Havent owned one for a long time.
Just relied on the soundchip that comes on the motherboard.
There any point in getting a fancy soundcard to play on p99?
I wont be setting up surround speakers in the pc room, or dont plan to atmo. WOuld that make a big differnce t eq?
AM more interested in the quality of the sound.
Probably have 30-44 quid to spend, is that just too low to hear any differnce?
DO have a hfi ampi can rig up but atmoi use senheisser headphones to play with.
SO whats other folks setup?>

A lot of people play with sound off. That is about how much you need a fancy sound card. EQ sound is nothing special.

The quality of the sound effects are very primitive, that its almost worse to have a good sound card. I quite often play internet radio or youtube as background music

You don't need a fancy card for them, but I like the sounds in eq. Music and spell sound effects are my favorite. I can't imagine playing without sound (especially when you need to hear mobs around you that are out of camera view).

If you're an alt tabber between pulls, its helpful to have the sound on so you know there's a mob in the camp... I'm guessing wizards/etc don't care though :p

there is a thread somewhere with instructions to install a plugin/codec that simulates old sound cards from 1999-era
your idea of buying a new card and expecting it to improve archaic .midi source files that the gaming industry hasn't used in 15 years is quite stupid
If your computer can currently play the game sounds you don't need to upgrade and can probably find something much better to spend your quid on.

Are those still a thing? I thought it was all 1984 over there with standardized euro currency to go with all those cameras and thought police. =D

I will say that if you have bass-y headphones, the Solusek/Lavastorm zone line music is satisfyingly boomy.

There have been a couple times when I've been idling at solb zone line in lava and that thunder scared the shit of me.

I can't imagine playing with sound off either. It wouldn't be the same game at all. I played a monk as my main and mob sound input was very helpful.
I mostly just meant that I doubt you need to buy a special sound card for EQ. I am no audiophile, though.

even back in the day a lot of folks played EQ with the sound off...I actually thought there was no sound in EQ for the first month that I played, because my friends had turned it all off by the time they called me up to hang out and "see the new game they were playing"---ah memories.
some of the music is actually pretty charming...and the old school sound effects have a real nostalgia to them. (I've always wondered why the loudest sound in EQ is opening and closing a bag. And the "hiccup" sound jumping makes is pretty identifiable to EQ) neither of these require (or would get any better) with a modern high end sound card.

I play with music off, and the thunder sound deleted from SoundAssets, but everything else is still there. I often rely on environment sounds for survival.

I must have had my music turned down for Velious, never heard it before - can imagine it starting to grate if looped :p

It's unfortunate that vent and EQ music refuse to play nicely together. You simply can't wait on char select for a call to long in and be rocking out to the EQ theme as a raider.

Just make sure you get a high speed HDMI cable so you can really appreciate the awesome velious armors. Here's a good one:

` setting up surround speakers in the pc room,`
is there a differnce in atmosphere having rear speakers when playing eq?
I used to play eq through this....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAD_3020
but moved to headphones, as I live in terrace and ddnt want loud sounds after midnight; sounds of orc grunts would scare the neighbours!
I made no mention of music quality in the OP. AM talking about the sounds during game play(which give atmosphere) eg mob noises and spell casting etc
anyone play this in surround sound?

With that budget you won't get a card that has decent shielding for inside the case.
An external DAC (digital audio converter) is cheaper and doesn't need all that shielding.
This one is affordable and sounds good http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009WN7QT4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Caveat is if you have shitty headphones or a gaming headset you won't be able to tell. (the tldr is if the brand is marketed a lot like razor, most of the budget is spend on marketing, looks, and bells and whistles not the actual speakers aka gaming headsets have subpar speakers)
and one of the best bang for your buck headphones

If you don't use a deskmic and need a boom
http://www.modmic.com/
Will make your good headphones into a headset and the mic sounds great.
People underestimate how much good sound can change games for the better.
