View Full Version : Game closes immediately after server selection

I was able to launch the game and play one time about a week ago, and now when I came back to play again I have this frustrating problem.
After logging in and everything properly I get to the server selection screen and choose the server I wish to play on and then suddenly the game just closes. No crash, no error, no nothing.
I have spent approximately 8 hours trying to troubleshoot this issue to no avail, and I am at wit's end. The only thing I've seen remotely close to this issue is a window resolution problem, but I have tried many different resolutions and windowed mode and there is no change whatsoever. I have completely deleted all of the files and re-extracted them 3 or so times, one of which was the files of a friend who is able to play as I write this.
If anyone could help me out on this, I'd really appreciate it.

This just recently started happening to me as well..
Got a new monitor 2560x1440 native resolution I've tried numerous things, but I keep crashing to desktop after I select a server. Anyone else running this resolution have their eqclient settings handy?

once in awhile I get "an unknown error occurred while trying to join the server" messege.. then when I attempt to connect again it absolutely boots me back to desktop.

same issue, I get to server select pick the blue99 server and it kicks me back to log in screen.
I'm getting the same thing here, after it boots me back to the login credentials screen (after I have tried to join the blue server), I try to log in again and it says:
Error 1017: Cannot login to the Everquest server.
You may need to re-run the Update Patch.
Repeatedly seeing this message indicates a loss of connectivity to the patch server. This is usually temporary.
I actually just did a fresh install as well, and I'm still getting this issue.

(my issue kicks me to desktop not login screen)
have you tried getting into the eqconfig and changing the resolution to something basic like 800x600? I know oddball resolutions cause a lot of people a lot of grief..

Can you give me the exact filename? I have no eqconfig file :(. I have 1 config file which literally has nothing in it, and I have one .cfg file eqfecfg which only has Language {1}.
Maybe I'm missing files?
*edit* I assume they are .ini files, which one specifically has the default resolutions set?

Are you by chance running teamviewer? Close it out, including the system tray icon, and try it again. It is a known issue with wineq2 and teamviewer. I had the same thing happen, and had to hunt around for a solution.

The file is eqclient.ini in the root of your EQ folder. These settings will set your window to 800x600 windowed - once in the game you can use the video settings to futz around with different resolutions...
[Defaults]
WindowedMode=TRUE
[VideoMode]
Width=800
Height=600
WidthWindowed=800
HeightWindowed=600
WindowedWidth=800
WindowedHeight=600
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
FullscreenRefreshRate=0

Exact same thing is happening to me. I used to be able to log on just fine, then this morning I get disconnected from game while zoning. (Which is not uncommon) But this time, when I go to log back in, I get to the server selection screen and can't go any further. When I click my server, and press Play it freezes there for a couple minutes before booting me back to the Login page.
And just before I posted this I tried the last suggestion of changing the resolution in the game files but unfortunately that did not fix the issue.
/BUMP the hell out of this please!

No it's not, you're describing a totally different problem. Sounds like your network latency is extremely high - I had the same problem and symptoms and raised hell with my ISP til they fixed it.
The other folks appear to be having problems with video resolution, which has nothing to do with your issues.

I did this, no change :(.
Anyone else have any thoughts?
Rogean?
Actually probably a side note as well...about the same time this started happening, project1999.org is no longer redirecting me to the site...I doubt both things are connected...but possibly? I use the patcher Rogean posts so I'd assume it should be fine but...maybe a setting from a long time ago I need to change?
Another thing is I actually have EQ live installed, could the files be overwriting each other possibly? I recopied my titanium folder which should be usable but the same issue is happening...which makes me think either live is overriding my p99 files, or something of the sort?

sidenote: whilst changing nothing, 1 in about 20 attempts works for logging in at server select.. the rest are usually booted immediately to desktop.

I'm having the same issue... it sucks.
I also tried running it from eqgame.exe using the instructions from:
https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94928
No changes :(.

Chiming in to say I am also having this problem and making the eqclient.ini changes Magellan suggested did not solve the issue
Figured it out (thanks to a lot of help from the EQ live boards) I was having an odd time with my live install as well.
It's an AMD issue, quote:
It is not the necessarily 4.2ghz for AMD, it is the HT Frequency/FSB being higher than 200mhz. With Intel it runs find at 4.6ghz but then only the CPU multiplier is changed, whereas AMD uses both HT Frequency + CPU multiplier.
My FSB was set to 216, i underclocked (I think? I know absolutely nothing of OCing) it to 200 and I was able to get past the server selection screen. I crashed after it started to load but...progress...maybe underclocking it is causing ram issues?
One step at a time...
This is an issue with EQ's basic code, not the server or p99.
Unfortunately now when it's loading I get an error:
The instruction at 0x034932f0 referenced emory at 0x802ad4f7. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Maybe I broke it as well as fixed it? I assume this is a ram issue...and I'm thinking I underclocked my ram in the previous step?

Do you guys all use the same ISP possibly?
Do you guys all use the same ISP possibly?
I doubt it unless they all live on the same college campus as I do :D

I'm getting this same issue on my girlfriend's laptop. Game get's to the server select and then just closes with no error and nothing of note in the log file. I already set the eqclient.ini to 800x600 mode.

Is it an AMD CPU?

I'm not sure if this will fix the issue for anyone else, but for me, I have to close AMD Gaming Evolved (from the system tray) which was installed with my new Radeon video card drivers before I run EQ or it closes right after the server selection. I'm not sure what the interaction is, but it fixes this issue for me. I hope this helps someone.

I had the same problem. Fresh install but clicking on a server booted me to desktop.
Followed mgellan's advice and boom it worked. Thanks!

I did not have the AMD gaming Evolved running when I tried to login and had the issues last night, but I did end process or two AMD catalyst control center processes and then logging in worked fine. So it does appear to be related to AMD video driver/control center/other AMD video software.

My game does the same thing. the only thing i can do about it is put the resolution at its lowest, then i have massive black bars on the side of my screen and no space to see my character.
