So I am just curious but I don't really know EQ well enough to know if alot of shit gets cached constantly on login/outs that might slow down EQ load times after a few months. When I used ramdisk, I zoned pretty much as fast as one could permitting server lag. I swapped to a SSD and zoned equally as fast, over time it has deteriorated and been anywhere from 5-10 seconds extra zone time.

On red this is a big deal, It is the difference between zoning in and a wizard already about to land a nuke on you(since your character pops in before you fully load in on your screen and is targettable) or a rogue backstabbing you. I just logged into my velious beta setup that was a fresh installed folder made solely for the beta and loading times were way faster. Granted I am already in the process of saving some .ini files and ui settings to copy over to a fresh EQ install, Was wondering if anyone knew of anything like this that would cause it to slow over time or what not. The zone times between red and beta and another server I tested(other server was 180ms vs the 70ms on red) was just as quick as it was when I first started on SSD.

i've noticed this too; i used to zone waaaay faster than p much anyone, and these days it seems like most people load in faster than me

not very familiar with SSDs but this 2 min video has some concerning info (trim command / garbage collection)
https://revision3.com/tekzillabites/why-you-should-never-defrag-your-ssd/

aside from that, see if its the same result with logs disabled?

also there is one option about caching common zones in EQ maybe try enable/disable that. That's in the initial setup screens where you see options for luclin models.

I do run with logs enabled full time, I def did not used to so I will have to try that also. I know about not defragging an ssd, as well as that pretty much every ssd comes with trim for the last 2-3 years.

edit-
logs=false is already making a big difference it feels like, not sure why though. whenever my logs get over 5mb per char I always delete them or move certain ones so that shouldn't really be an issue if its loading them or whatnot. Unless it does something else to cause the lag, Either way I probably don't have to reinstall now if I keep log enabling to in game only and flip it on/off. I may still re install just to see, but im zoning just as fast as I was before nearly. Still is slightly slower since the server moved though but nothing I can do to fix that.

might be a combination of writing to disk plus any antivirus program

I find that i'll have to disable logs in-game when my screen jumps on each write. cant figure out what causes it yet though.

Only anti virus i use is Microsoft Security Essentials . Its actually not bad . And if your looking for real speed zoning , consider using a program like softpedia ramdisk and converting some of your ram into a ram drive . Some later gen mobo's have this feature built into their BIOS features.

I used to use ramdisk from one of the larger companies forgot name, But it was inconvenient compared to using a SSD and the ssd is just as quick and less hassle. Been doing fine since turning auto logging off. Still planning on a fresh EQ install when I get a chance to see if that makes it any faster.

I too used to notice occasionally a big screen fps lag when log was enabled and i did like a /who or more then 10+ lines were written to the log quickly it would lockup each time for a few seconds. Haven't had it ina long time though.
