Rangers are fun and can be effective when played well despite being more or less intrinsically inferior to many other classes. They have special tricks up their sleeves and are a lot of fun to play and adventure with in EQ.

I had a tough choice between making a ranger and a cleric but ultimately chose my cleric because the clerics abilities let them be more helpful in more meaningful ways, more often.

The ranger is a great class to actually role play a ranger and just cruise around open zones being cool, and in velious they PVP o.k. too.

Rangers have gotten popular on red because they make pretty good PKers, particularly with resists being the way they are. It's nice to be able to fire your bow at levitating wizards and such. And I've seen people with the lightning sticks. But it's still a challenging class to play and rangers face many of the same problems here as they do on blue.

If you want to play a ranger, play a ranger. If you want to be the best (there ever was), then play something else.

rangers are only good at level 15 in crushbone or unrest

Rangers are good but only after getting 60 and at least epic and some sky gear plus full resist jewelry and other things. If you did get a windstriker in group PVP they're amazing. Solo you can do ok, but not great.

It's a long road to that though. You're better off starting with a farm class like enchanter or shaman who are also strong in PVP then rolling a melee twink.

Still arent popular but a lot of people make twinks and then give up. good rangers exceedingly rare. Main rangers even rarer.

terrible spells, terrible melee dmg

bow dmg on eq emu is like 0 , yea if you get a windstriker you get a crappy stun proc, but that wont kill your enemy.

I really wish people would stop telling everyone to roll a farm class. I've been watching so many shamans/druids get bored and quit because they don't enjoy playing those classes.

I have personally watched plenty of people roll a pure melee here, or a hybrid as their first toon and make it to 60. Here is the catch, they have fun because they are playing what they want to play.

What everyone has posted is 100% true.

Roll the character you can enjoy the most regardless of its +'s and -'s because you are going to get bored and at some point the game is going to be a grind, and this grind and really the entire quest to level 60 is a lot more fun when you are playing a character you love.

I personally don't have the soul or time to grind two characters to high level, let alone the initial character being done just to power level the mellee or hybrid that I actually want to play. Not for me...

I say pick the toon you love the most. Rangers can be a lot of fun and it was my main on live, but you will definitely get tired of being beaten mercilessly by large races in melee. Even some Shamans could squash my ranger at low levels... it hurts just to think about.

However, some "pharming classes" are just plain awesome classes. Druids are amazing, shamans are amazing, enchanters are too. Necros are amazing but seem sort of under-powered here on project 1999 compared to live.

You can't go wrong though... Iksar monk is a lot of fun and doesn't need a lot of gear...feign death makes exploring the game a lot more fun but being KOS makes it a lot less fun. Rogues are great at high levels and all the time, but being a lowbie naked rogue is HARD unless you get lucky and find a nice group to grind up with.

I've always thought the EQ ranger was a pretty cool class. It's too bad they suck ass.

On the bright side ranger only things drop and there are no caps on raid spots.

Loving my ranger

My ranger is fun and can add a lot to a group. I frequently pull, CC and tank all at the same time while doing dcent DPS. With long range on bows/arrows and sneak I can easily break camps (especially throwing Harmony into the mix since the really popular zones are all outdoor flagged). Having the ability to self-buff is pretty fantastic and even when I'm not tanking my buffs can be handy.

The big glaring issue is being at a huge disadvantage in PvP. Rangers just don't get good jousting weapons and most of your spells don't offer much beyond spamming root on someone.

If/when track gets fixed to actually be usable in PvP that can be extremely valuable and I do love having it available in PvE. You will have channelling which gives you an edge on monks/wars/rogues since you can channel port pots or pumice where they can't.

I also had the advantage of getting twinked by a friendly chap when I started on the server, making those early levels a lot less painful (no xp bonus when I started and a ~100 pop so grouping was very very rarely found)

you know, people will tell you this sucks, and that sucks, I play a god damn cleric as my only character and I have fun. it's challenging. if everyone only rolled power class, we'd only have all of the same and no matter how geared and twinked, the fun would be limited because the exp would be limited. and the possibilities. you go and roll what you want.

I know of a ranger, in the north. in the wild, he is only known as strider.

Biggest disasvantage is that rangers cany be ogres. In velious we all can get the 50/60 tantors tusk but ubtil you are basically maxed out them ogres just seem to hit harder.

Weaponshield makes them at least somewhat useful in certain raids. :)
