I have just stumbled upon project 1999, and I am very interested in starting to play!
Was reminiscing , and do people still ask each other "may I inspect" ?
Random question, this 1999 experience looks like so much fun though ! I gotta make a druid main again to farm giants so I can make a twink monk :)

hell no
I spam click mofuckas all day
DONT CARE
but nah, I don't think anyone asks
My impression is it's not considered as rude here as it was (at least on my server) on Live.
Perhaps it's just me. I'm just older now and don't care as much :P

i had a level 16 ogre in greater faydark get really mad at me for not asking. he did the classic back up 10 feet or so, so the window drops. made me die laughing, he was pissin pissed though. think he told me guild leader, or told his guild leader never to invite me. he did something. OH, he was gonna bind me but then he refused, too. lol this guy was awesome

I just turn it off cuz I got tired of constantly inspecting myself. I couldn't care less what you are wearing.
People inspect me all the time. I assume most of the time it's by accident but even if on purpose I don't care. Maybe you'll give me an upgrade to the cloth cap I am wearing!
Seriously, why would anyone care?
Some people do ask. I don't mind either way, but it's a nice way to start a conversation and discuss gear and experiences getting it.

If someone walked up to you on the street irl and said hey man those are awesome tennis shoes are you going to freak out? /boggle

if a train of 10 skeletal warriors ran your way in real life are you going to freak out?
Just was curious because this is the classic experience I had, and people would always ask before inspect. When I was a noob I would always wonder why people would run away once I started inspecting them, or they would say "you can ask first" or something along those lines.
TBH i never really understood why it was such a big deal, but hey, nostalgia's nostalgia, right?

Never understood how it was rude. Frankly, I'm not even sure why the game even informs you someone is inspecting you. Big deal.

I always thought people who actually did/cared about this were the biggest lamers ever. I inspect without asking all the time, and I did during live.

Inspecting is caring. :)
Which explains why I don't.

I've been amazed by the amount of inspection on this server. Personally I don't care, but it is kind of weird coming from a server on live where it was a major faux pas.

Ha-haa! Mines bigger than yours!
No wait, I dont ever remember it being an issue on tunare. Anyway the server seemed like 50% wood elf ranger and all with the same gear.

People are fairly passive to it here - you'll get it a lot in the EC tunnel :p

We have a lot more knowledge than we used to. We know a group can be great with 5 warriors and a bard... so long as things are managed right. Got to know who is MT (fungi?) and who is gonna live at 40% or less life for them crippling blows.
And there is a lot more accidental inspecting than there used to be. Playing in third person and mouse steering results in muchos right clicks. Usually inspect is off though.

That's ridiculous
The ONLY reason to ask on LIVE was on pvp..
Inspecting is like a threat, see what he has.. /worth killing and looting.

I accidentally inspect ppl all the time while trying to ninja loot shit but I give no shits when ppl inspect me... BUT... there is a moment of self-consciousness because of my mormon underwear.
Seriously tho, inspect and pity me all you want! :D

Heh I wondered this same thing and still do in the back of my mind before I spam click mutha fuckers all day (like cucumber).
I was surprised that blue servers had this etiquette rule tbh. I was on Rallos and we didn't like random inspects from strangers because people would inspect you - pick what they wanted to loot off you - then wait till you were at 20% and PK you...
On p99 I learned it was just a common classic EQ thing.. Still dont understand it on non item loot servers. But what the hey We're all really, really weird.

You probably wouldn't like it if people were peaking in your windows. I know it's not the same, but I think the psychology is. Your inventory is your home in a mmo.
/toggleinspect off, because if I cared what you're wearing I'd ask you to link it
wish there was a message to turn off the annoying message when other players inspect me
always smile when somebody asks permission to inspect, reminds me of that first year of live when everything was shiny and nobody realized the idiot hybrid xp penalty existed, always say "go ahead" or equivalent

It used to be considered rude and offensive and essentially as "intent to harm" on LIVE Red servers - if you are looking at man's gear - you most likely want to steal it ;)

I was on Vallon Zek and there was no such thing but i played much more when kunark came out so i didn't experience item loot a lot.
I do remember seeing a lot of naked necromancers when item loot was still in though haha. :D
Obviously, without item loot, inspecting didn't matter.

Actually yes I would. Looking is different to inspecting. Ripping my shoes off to check all the 'stats' like the inside sole, how well the laces tie etc is rude!

illist the human female cleric got mad at me when i inspected her whilst she was medding at the GFay zoneline in LFay in 2000.
she didn't even have anything decent, full suit of sol ro armour and some shitty mace.
Do you play here illist? you suck.

I never got mad about being inspected, but it's nice when people are social.
It always felt to me like a foreigner that walks up to you and invades your personal space without touching you. Technically they're not doing anything wrong. They're just standing as close as they do in their culture, but I don't like it all that well.
It doesn't make me mad, but there's a better way, a more polite way.

I really think inspecting people, particularly people of your own class, lets you figure out what you need to buy to be sort of efficient. I know there is Magelo, but most of the people on there are level 55 or higher so you are not going to buy that stuff at level 10. I think it is a compliment to be inspected. But there is some weird ducks on here. I say go for it. The vast majority of people on here don't care one way or another. :)

I've brought this up a few times recently. I thought I'd remembered it but I also thought it was a little silly. Regardless, I distinctly remember EVERYONE doing it on my server - inspecting someone without asking could put you on the social blacklist for forever if you did it to the wrong person, and if someone said no, you just didn't do it.

Yeah on Torvo it was a no no in the beginning to inspect. I think on here people have changed. But in the tunnel a lot of people are afk so hard to know if they might care or gone having dinner lol. I mean it sure does not hurt to ask! But sort of a pain to do a tell to do it. I would not just target someone and ask. Everyone knows your doing it and if the person gets pissed wow then you look like a goat.

In the age of modern MMOs where this feature is overly accessible... it's not really considered rude on here anymore.

I remember on Morell Thule it was a privilege not a right lol, it had to do with the whole role playing thing, it kind of breaks character and was seen to be just too Gamer orientated.
I remember someone challenging me to a duel because I accidentally inspected him in the Bazaar, he wanted a throw down in the pvp arena lol.
Stuff like that doesn't happen these days
