View Full Version : What class to play while working from home?

Hey guys! looking for some tips and pointers! everything would be greatly appreciated so let me hear it :). I work from home as a Telemarketer and I find my self super bored a lot of the time, I can do my job with 2 fingers. Ive been trying to find a class that would be good to play if I had to alt tab every other 30 seconds and alt tab back in another 3 seconds. Ive read on the wiki and really didn't find much in the guides and reading about the classes. I do have experience with classic so the difficulty of the class really doesn't matter as long as I can afk for small periods of time (30 seconds - 1 minute) a lot of people have told me to go Necro in this case and that's OK with me but this would be like my 4th Necro :p. but I want to look at my options before I make a choice. Ive always wanted to play a Wiz but I don't know how they are with soloing. but please guys let me know what you think! all feedback is greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't like to solo as a wizard, but in a group no one will even know if your afk :D
Otherwise I would go monk if not necro, FD seems like it would come in handy

Monk is a great solo class. Need to AFK quickly? Feign death.

I can't say much for a lot of classes, but I know this is very doable with jobs like magician. For example, go to a camp like the sister bandits in lfay. Kill them all in like 30s, afk till they repop.
What I do is send in pet and spam nuke every single one. Kill them all very fast, and have all your mana back in time for the next round.

I did exactly what you're looking to do - leveled my wizard all the way up by mostly soloing while I worked. In earlier levels you can just root and nuke, and then once you reach mid-levels you can start quad kiting.
Works well cause you can get some exp, then minimize EQ while you med.

actually wizard is good, just afk, look at mana bar, if its not full, afk more, come back, still not full? continue to afk..
basically be afk the entire time and you're playing a wizard both on a classic server, but in a very classic style.

I had a lot of fun soloing as an enchanter.
I only got to lvl 21, so maybe I would change my mind in later levels, but with spells like lull, root and mem blur, I found soloing pretty easy and a lot of fun.
I played a necro before, too, so the change from fear kiting was nice.

Solo leveled a wizard on red before the group XP bonus went in, had no gear really but that just means shorter med times ;) Didn't quad becuase I didn't have a good mana pool.
She made it to 51 and is probably the worst geared 50+ wizard on red. Just has an oracle robe and some +int jc'd stuff.
Totally doable solo, even as a first class...patience required but that goes for anything you solo :)

If you can alt-tab at free will then quading with wiz would work but if you are forced to tab out at any given time then a fd or pet class is your thing imo.

When I worked from home mage worked best.
- Break a blue-con fast repop camp.
- Stand in the camp AFK in aggro range.
- Repops owned by pet.
- Come back 7 hours later.
- Sweet, 2 levels done.

If you can be a dark elf, make a dark elf (or other race that can hide)... hide is handy for those afk moments (can check its "on" by conning a living mob that isn't usually indifferent to you)

I play at work and have been leveling a necro. I randomly have assholes coming up to my cube to ask me questions.
Thankfully I have dual monitors, and have my second monitor set up so people walking by my cube can't see it unless they walk into my cube. I then have my equipment set up where I have a KVM switch which toggles control between my work PC and my laptop (which is hidden under my desk) and my aforementioned monitor. That way my mouse+keyboard+second monitor are controlling my laptop, and hitting the button on the KVM changes my mouse+keyboard+second monitor to my work desktop.
So I play off an on all day at work, if anyone comes to talk to me in my cube I hit the mouse 4 button which is bound to feign death, and then under my desk my knee hits the button on my KVM switch which switches my second monitor to my work desktop. It's flawless and nobody is none the wiser. I do a lot of AFK camps to level.
Long story short, try a necro.

Is wiz good at soloing? and the thing is is that im on RED are they good with pvp?

You definitely want a peggy cloak, jboots and a see invis item as soon as you can get them. Wizards work best nuking from above if possible as they're quite vulnerable... work that Z axis ;)
Can't remember what I killed sub 25 but I do remember hitting up the sister isle in OOT, the bard in Feerrot, Highkeep guards, spectres etc. She's a dark elf, probably better in hindsight not to completely trash Freeport faction but it was profitable.
That's the thing about red, you want to make bank as you level a bit more than on blue to cover spell costs which come around a bit quicker - especially now.

If a mob aggros me during an AFK then that's the NPC's fault not mine. Other than that, not much devs can do to prevent an AFK unless they re-code the server to allow for AFK-tagged PC's to not become aggroable tbh. And I can't see Rogean banning AFKS.
Anyway, I dont even have a mage now and this was a very long time ago.

Interesting, so I could just FD my necro at a camp and let the pet kill all the pops and repops? I thought those kinds of practices (along with botting) were forbidden.

I don't think its forbidden, but I have heard of people frowning upon it, and sometimes going out of there way to kill an afk mage. Other than that, isn't afking like that part of classic? Also, why does the player have to get aggro, doesn't pets aggro here? Can't you just set your pet to guard in the middle of a camp and afk your guy in a more safe area?

As far as I knew, this isn't allowed. I've seen GM's come out and boot AFK mages lvling on good camps. But I would guess it only happens if someone comes along who wants the camp and finds the mage and then /petitions. If your on a camp that isn't popular then you can probably get away with it.

If you put as much effort into your job as you do trying to get away with playing EQ at your job I think you are way overdue for a promotion and a huge raise.

Ive played EQ for years at work. for the past few years I worked at a small hospital and ran the Emergency Room(3 bed ER). Most of the time is play my necro and FD when something crazy comes in(really sucks when I finally get a pop at a good camp though).
As for the afk leveling if you're FD then your pet wont agro so that doesnt work. There are ways around it but it gets shady and yes the GMs will bind you underwater or in a bad spot = death loop for doing that. I have been threatened.

You should probably not speak unless you know what you're talking about. You think any job is offshoreable? What about a nurse? A mechanic? Or in my case, IT support which requires hands on hardware support.
You just sound like someone who is jealous with a hangup on offshoring jobs. I do my job quickly and efficiently, which gives me downtime to play EQ. Keep working hard and maybe someday you can be as successful as me!

See my sig... that's what I did when I read your post.
PS - I definitely know what I'm talking about.... and hands on IT Support may not be something you can offshore, but it's something that will likely be downsized or they can contract n cheaper labor. Have fun with that.

In the UK's case we ship nurses in... regardless of our young people having less opportunities for careers than 10-20 years ago.
Onshoring? Insourcing? Last time I was in a hospital after a motorbike accident I had a nurse who could barely speak English... seemed nice, but couldn't chat to her lol

I have sigs disabled due to people having obnoxious shit.
And my job isn't going anywhere, despite what you may think. Every single job has free time, especially a support IT position. If you're working somewhere that has you running around all day that's your fault, not mine. Try working harder and smarter when you do have work, so you can play video games when you don't.
"Have fun with that" tell you one thing I have fun with, leveling while getting paid at work :D

necro/monk easiest for FD.
SK also. FD is one of the Safest ways to AFK other than camping, and even that is not safe if you come back up not knowing what mobs have re popped. :D
It has to be Necro, Monk, SK. Sure a Mage or Wizard can sort of Sneak into a crevice or something way up on a hill, but if you get trained you are a dead man. Where FD'ed you are safe no matter what.
You get into some kind of "Death Loop" and you are in big crap.
I vote monk; I have partial afk solo'd with both monk and mage quite a bit and monk is much safer. Monks are fantastic soloers until lvl 50ish and I usually got more random invites for groups as a monk. Both are fun tho, and necro also very solid choice
