View Full Version : Really starting to hate modern gamers...

So this is a bit of a vent, and rant... I'm 29, got into online gaming around 98/99. One of the things that drew me in was just how many awesome people I got to play with, and the fun times you'd have playing multiplayer in whatever it may be....
It seems like in the past few years, the gaming community has gotten worse....
It feels like the annoying 12 year olds in call of duty from 8 years ago are fellow adults now, but they grew up to be shitty adults. Any of you feel this way?
I just played a game of CS GO, and on the 2nd round being the last person alive on my team, I kill 2 people and then die and we lose the round, and my team vote kicks me, and I get a 2 hour ban..... I'm sure the guys on my team thought it was just frikken hilarious, but this kind of trolling seems rampant in all aspects of gaming now, it's like it's awesome and coveted to be just outright toxic to people you are playing with.
Anyways.... it's sad to see the next generation of gaming culture ruining one of my favourite sanctuaries, is it too much to ask for people to not be entirely shitty to one another while doing a recreational activity that is supposed to be centred around FUN?

As a 30something playing modern games you just have to learn that most the people you are playing with are kids and they are stupid and don't know any better. Having a 14 year old son i can see how 12-14 year old act anymore and it basically the same way they act in video games. It's a instant gratification society anymore no matter how hard you try and steer them away there is always the peer pressure to be a dick to someone etc. Too many parents out there that don't give a rats ass about teaching their kids such things as manners and morals.

Gaming isn't about playing games anymore. A lot has just become a pissing contest that you pay to enter into. Sad, but inevitable.

Will never forget the time I hit "random" on Battlefield 3 and entered a metro map with a huge ticket count (which meant the game wouldn't end for probably an hour or more).
What I didn't realize straight away, despite knowing that EA had ca$$$hed in by giving everyone the chance to run their own server how they wanted, was that I was on the enemy team to the admins of that server.
What had been a progressive stomp by the admin team was almost evening out. Holy shit, I was killing too many of them too often. Guess what happens next? They move me to their team... I stopped playing for a couple of minutes and got kicked.
People are assholes. It's on P99 too (blue particularly with camp lawyering). Some people, if there's an opportunity to be a total dick, will make that move every time, though we are blessed here considering what's "out there".
Assholes in Counterstrike? I'd expect that.
There's always Magic the Gathering Online... if it ever gets completely out of hand on the internet you know that'll be a safe haven ;)

Yes, the quality of online gamers, indeed "gamers" in general has significantly declined over the years. I think it all began with crappy "everyone-can-be-a-winner" games like Halo and such.
The culture has changed. I would prefer to not play with any of the younger bratty types if I could keep from it.
I used to play Zombie Panic! and was banned and perma-banned on several servers for the exclusive reason that I was significantly better than everyone else by a massive margin. I was accused of "hacking" or "auto-aim" when they couldn't fathom how crappy they were. Instead of improving themselves it's easier to bring others down.
Also, a lot of those who never played EQ back in the day and came from WoW are some of the nastiest people. Also, they are nearly worthless players in general.
In my opinion the Golden Age of Gaming was from about 1995 to about 2003~

I had been into computer gaming since I had an Atari that I got for Christmas but back then it wasn't considered gaming. I really didn't get into it until I was in 9th grade, with BBS Door games. I played all the old school FPS, Catacombs of the Abyss, had Doom LAN parties with the Aliens Movie mod. All the Baldur's Gate and Diablo Series. The list is long. I started playing EQ at release. I was 26 years old. I played on live fairly regularly till PoP. Disgusted at what the game had become with that expansion I sold my account January of 2003 and went off to the next big thing.
I'm 40 now. One thing that I've noticed since dusting off EQ and playing here is that back on live, when I would have been driven to anger and retaliation with a flurry of tells, KoS'ing or training morons that had the misfortune of my ire, now I'm finding myself shaking my head, calling them a dumb ass and then going on my merry way.
Now that I'm older, my time is much more valuable than it used to be, and I'd rather spend it entertaining myself than caught up in some bullshit drama with a stupid ass kid.

Being drunk and hanging out with sober people is usually a bummer of a situation, unless you're not supposed to be drunk, then its tolerable.

Welcome to the world of CS:GO. A fuxking terrible game.
literally only competitive game currently worth playing. it's massive fun with friends, and never alone. Solo CS has always been plebeian; you have to found a team if you want to access the real game. Plus the CS skills you've been storing up for the last 15 years are worth something. If you're any good at the game and have a deep sexy resonant commanding voice like mine, 90% of the kids will worship you anyway. CS is literally the only "big" modern game that doesn't have pathetic watered down gameplay, and it allows for real money gambling - I'm a pretty big fan at this point. 1st game worth playing in 5 or 6 years outside of indie world.
:3
The community and "competitive" scene is terrible, but is there any game without a shit community? Even P99's community is absolutely disgusting, and the barrier for entry is way higher than for a major game on Steam. As in all things you get out what you put in. What's great about CS is you can set apart yourself and your intellect with skill at the game and team management, and attract quality people that way.
The only equivalent here is skillful forumquesting and even then, what are you going to attract your forumquest friends to do? Binge on a shitty skill-free grind game until you hate your life again enough to quit? Pretend farming fungis to fund your welfare-level RMT scheme is "pvp"? Where's the catharsis?

Definitely... "free to play" culture encourages it. If people lose a character/account that they spent weeks/months on they'd be pissed so would likely "behave".
What's a 45 minute game of LoL to anyone? If it goes badly, they'll never see anyone again... so people just say it straight, and it encourages a terrible community as its now the norm.

Hard to say, we were on the frontier of online gaming, when it wasn't something you took for granted, and it was amazing being connected to people in a common interest that was more niche. Now, every asshole you didnt want to deal with is playing the same games as you, so its like getting on a subway when you connect to an online game.

Worst of it is that there's games out there now that actively encourage bad behavior.
H1Z1 definitely up there, and I'm guilty of it myself... I've been nice to people only to be shot in the head, stabbed, punched and whatever else. So why not grief other people? I'm a bad person in that kind of game.
EQ (thankfully) encourages cooperation and a friendly environment where you make friends that you'll see again. Even WoW had that to start with before they started clustering servers together, at which time the LFG tool just paired you up with 4 other random people from other servers. After that nobody cared about their own behavior.

Agree but this comment is too hypocritical not to quote, as EQ is the embodyment one big pissin contest, i.e. levels, gear, the 'oh my god hes got that item' aspect. But I suppose back in the day it was done with respect.
And P99 is no different to any other game regarding immaturity factor...
Take this shaman that joined my SolB group a couple weeks ago. He was pretty much perma AFK for about half hour before we booted him, not buffing, slowing one random mob out of every 10 if that, not sitting while medding for literally 10 minutes straight while AFK without warning, then complaining that hes perma OOM when he did pop back to his PC, ignoring tells for melee buffs to the 3 monks we had. At one point we all counted how many mobs we killed before he actually even moved, it got to 22 mobs before he 'twitched' slightly, didnt cast, then another 11 mobs before he actually sat to med. Hilarious.
So, needless to say we removed him, I sent him a tell saying "Let me know when you're back bud" - and he replied in /say to all of us with "you're all trash players anyway, laters". We had hard lols.
Point is - these people are everywhere, not just in CS, CoD, Halo, etc...

My 10 year old nephew is the next generation of gamers and I hate to admit they are just terrible. I watch him play on his console and even on his phone (this clash of clans crap) and all they care about is themselves and shitting on everyone else.
I tried to take him under my wing and show him old school gaming but he doesn't care about teamwork or playing a role, it's all about blowing everyone else up and winning.

I'm 45 now, started EQ in my late 20's when it came out, and can't agree with you more.
I find many (not all) "modern gamers" to be shallow, self-absorbed, uneducated, incurious about the world around them, self-centered, childish, petty and without values.
It's probably why I've been here more than a year and haven't ever bothered with a guild.

minecraft is one of the greatest games of all time and all my little cousins play it obsessively even though they're still young enough to enjoy awful Transformer movies. I don't think the future of children is depressing and horrifying so much as the future of American mass-media. As always, the sharp ones will see through the bullshit and the dumb ones will play BrownSlayerSim 5: America Triumphs.
Also, lol at all these people who think competition in games is a bad thing. It's the foundation of literally every game still worth playing, including EQ red.
"Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers. They also all play call of duty” -a really old fool

A) Cool that this thread got some traction cause I think it's a pretty interesting topic to delve into.
and
B) I had pretty much every system worth having, NES, SNES, Sega, Sega 32x, Sega Saturn (maybe not worth having lol) N64, PS1, only consoles I skipped out on were dreamcube, ps2 ps3, the wii, and the new turdpiles of xbox 1 and ps4.
One of my biggest regrets to this day involving my oldschool game collection, was when I was about 14 I took my NES, SNES, about 200 games, my Sega's, basically all my shit except my N64 and PS1, and sold them at a gaming store to get enough money to buy a better video card for Everquest lol... I really really wish I still had that collection, being a dumb kid I didn't realize how baller it would be to have in this era.

Funny you mention that, I remember way back in the day people would get pissed if you inspected them without asking first.... lol, the culture of gaming has changed so much.
Like other posters have touched on.... Being a "gamer" used to be a weird sub genre culture that the majority of people didn't bother with. Having a massive collection of games, with hardcore gamer friends growing up was different, and like someone earlier mentioned allowed you an outlet away from people you didn't want to spend time with.... and now EVERYONE games. The full retards have infected the internet en mass.

Price is clearly not that much of a barrier anymore. See how well Call of Duty 4 Map packs 1-4 have done over the years and WoW is still going pretty strong with its sub base although its lost a few million by now.
Going to be assholes everywhere in real life and online. All about finding a good core to play with. Honestly can't even think of a game outside of P99 that I've played that hasn't been with the same few dozen guys from a clan from some no name game 8 years ago.
