I used to rock climb with a guy who did that shit. He said the guy that would change the beacon light would get a bonus in their crew :)
I know it's impractical most of the time but it's pretty nerve wracking how much they seem to not be protected or clipped in while climbing.

I forget what my buddy told me but the pay isn't all that great. Not enough to make him continue climbing.
