Where is the damage counted if a mage casts a ds on his pet? Does it count as player or pet damage? I wanted to know how this might change the xp because of the player needing to do 50%.

Neither, it is counted as neutral damage. You will still need to out damage your pet to get full xp. Also if 100% of damage comes from DS, the mob poofs, no exp, no loot.

Does the same hold true for the fire pet's ds?

All DSes are neutral damage, except Cleric's Mark spell should be their damage.
Basically this is what happens:
Mob has 200 HP
DS does 100 DMG
Pet does 60 DMG
You so 40 DMG
In this situation, your pet did 60 to your 40 damage, and per steals 50% EXP.
If it is reversed and you did 60 DMG with pet doing 40, you would get full exp.
Or if your pet did 40 DMG, and 100 DMG still comes from DS, then some random wizard ran by and nukes for 60 DMG, Wizard would get exp.

Which is the very reason why I hate people who want to help when I solo with my mage :D
