Fire pet till low 50s, then earth I think?
Get the torch focus item(it's a quest from Sol Ro temple), will give your fire pet more HP.
Get the Torch of Alna.
You can buy all the parts for ~300pp or less.
Go sell crushbone belts until you can afford it. It's such an upgrade. No single piece of gear you can buy is a bigger upgrade for a Mage from 1-49.

And when and if you group use the Air Pet. It stuns and does damage and disappears when it is not fighting, so it does not agro other mobs. Cool Beans.

Pets are a mage's tools and you always want the right tool for the job. Having all the focus items as soon as is possible is the way to go.
Solo 1-49, Fire pet hands down.
But like previous posters stated, every pet has their use. Earth pet if you need mobs rooted, Air if you need stuns, etc
What is the best pet for soloing? Earth. Hands down.
You aint high level or you wouldn't be asking this. You aint twinked or you wouldn't be asking this. Youre a new mage asking newb questions. Your best bet is definitely to cast your earth pet and use your nukes when you need to.
Unless youre on the red server and then, really, you should just group and use whatever pet you want.
EDIT: You will figure out what is best to use in what circumstance. If you can't learn that for yourself, no one can really help you.

Fire pet hands down does the MOST damage when you are using it as the Tank. In groups it does not get hit so it is the weakest.
But like has been stated, all have their uses or the Devs would not have designed them.
Above level 50 I find the Air pet is the best solo. For just farming low level items, plat etc. the Earth pet is the way to go. Have it guard you at a reasonable distance from you and you can go afk and really not have to worry about even getting hit so you can med if need be. I mean you can't go for hours lol, but safest pet to use.
Earth Pet is useful if there is more than one mob but it only keeps rooting the last mob it hit. You have to have it move back and have it attack other mob to engage it.
Water Pet Backstabs and has probably the fastest regen of them all. Good DPS, but I don't like them in a group because they Agro mobs. YMMV. And they do not BS solo, so I have not a lot of use for them.
I pretty much go Fire solo, Water group. But I do use all 4 at times, at least 3 of the 4 solo in a session solo, depends on the zone, mobs etc. I have all 4 Focus Items, a must I think, and I have the Burnt Wood Staff also. Can save you butt when out or low on mana. :D
I find that a Mage pet and the Burnt Wood Staff can kill a add in a group like KC as fast solo, or almost as fast as the rest of the group can the original mob. The two is a pretty scary combo DPS wise.

One would think...
Hah. =)
My real issue with pets is the epic pet and it's resists - simply baffling. Then again, I suppose the original game came with the disclaimer "This is a pve game and we don't care if pvp is balanced" so what am I really complaining about anyway?
Duel a lvl 9 snare class and have him snare/root your epic pet. Every time. *scratch head*

In most situations fire pet 1-49 will get the job done. 50-60 I tend to favor the air pet. Good dps, doesn't get hit as often and that stun procs often and has been the difference between life and death for me a lot of the time. Groups your going to be using water pet for the majority, but I would switch to air pet if dealing with a lot of casters. Before I got my epic I could kill more seafuries with a single air pet vs any other pet. Add a pair of stun whips and your golden.

I actually recommend using the Earth Pet as a tank due to its superior amount of hit points. Sure the fire pet has the best Damage Shield but if you have to micro manage fire pets that gets tedious and boring. I say cast a DS on a earth pet + burnout and nuke the mob it's tanking. Then if the mob breaks agro from ur pet run around (open area) till the pet roots it or regains agro. In a closed area your best option is probably to nuke it to death.
Make sure after every fight with your pet to make it sit! one of the golden rules as a mage.
Fire is best damage shield with a fire direct damage spell.
Eath is most HP and root chance.
Water in kiting situations with a cold direct damage spell.
Air for fighting casters mobs due to its stun chance.
Water Pet Backstabs and has probably the fastest regen of them all.Water pet doesnt get backstab until spell level 54 and 60. Also all the mage pets have the same regen rate (or the wiki is wrong)

Buff and nuke? If you aren't chain-petting, you're doing it wrong

May be my pro Air Pet propaganda but air pet is a monk. Gets hit less often, when it does get hit it generally gets hit for less. I'd take an air pet (with focus staff) over any other pet pre epic any day of the week.

Regen portion is actually correct, regen gets a huge boost from 6 hp/tick to 30 hp/tick but it never increases from there.
What's the general XP per mob for a blue con, soloed, from 40 or less?
Chaincasting is how much per mob?
Versus one pet and nuking/healing?
I ask because I have been toying with both options(level 33 right now), and either way I get about 1% per mob. Doesn't seem to change.
This is using a Fire pet(s) with the Torch of Alna.
I am starting to thinking chain casting is useless until later levels, unless you are doing yellow/red mobs.
I feel like the fire pet, most of its damage comes from the damage shield, and if you just throw one(largest available) nuke, you do more than 50% of the damage to the mob(DS damage + your nuke). Especially if you resummon until you have a max level pet.
Thoughts?

You are right in your thought about the resummoning of pets: Largely only used at higher levels. Something to think about, though: The highest level firepet doesn't come with that awesome dmg shield you are becoming used to at the lower levels. It, quite simply, is a wizard. Frankly speaking, I have been really hard pressed to find a use for it.

I've seen mage focus items mentioned several times, and I've read the wiki on them, but it seems like it would take awhile to amass the pp to buy them, or even longer to try and get the items yourself. Any tips on getting the focus items below level 15?

Nothing special, just the typical moneymaking schemes for lower level play. It's mostly in the selling of things to other players, (HQ bear skins, bone chips, spiderling silks, orc belts/scalps, etc.) On the plus side, pets start out very powerful relative to the mage and your opponents, so having foci is a nice thing to have but hardly necessary.

I was in Najena at level 16 killing the 2 mages up top. I got torch first, then people in zone (who didn't need the focus items) gave me a Broom and a Stein. I bought the shovel.
All the items can be found on random venders in EC/WC or somewhere in FP. OOT has stuff on venders too. So don't pay 100pp for ice giant toes. Go get them for 10pp off a vender.

Uummm... yes fire pet. When you solo you have to out Dmg your pet to get the expierence. My mage is lvl25 and the fire pet has a Dmg shield of 25! If the mob double attacks and kicks, that is 75 FREE dmg.
What do I mean by free damage? It is universal damage, which means it does not count as dmg done by the player or the pet. So when the mob is about half dead just one nuke will out damage all your pets Melle
If you use a different pet they will do more damage. It is harder to out damage them.
Fire pet super overpowered

Get 2 mobs on your fire pet and watch it drop like a fly or you scrabbling to save it's life with your heal spell (Waste of mana).
Best pet to solo with at lower levels like 25 is Water. Throw a DS on it, send it in, when the mob is around 80%, cast 2 DDs (most powerful you have). Sit back down and let the pet/DS do the rest. BAM! Full xp.
While you are medding, have your pet sit, around the same time you get 100% mana, your pet will already be full health.
Much better than taking a risk with a low health fire pet that doesn't really turn in to a dps pet until 29 (top level pet summoned at 29).
It's just an opinion. I've had this argument several times.

Personal example for you all:
I'm level 37 right now. I roll with my Earth pet and usually summon over and over until I get the top level pet.
- In FV I pull a mob (pirate or drovarg) with a level one fire blast.
- My pet already has weapons, DS (15 dmg current) and BO2.
- Sick pet.
- Mob hits 80%, I cast 2 cinder bolts.
- I sit down and watch the pet/DS do the rest of the dmg. (I am around 80% mana)
- Sometimes the pet takes 10% dmg, sometimes 30%, either way have it sit as soon as the XP message pops up and when I am FM the pet is Full Health.
Fire pet DS is amazing, but the pet takes A LOT more dmg compared to Water or Earth and I find that my pulling is not fluid at all. I am spending more mana sometimes to make sure the pet stays alive (even with 1 mob). ***Fire pet DS is 30dmg, my casted DS is 15***
I have ALL focus items and use them when summoning my pets.
Theoretically the level 34 Earth pet has 1380 HP and Fire has 690 (with focus item). When a mob is smashing your pet for 70+ dmg a hit and double attacking you'll notice a difference.
And lastly, remember, a Mage is nothing without it's pet. NO CC, NO ROOT.....you better have Jboots or SoW.
