So on a super basic level, necros are underpowered right now for PVP, from what I've heard it's due to dispellable DOTS and long cast times. How do they fare in Velious PVP?

Gear may allow fights to go longer (Melee DPS will be higher though so probably not much longer).
I would say your struggle against melees will get slightly worse.
You may close the gap slightly with other casters because of more hps and resists on gear. Longer the fight better for a necro vs druid/wiz. It really depends on how the extra resists work with nukes, and that is unknown.

when they patch in the new resist and AC code, pretty much every class will drop in power except for necro

Do pets reflect live damage in pvp ie negligible ?
Considering pets are situational (cast time, mana, limits your ability to navigate certain areas), I don't see why there can't be some adjustments made in the spirit of balance. It is a double edged sword anyways, seeing as how it makes you a higher priority target as a result (see: Mages of vztz).

well played necro should kill any caster now, provided they are equally geared they are nowhere near as powerful as live and that has been a turn off to most people playing the class here. You can get kills with trucidation, but they're not great in mass pvp just a low impact class if you're talking skirmishes on this box like 1v1 3v3, they're just as good.
i had recently switched from bis geared wiz to necro just cuz every1 and their aunt rolls wiz here, they can do well.. maybe the added hp/mana will help vs melees

Also, believe both the stun and lifetap (which also did more dmg?) were long-range insta casts on vztz.
iirc on p99 EoT only has LT and it is a melee proc

The only difference between necro here and live is lifetap return coefficients being minus'd 33% on healing portion.
But here lieftaps return life through skinned targets unlike live, your lifetap had to deal atleast 1 dmg for it to return life(not dot lifetap). Which is actually a pretty large advantage against Wizard and Enchanter they didn't have on live.

Even if necros are the same here as they are on live they are gimped by not being stronger than on live. Melees and nuke classes are stronger on this server than they should be.

Here's what's different:
Pets are worse here.
DoTs are worse here.
Every other class (except possibly Shaman?) are better.
As soon as I can get potions to cure backstab, flying kick, and 90% of all melee damage then Necros will be balanced.
Even if necros are the same here as they are on live they are gimped by not being stronger than on live. Melees and nuke classes are stronger on this server than they should be.
Also this. It's ridiculous that melees have insane hit ratios and doing non-classic damage with 2handers and Wizards going hog wild on non-lures.

you have a dozen spells to chose from that do that, and potions which are usable by every class in the game

No it actually could happen on Live I only saw it twice but it was possible.
If I started here when you could bind in pot-room I would actually be playing a Necro, portability the only reason I play a wiz here.

Problems with Necros:
1) Pet's do not do the damage they are supposed to and do not hit for max damage as frequently as they are supposed to.
2) Magic line of spells does not have dispell counters, which they did on classic, you could not click a pumice and remove winged death first try for example. You can spend 4 seconds casting a splurt, followed by another 4 seconds for pyrocuror only to see both spells get pelled off in 2 seconds, leaving you with 640 mana deficit and taking melee damage in the process of casting those spells.
3) Melee max damage relatively correct compared to weapons, but hit/miss rate does not match classic, melee hit way too often and hit for max damage way too often, THIS IS WHAT THE PETS SHOULD BE DOING!.
4) Resists.... Necro spells were very hard to resist, I distinctly remembering the heat line of spells and heart line of spells rarely getting resisted, even when low level NPCs cast them. Non-lure nukes on the otherhand were resisted easily and required a resist debuff before being cast.

In early 50s PvP it's the only good dot other than ebolt? Either way, 1 pell gets both vexing moridinia and pyro.

Teach me how to pvp at level 51. I guess I am doing it wrong. I should be using Ignite Blood, which hits for 30 dmg every 6 seconds? How about a sweet 218 damage lifetap that takes 6.1 seconds to cast?
When Kunark launched, Splurt was considered overpowered and people wanted it nerfed, mainly because it would outright kill a level 45ish caster.

I played a necro as my main from Kunark - PoP on VZ.
The 33% nerf to the heal portion of LT's and the dispel mechanics on red99 do hurt the class, however, the biggest problem for necros is how much smarter the average red99 player is compared to live. Proper buff management is the best defense against a necro.

It was legal to buy accounts with plat at one point in time. That is no longer allowed.
