51-60 were all hell levels of increasing difficulty if I remember right.
ShivanAngel

all the levels before new spells are hell levels for casters also.
You cant increase in a mob difficulty tier because technically you are still a level 24, just because your toon is at 28 doesnt mean your power level is.
Course, for casters the level they get new spells plus the next 1 or 2 is amazing.

incorrect.
they all had a heavier xp burdon than the 1-50 levels... but there were 3 actual hell levels each alot worst the then previous
51. mini hell. took slightly longer than 52 to complete, but generally speaking most people didnt notice it as it was expected to be alot tougher than 50 due to it being added afetr an expansion
54 Medium Hell. This was a noticable increase in xp requirements
59 All seven levels of hell and a few more of hades. This was the hell level to end all hell levels. Some people (casual) spents weeks and even months in this level. as an iksar monk in a constant state of fighting in a velks frenzy group it took around 36 hours to complete this level (1 session). If the average person played 4 hours a day this would have taken about 2 weeks (if you factor in time to find a group etc)
they eventually evened out the xp progression from 1-50 and from 51-60 so hell levels became a thing of the past

yes and no, you will get less resists at the higher level, Not that it maters much on this server, i find myself landing many spells on red mobs that i could not on live.

I dunno, it always seemed to me that the level before the hell level wasn't too great either.

If you die in the level after a hell, you lose an excessive amount of XP, so, be careful!
