View Full Version : Is it worth a shot?

Started playin EQ back in 2000-2001 but almost always played on a blue server. The one time I tried a PVP server was Rallos Zek I think. I just remember getting to around level 10 before I went back to my old server.
How crowded is the server? I realize of course that this is a PVP server but is it a fight for basically any decent xp spot while leveling?
If I decide to give it a shot I'll probably play a Shaman, it was my favorite class back in the day. Fairly easy to get groups or am I going to be soloing most of the time?
I'm bored as fuck with every other game out there right now besides maybe some Hearthstone every now and then. Basically the real question is - would this server be a decent fit for someone who's completely new to PVP and doesn't have 40+ hours a week to devote to the game?

It isn't very crowded. EQ servers back in the day had around 2k of all levels. This server has around 300 +/- of all levels. Finding groups isn't that bad, however you do have to deal with the occasional griefer in the PVE hotspots like Crushbone, MM, CoM. Best to make a group and go off the beaten path, the xp bonus makes it easy to level up anywhere there are appropriate mobs.
It is fairly easy to get groups, especially once you get past your teens. Before then it seems people only group in CB. As a shaman, I recommend you get a duo partner and you two make your own groups. You'll level insanely quick that way. Group bonus is huge, you'll get noticeably more with even just 1 more in group.

Go troll/ogre if shaman.... barb and iksar are a pain to travel back to for spells.
Might be able to find some groups around EC/Upper Guk but I leveled a shaman solo (before the XP bonus) in Innothule / Upper Guk - was good times.

I've always liked pvp servers. Played on TZ back in the day. The only thing I don't like coming to this server is being so late to the game..highest level toon is a 10 monk hehe. Sucks facing the world and other toons only with a bandit mask and 8pp ;)
But situational awareness, being prepared, and not whining when you get pk'd will go a long way to enjoying the server :)
(group xp is insane)

While leveling you have access to just about any experience spot in the game that you want. Getting a group of people willing to leave the popular zones is another story, but you will have the whole zone to yourself if you do.
The population is small, but there are enough people to not feel like a single player game.
Grouping can be hit or miss. Having a class that can solo is handy, or make another character for grouping at different levels.
you could always join empire if you just grind out the levels and aren't looking to pvp

umm...if you want to ask politely if you can camp a mob or wait in a line to camp one then GO Blue
If you want the excitement of hunting and being hunted....always looking over your back and one day pvping with mass amounts of people over a dragon GO red! Also faster XP on RED

Except you have to be lvl 50 to join them.

As a relative noob to red, I can tell you that my wife and I had almost no issues duo'ing and grouping into the low 50's. It becomes a bit more challenging as more of the population gets "in range" of you and you become a bit more of a target.
At that point, you'll want to join a guild or at least make friends in a guild to continue to easily progress. I'd recommend joining a guild so that they have your back and you have theirs.
Most of all, don't take getting killed too poorly, it is a PVP server after all and if you explode into a violent rage in server wide OOC, you'll be laughed off the server or worse yet, become even more of a target.
Good luck!

This is kinda what made me think of red over blue to be honest. I was hopping around the forums trying to get a feel for this server and saw a screenshot of something like 250 people sitting on a spawn on the blue server. The same post had a video of roughly the same thing happening on the red server but with corpses everywhere.

Better off on blue; red is dead. Only bottom of the barrel players on red for most part.

Level 5 so far. Seems like there's a lot more genuine hatred for each other than friendly rivalries, but I guess that come's with the territory. Really like the global OOC and the serverwide kill announcements tho. The exp bonus is nice too, seems a lot faster than the Everquest I remember.

That's the blue raid scene all over now, everyone just parks characters strategically and waits for something to happen while leveling/plat farming on their 4th/5th alt. If Trak is in window you'll see mages duck canceling Call of the Hero... that's what it's become and what is encouraged.
Red however, a brave new world... that authentic "day 1 naked" experience. Meet new people, group up, enjoy the journey.

Don't listen to this rmt scum. Red is where it's at. Blue is for morans who like to set rules on what date so and so can kill so and so mob, followed by mass petitions and a lot of butthurt. Come to red, spill blood and have a blast~

Community on red is much better
This server has much more life for being nearly 1/4th the population

I rolled on red to grind plat for my toons on blue (3:1 exchange rates), but now I'm enjoying red in itself - so far I haven't had a bad experience despite getting my arse kicked in all my PVP engagements :)

Wasn't there a bunch of butthurt about the "massive" pvp battle that happened recently? Especially by the same people who try to recruit for Red/support the cutthroat attitude?

Sure, but overall 200+ said how amazing it was and looking forward to more of it.
I'm not from blue, but it is my impression that 200+ poopsocking is common and everyone hates it.
Pick your poison.

PVP is a healthier server on project 1999. No doubts about it. It is significantly younger so has a little less toxic waste.
More population is cool, but blue 99 is even more top heavy than red. Once velious is ironed out, i hope we get a virgin server with 100% real to life progression, so by year 3 we are playing velious with way less time for people to massacre kunark and classic.
