edit- i will say tho, i had nothing but respect for the purist guilds. guilds like Drac Tribe, XK, Da Iggles, etc. but there were some lightie purists as well, and we all know that was a much harder road. Guilds like Sect of Silence, elders of underfoot, happy little hug factory, and northern crusaders.

Think it was just vz that had a nice community pal we on sullon for sure didn't but the pvp was great

i do think the teams mattered. people took pride in their sides, enemies respected each other, and players tended to be friendly towards people on the same team. it was a rare community. we respected PvP, all sides respected LnS, or else it was enforced by street justice. we didnt purposely involve mobs or let NPCs steal the glory of our pvp kills. we were able to all co exist. sure there was some scumbaggery, but it was not even close to being the majority of the server. it would actually catch you off guard because of how rare it was

Darkies vs lighties was awesome up until PoP. Then it got a little too challenging without bards/Druids/Rangers/pallys. Mostly bards and rangers. Draconic Tribe (then Ebon Dawn) held out as long as they could until they finally Xteamed.

PoP and literally every top guild being forced to xteam to compete ruined VZ. it was one thing when it was just the 12p or silent souls / vexare. but when Fated & DDW merged into Aduentus, Vexare absorbed Silent Souls and Macabre to form Torrent, Defiant went xteam, but to be honest i dont recall what happened to XK or Da Iggles.

I have been an avid watcher of your YouTube channel. My Favorit is the 80 Player pvp in Seb between Azrael and Holo. Been playing on red for a couple of months in 2015, but the red server was deadlocked by a then dominant (and probably superior) guild.

I got 2 questions that have been burning on my fingers for some time:

a) I played VZ on as well, but only classic and kunark. So the magical time you are referencing above was always pre-velly for me. Feeling awesome with an epic, fighting in Karnors or Lavastorm because Ragefire was still worth killing for the Crews.
Question is: Will there ever be a re-launch (I understand a wipe is out of the question) of red with 6-month classic / 6-month kunark or a new introducting of red Teams ?
What would the upkeep costs for that additional server be, dont you think the community could shoulder that via crowdsourcing? If it was 200per month, maybe it can get prefinanced for a first 6 month. Whats your thoughts on that? Ever gonna happen?

b) Second question is: Do you have any more pvp Videos from red server you could upload ? even TNF? There are some Videos out there, but most footage is not shot from the stead perspective of a GM.


And thanks for your positive contribution to project99. Even if a) doesnt work out, I appreciate having been able to relive some 16 year old memories for free.

I agree it's better to keep EQ as a good memory than trying to relive the experience in an emulator that can never recapture the fun we had experiencing the game/world for the first time.

But I think people are too cynical about newer games, I agree most MMOs suck but there's tons of interesting games out there in other genres. And I don't have time as an adult to play MMOs anyways.

a) i know that in the past we have discussed another blue server further down the road, as well as a Discord PvP server, and a teams PvP server. so while i can't promise anything, i feel i can say that the staff is certainly open to the idea. Players are always free to donate, but with that said, if it came done to a financial hurdle, we'd let the players know so they could have an opportunity to help if they supported the idea.

b) sadly most of my videos are from streams, and i had to stop streaming read because stream snipers would use it to coordinate attacks against whomever i was recording. that seb video you mentioned i only caught because i was recording a video in anticipation of having a guest from the red server :)


ps- assuming you were XK, since you say you were classic & kunark, were you part of that 12p vs everyone for seb fiasco? because those fights for seb were amazing. and then the lighties turned on the darkies and stole the zone :P

If I remember correctly, XK tried to x-team "light" by only recruiting cat bards. Raid targets became very difficult to kill without resist songs and bard mana regen, but it was still a hard pill to swallow for the proud dark races of VZ. X-teaming was a huge stigma back then.

When that failed, they merged with Fated into Aduentus and were shunned for a short while until Defiant and AO/ED followed.

Ebon Dawn was the last big darkie raiding guild for some time, until they merged with Ancient Orden to Ancient Dawn and eventually battled for the topdog throne with Defiant for a few expansions. Not sure if either side won before the Zek merge killed the community -- and with it the server.

One other darkie guild emerged quite a while after Ancient Dawn had formed. I can't remember the name. They were pretty successfull in their own way, but with each expansion x-teaming moved further from much needed convenience to absolute necessity, so they never really had a chance.

This was a very long time ago, so I'm not 100% sure about it.

Sorry guys, already have been lightie... one important aspect that I remember when three teaming against darkie was that lots of short race rogue were traitor waiting to hit you in the back... what an awful bunch...
I remember having lots of fun factioning around cabilis to get my greenmist as a human knight on VZ... in addition to the "trooper" that is in fact a shaman and thus is KOS, I had to do with iksar players to turn in my bone chips. watching iksar reaction while crossing cabilis was always fun too.

Holy crap I completely forgot about Gruffer! Just got hit with a huge wave of nostalgia.

I cant imagine having as much fun on any other server in the classic era that I had on VZ.

-My buddy making a trade with a "darkie" to get his gnome warrior an executioners axe and having like 10 of us hanging out on the other side of a hill in case pvp ensued and he lost his plat/item!
-Making a macro of "/w all" for a damn high elf wizard named Linnett that always found me in unrest at like 20% health and would one shot me and steal a piece of my bronze gear.
-Eventually trying out darkies and locking down Mistmoore for 2-3hrs at the zoneline w/ a group of 8 RL friends until about 20-30 shorties and elves teamed up to take it back from us.
-Midget Mafia, House of the Black Rose, Defiant, 12 Prophets, Da Iggles...so many damn good memories

So my plan for the invasion was to try to lure the high level darkies away from Nektulos. We first engaged in North Ro and drew Mercenaries of Darkness and other organized darkies who killed a few of us and camped the corpses. We then teleported en mass to West Commons and invaded Nektulos from there. The misdirection let us have our way with the noobs in Nektulos for a good solid hour before high levels got involved and started training guards on us, thus ending the invasion. One of my finest moments as a guild leader and organizer of player-run open world events. Linidan was a pal.

I remember doing a few run as a 20 or so bard running with money to sol ro for armor quest... crossing nektulos with darkies shouting things you don't understand and possibly trying to catching you was rather frightening

Hooked up with Gruffer's crew on the Sleeper progression server. We became Ascendency in Vanguard and merged into Xanit K'Ven when the server merge happened.

Vanguard was great. I played with alot of old HECK members there. It was a great game once you got passed the bugs.

Was a warrior in VG named Honour, and think I might of had a cleric at that time named Baand. Played from just about launch up till everyone in XK decided to take a break since there was no raid content out yet and I got left with the bag so to speak. Ended up transferring servers and joining BoTs. Im still semi active on the XK forums and I got the mumble info from Tipp the other week.

Haven't been active in a long time and red isn't worth playing on. My crew is waiting for Discord or Teams if they ever happen. The sense is that the staff has their plate full keeping the project afloat with all the staff controversies and any new servers are on the back burner.

hum, that sounds not so great, I recovered 6 hard drive (4 IDE and 2 SATA), but I've only been able to read one of the IDE ones. I've only been able to find screenshot on the sata ones and they date from 2004...

The IDE drive I was able to read returned nothing interesting, I guess I have to reassemble a computer and put the three other drive inside to see if I can recover something there.

The never ending Nek / EC fights truly were a fond memory. Unfortunately I lost those screenshots years ago.
