Just would like to bring some attention and awareness about this classic ability that would allow a magician to specialize in conjuration. You would reclaim your pet and get more mana back than it would take to cast the pet. You would do this over and over again to get full mana. This is how magicians were able to keep up with other classes back in classic. Not exactly sure why magician pets here only give mana back based on the % health they have, dont think that was classic.
Opinions? Comments? Would like to hear everyone who actually played a magician chime in on this maybe make the server a better place for a class that is very underplayed.
Thanks

Well I have done that one here, or tried, not much luck. But that would take a huge amount of Reagent: Malachites to carry. But with the Focus item for each pet does not take any mana for Reclaim Energy. Plus the loss of buffing, pet toys, outweighs the benefits I think at least on here. Mainly because you never know what level pet you will get in the end.
The XP penalty really sucks for a Mage and still does to this day. I rarely play mine and when I do it is mostly in a group. I have no clue if the penalty is ever lifted, even in Velious?? Nilbog threw them under the bus for sure. :(

This was more a Luclin/PoP thing.
The tactic/exploit involved using three things:
1. Improved Reclaim Energy AA - Increased the amount of mana returned on reclaiming
2. Elemental Pact AA - Malachites were no longer consumed when summoning pets
3. Pet Focii items - Pet Health is increased by some percentage
Basically Reclaim would give you Mana Cost * Pet's Health Percentage. Improved Reclaim Energy improved the amount by a bit. Let's say 10%
So a pet costs 400 to summon. At 100% life, a mage wouldve received 440 Mana back when reclaiming the pet with Improved Reclaim Energy. With focus effects increasing the pets health from its base 3000, to 3300, the game then considers this as you reclaiming the pet at 110% health. So you would reclaim him for 480 mana (40 from Improved Reclaim AA and 40 from the pet focus increasing pet HP above the base)
With Specializes Conjuration of 200, a player will save about 10% off the mana cost. So a 400 mana spell costs 360 to cast.
In the end:
Cast pet -360 Mana
Reclaim pet +480 Mana
With Spell Casting Mastery reducing spell costs another 10%, and Mana Preservation focuses, Mages were able to pull in 150-200 mana per cast/reclaim. This was nerfed in GoD era and they were given an actual pet cannibalize spell which wasn't anywhere near as efficient.
In summary. It is somewhat doable on this server but extremely inefficient because you:
1. Need tons of Malachites
2. You don't have Improved Reclaim Energy
3. You don't have Spell Casting Mastery or Mana preservation focus items
You will end up fizzling and losing all the mana you gain I think here, but I haven't tested it.

Bingo.
Here you get a percentage based on your pet's health. If your pet is at full health, you will get back whatever the cost of the pet is. If it's at 50%, you get 50% of the cast cost, 25% health you get 25%.
For the epic pet, you get 1 mana for a reclaim, or in other words, it doesn't really work. I honestly cannot remember how it worked on live with reclaim for the epic.
I was the 4th mage on FV with the mage epic and it was so long ago that I just don't remember whether or not I got the mana back on a reclaim or not. I want to believe it did, but maybe I didn't. They changed the way the epic worked on live after the introduction of augments. Rather than summoning the wand, you changed the wand into a no drop item (same stats, no clicky) with an augment spot and the spell became a normal spell just like the water/fire/air/earth pets.

Nah the spell still summons a wand with the clicky. You can just keep a no drop version with no Clicky + with augment slot for stats. Then summon the orb for clicks you need it.

You might be right, i'd have to log into live and check :)
Been way too long, probably near the back of my spell book though. They should have scaled the epic pet up with future expansions, or rather at least until OOW, when the epic changed.

This was not a PLANES OF POWER thing. Planes of power brought the AA because that was when they nerfed the ability and they thought they could bring it back with the AA but the AA actually did nothing. As a magician leveling up on this server I carried backpacks full of malachite because I would always summon and re summon until I would get a max level pet. Magicians pets are expendable thats why this worked. Its a pet its not a player so you can reclaim him just as so. I have played a magician on a PVP server from 2000 on and this is something I used religiously. Anytime I was low on mana I would reclaim my pet then summon another pet and reclaim the pet again. Whats the point in a magician specializing in conjuration for if we cant do this? The ability its self to specialize says to lower the mana cost on spells. I'm gonna bust out some of my old Everquest strategy guides and prove that this was in fact true. I played a magician at lvl 52 also so I didn't ever get those aa's. Daldaen you are 100% wrong and obviously know nothing about this ability. I appreciate the comments though.

Thats usually all it takes to set things right around here. I think Daldaen just explained what he knows about the mechanics. no need to bash him just prove him otherwise.
