Ive never played vanilla, I started playing wow a little bit before Cata releases.
When people talk about wow vanilla, i read stuff like hard grinding, classes who cant soloing like priest, taking months to get max level, people must make groups by themselves, not by auto-group-finder, only a few neckbeards had epix or "purples"... so it sounds very closely to everquest classic.
I just ask it because im thinking of starting a toon in Nostalius Wow private server but only if it is like EQ with few differences.

Vanilla WoW is definitely more akin to old style EQ than the abomination it has turned into with the last few expansions. I played a little on Nost when it first released, and it's a solid server with a HUGE population. My only problem is the population might actually be too big because questing is a total bitch with that amount of people competing.
Oh and it's community is insanely toxic compared to P99 so be warned.

Can't really compare the two. Even in vanilla era WoW has so much more class balance than eq. The word "grind" really is thrown out far too loosely with regard to vanilla WoW. There are almost always plenty of quests to get you through a level even playing solo. No XP penalties for class/race. No XP penalty on death. And no actual corpse runs. Not that vanilla WoW isn't fun. It is. Its just different from classic EQ.

in wow vanilla you still didn't need to rely on others for anything at all, so no. it was still a kiddys pool even on launch

Same can be said for EQ now that we know the game inside and out.
Not saying vanilla WoW is hard at all though.

Vanilla WoW is tedious. No streamlining of quests. Lots of foot travel.
So yeah kinda like EQ.
Vanilla WoW was actually a lot of fun. Having to find a group on your own realm was amazing, the auto group shit took the fun out of it
Vanilla WoW is a term that spans a much larger timeline than classic EQ.
MC era WoW is very different from BWL era which is very different from AQ era which is very different from Naxx era which is very different from pre-TBC era (basically Naxx with TBC talents).
Classic EQ is pretty much divided into Original EQ w/ legacy stuff, Solro Temple EQ, and Planar EQ. Planes make for a very different game at the top end, but not much changes elsewhere.
Anyhow, all eras of WoW were really enjoyable imo.

What i always disliked in wow (i played it when it was new) is the non existant death penalty. That just causes reckless behaviour and no respect for the world.
Other than that, it was quite fun. Can't say anything about the newer incarnations, but i guess they went the EQ way and totally destroyed everything that made people actually need each other.
