View Full Version : Starting From Scratch

Hi Everyone,
I know I've seen a few forums on this in the past, but not for quite a while. I'm interested in finding a handful of people who want to start over completely from scratch. No twinking. But even further than that, no accepting high level buffs (thanking people and then clicking them away if people just randomly give them), no accepting gifts from people (if they insist, just putting them in the bank and not using them) etc. I thought it would be fun to find 3 or 4 people who would like to build a pretty self sufficient group (tank, healer, 2 dps) or something like that. Play times would be roughly 8pm to 11pm PST maybe three or four evenings a week. I would be willing to play any class needed, except wizard because I already have a high level wizard on the server.
It just sounds like fun to be excited at every cracked staff that drops, pooling resources to help afford the most important spells that will benefit the whole group. Going and trying to camp low end items that will benefit the team, like a shield from the spider in upper guk or orc trainer in crushbone for the tank and cleric, or camping the scryer for a bracer of woven grass for the casters. Everyone helping each other to finish sol ro class quests.
Maybe I'm crazy and this just sounds awful :)
Ideally I wish a new server would be opened. Everything is just so top heavy at this point. Few people play the game "for reals" anymore. It's just people being power leveled or heavily twinked rushing through the game to sit in lines for months for raiding.
If anyone has any interest at all in possibly setting something up, just post here at your leisure. Thanks!

It is a cool concept, and fun. I am actually doing that very thing with a group of RL friends. Hopefully you can find a group willing to do it.

If you are truly interested in doing something like this I would be interested in playing the tank, to that end, because we would be lacking in gear, one of the Knight classes would be most interesting due to the utility that comes with them and their ability to out aggro a warrior until later levels (which are sure to come slow).
If we were able to to do this on a schedule I would be particularly interested. I still however, would enjoy playing my main and raiding when I need to, but I find that grouping with a specific group of people from time to time would be a rewarding experience, especially when doing it in the way you propose.
I would be interested in doing this I will be happy to talk to you about scheduling and classes, I would be up to do this with anywhere from 2-6 people.

We do this on Red 6-9 CST Tues, Thurs, Sunday. We're on group 2 which is at level 25-27 now after about 8 session. Come stop by the reddit sub group if it sounds like something you're in to. We need 2 more ppl to get the full 290% exp

Have you considered simply passing on unwanted donations to other young adventurers? Seems a better idea than leaving those items to rot in your bank for eternity.

Hi guys,
Thanks for responding. So far it sounds like there are two people that are interested in possibly setting something up. Ketu wants to play a paladin or shadowknight and Zheta is probably most interested in playing a cleric. I think I'll most likely go rogue if those are the two classes you guys want to play. It would be really great if we could find at least one more person who wants to do this, playing as maybe an enchanter or shaman, although really anything would probably be okay.
As far as passing loot to other new players that is given to use; absolutely! I agree this is better than it just sitting in a bank.
The other thing I don't think I mentioned in the post was, I'm not sure how I want to handle buying and selling items. As it stands, the economy on this server is so wonky that you can just get a few HQ bear belts, some stacks of bone chips and buy something like a Wraith Bone Hammer that is better than the best weapons that were available in original EQ. This goes against the spirit of trying this "no twink" group, although it isn't strictly twinking. How would you guys want to handle this? I'm almost tempted to say 'no transactions with other players'... but this is pretty harsh. Maybe, no Kunark drops can be bought from other players? I don't know. I'd be curious to hear what you guys think.
Again, I'd planned on this being 8pm to 11pm PST maybe three or 4 evenings a week. Does this play time work for you guys? This is pretty much my only option for playtime, so I hope so!
Post at your leisure,

So this sounds pretty cool to me. However I started my enchanter just two weeks ago and I'm not sure I'm ready to reroll him already. What would you think of me joining up when you get up to lvl 12 or so (I'm lvl 14 at the moment).
Also I've run the stein of moggok quest several times at this point so I have around 800pp left. I've been using the money to tradeskill because that is one of the things I loved about early eq.
Anyhow let me know what you think, I am also available most nights 8-10pm PST so the times seem pretty good.

I would much more be on the 2-3 times a week schedule as I do not want to abandon my main altogether, I enjoy raiding and playing him. I think there is something to be said for attempting to play the same race for ease of access to cities and for eventual crafting needs.
To that end I recommend Neriak and Dark Elves, so far all of the classes mentioned except the shaman can be found there. I think the idea of a necro or an enchanter would go along ways towards helping this group.
Or there is the choice of going with all Elves, High Elves and Wood Elves starting in the same area with the phenomenal crushbone just next door!
Or play whatever the hell you want, these are just recommendations.
As for time availability in the afternoons we all realize that on occasion RL stuff does come up, the group would have to be flexible to occasionally accommodate that from all members.
That being said, I am still completely down for this.
For myself, the best potential nights to play would be on a monday, wednesday, saturday, sunday. I certainly won't be able to do four nights a week, but 2 or 3 of those would be great.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday (or two of those 3) sounds good to me. Wednesday doesn't work as well for me unfortunately, but those 3 are fine. It's a shame they're all back to back, but no big deal. Is 8pm to 11pm PST too late for you? Sorry, Pacific time is so hard to link up with East coast people.
I'm going to play a human rogue, so I can start in Freeport, which is right near neriak/nektulos anyway. I think the best thing is for us to independently reach level 5, because grouping before then is kind of pointless. I will be online tonight (Saturday the 14th) around 8:00 or 8:30 PM Pacific time if you want to send me a tell to hammer out the details. I will be on my character Sanguine. Hope to hear from anyone who is interested!

I am actually going to have to drop from this idea suddenly, I apologize. I didn't realize you were pacific time, that will be difficult for me to manage and I have much to do generally in the afternoons before I can play.
I was looking forward to it, but it will be quite impossible.

Sorry to hear that Ketu, but no big deal. Do you live in Alaska or Hawaii or something? Usually people can't link up with PST players because they're east coast and it's too late... sounds like it would be too early for you. But no worries. Sorry Zheta, looks like we'll have to scrap the idea... there just hasn't been enough interest in it. Thanks to both of you for your posts. Enjoy your day.

I don't know that I would join said group but I wish you luck! I myself am excited to get into vanilla EQ with a similar approach. I owned a copy of the original back when I was 15 or so but never got to experience it in it's full glory as i couldn't convince my parents to pay subscriptions (too many fights between me and my 3 sisters over internet anyways, I was always outnumbered!). I've been out of the PC gaming scene for over 10 years and WoW isn't really what I'm looking for... I'm ready to sit down and "read a good book" a very, very looooonng book!
BTW much thanks to p99 and eqemu!!
