Is EoT worth the price?

Is Emissary of Thule worth its price?

According to the wiki, EoT is higher level, has more hp and does more damage, but i'm wondering if it's really worth spending all that money for it.

I don't think 60 necros use EoT much outside of a corner case you need a tank pet.

It only does more damage on base hits. It bashes or kicks every 8 seconds for a measly amount of damage, like most Warrior pets, whereas the rogue backstabs for ~130-140. This is where the rogue pet makes up for the small damage lost in auto attacks.

Probably not terribly worth it. It is really just for tanking, or fighting mobs that do some form of major AoE effect that the pet needs HP to soak, however briefly.

If you don't like charming I would say it's worth it. Keeping EoT up with shadowbond/dispell when tanking is far far easier than anything else.

Sesserdrix - The rogue pet is 43, EoT is 47 (assuming best level). Does the level difference in of itself make a difference when attacking higher level mobs? ie- will the EoT have more chance to hit due to it's superior level? If so wouldn't that negate the extra dmg from pet BS?

EoT is expensive but worth it. There won't always be an undead mob around for you to charm and he's very "tough" as far as summoned pets are concerned.

EoT is especially good against caster mobs. He bashes often and knocks out many spells. If you spend any extended period of time somewhere like most of Seb where almost every mob is a caster you'll notice it very quickly.

The Necros I have played with use it often. It doesn't make much sense to me to lvl a Necro and not get the spell.

Its too weak to tank anything outside green cons at the level its attained.

Straight up tanking a few seafuries will get it killed, so even greens can overwhelm it pretty easily. One dar ghoul knight in guk will get close to killing it also at times.

Obviously you won't be using it to tank much, and since its less dps then the 53 pet, there is really not much reason to get it.

Just wait until you can get it in a group or for cheap. Better things to invest in for sure.

I use this thing constantly and pay close attention to what it is capable of, since it is the favorite aspect of the class for me (a fucking grim reaper/spectre pet, come on).

It doubles (and triples in the primary hand) automatically, hits for 61 max, procs a 75 damage lifetap often, and the wiki listing for it's HP seems pretty accurate. It bashes but does not kick as far as I've noticed, which is fine since mobs either bash OR kick I believe and bash has the benefit of interrupting casters (whether or not kick does much more damage I don't know).

A bit into Velious it should be immune to fear.

Can you get by without it? Absolutely
Will the 53 rogue pet out dps it? Possibly, if you can always position the mob so that the rogue will be backstabbing, but even then I wouldn't think the rogue wins out by much in dps.
Is it worth the cash? I for one think it absolutely is, it's a necro status symbol and is very useful though nothing amazing.

Was solo'ing in the hole this week and it held it's own against blue cons at lvl 59 (hasted with augment death), just as an addition.

It's best to not think of it as some kind of necro version of the mage epic, it's a great dps tool that has far more hit points than you ever will. Keep it hasted, use shadowbond as necessary and it will put out a very nice flow of dps and occasional spell interrupts for you, as well as tank a couple thousand points of damage as necessary.

For making plat, no it's not worth it. For convenience it absolutely is. Tanks don't need to be messing with positioning for pet dps and when you're solo you want something that can take the hits. This is the guy.

I've never done any official parsing on it, so no, do not take it as a fact on my name alone. What I did was to have a friend sit spam while my pets attacked, and I checked out their max potential damage. This cut out any chance of misses (so the level difference), and any chance of the pet *not* backstabbing.

The damage increase seemed better to me, so I have used it since, happily.

Going through my logs and just picking out keywords, lets see! I have time, why not?

So I logged in and decided to maim some freeport guards. My earlier log-digging adventure didn't satisfy me in terms of the rigor it provided, so I felt the only way to be sure there was no outside interference on my pet was to do tests anew. So here's what I did: I started in the dirt arena area in East Freeport, and I killed 3 guards, and then killed them again with the other pet. Lets see what we can determine!

First thing I'd make sure if clear is that we shouldn't try to determine average hit chance from these logs. They are far too short. So EoT vs Rogue pet on the basis of chance to miss is something that would need more or a test than this. What we will look for here is rate of attacks, max hits, etc., and get an idea of damage prior to miss chance.

Analysis:

One thing that should stand out from the logs is that it took longer for the Rogue pet to kill the third guard rather than the EoT on the third guard, but longer for the EoT to kill the first guard. This is because the Rogue pet is more on level with the 3rd guard, meaning the Rogue pet was getting equal level misses. The EoT, as a higher level, was not. However, what this doesn't tell us is what the EoT's numbers would have appeared if both the EoT and the Rogue pet were going against something of a higher level than themselves. I do not think we can assume the number of misses to be linear, so we can't really use this to say that against all high level targets, the EoT is superior.

What we can say is relatively safely is that when the target is equal to the level of the Rogue pet, the EoT will do better. When the mob is lower level than both pets, the Rogue will do better.

If we think in the hypothetical, and compare absolute top scenarios, the real question here is backstab vs bash/kick. Backstab has a 12 second CD, while kick/bash has an 8 second CD. The common denominator here would be 24. In 24 seconds, there are 2 backstabs of 2(171) damage for a total of 342 damage, and there are 3 bashes/kicks of 3(26) damage for a total of 78 damage. This means in 24 seconds, the Rogue pet does 264 more damage from specials.

So how many attacks exist in a 24 second period for the pets?

Now, RNG is for sure going to play a part, so lets say 28 attacks in 24 seconds on average. Since the max hit of the EoT (61) and the Rogue (56) are 5 apart, we can say that for each of those 28 attacks, the EoT is doing 5 more damage. In other words, the EoT does 140 more damage from regular attacks in a 24 second period.

If we think back to earlier, in a 24 second window, the Rogue pet does 264 more damage from specials. This means that the Rogue pet does (264-140) more damage than the EoT in a 24 second window, or +124 damage in a 24 second window, or 5.16bar more DPS.

However, we should remember this is *optimal* damage. This is assuming full hits, and no misses. So we can't do much to extend this to higher level mobs. As we could see earlier, a mob more on the level of the Rogue pet caused it to miss a great deal. So without testing this on a mob that is higher level, or on the same level as the EoT, we can't make any valuable predictions there.

But in the end, the DPS gain for the Rogue pet is rather minor, when considering it against trivial level mobs.

There is one other major factor, and that is lifetap procs. None of these fights were sufficiently long enough to get a really good reading on the procs per minute of the lifetap ability, so we can't determine all that much. When I was doing the testing with the EoT, there were situations when I was seeing unusual behavior which may account for the higher procs for him over the rogue. But what we know for sure is that they can BOTH proc lifetaps, but the Emissary lifetap is 75, as opposed to the rogue's 45.

That'd be 30 more damage. Since my data here can't really do a great job of saying how many procs per minute there should be (we need more extended, clean tests for that), instead lets consider how many procs there would need to be for the EoT to overtake the Rogue, assuming they proc equally (and to what I know, I've not heard that the warrior is supposed to proc more than the rogue).

The Rogue did 124 more damage assuming max hits (so potential damage?) in a 24 second window, which means that the EoT would have to proc 4 times to break just shy of even as 4(30)=120, which would leave the rogue at +4 damage in a 24 second window, or there would need to be extended data collection that can tell us if it is true that the EoT procs more often than the Rogue pet.

So is it worth it? Well, to say for absolutely sure, we need to test EoT and Rogue pet on a high level mob, something in the level 50 range ideally so it will be above both the EoT and the Rogue.

Up to you. Personally, I use EoT anytime I am farming trivial content, when I want a tank, or when I throw something at a dragon that AEs. Other than that, I use a rogue pet, as I will often try to focus on positioning while doing my other jobs.

What is funny is everyone loved the Monk pet and says the Rogue pet doesn't do dick for damage because its summon level is too low and misses too often. That's how I remembered it. Lots of love for the monk pet.

Very interesting thanks for doing that Uteunayr. Unfortunately, as you admit, it doesn't cover how the differing level of pets fair against higher level mobs, which is the answer I personally was seeking. Maybe if I get some time I'll have a go at that myself.
