Rogue Race vs gear

So I went to create my rogue today and was looking at starting stats for them all. Knowing Velious is quite a bit away I have to prioritize. Personally I love halflings <3, but with them I cant wear gear such as a Treeweave or hero bracer and that +20 easy str gone. And I see in the gear post on the wiki that these are 2 pieces that are still very good with Kunark gear. I know Leveling would be faster as a Halfling but would the loss in gear make it more worthwhile to be a wood elf or even a barb?

You would say that :D. Prefer Barb myself. High innate str leads to being able to wear tons more resist/hp gear. If your not found of the tallness i'd go Dwarf for same reasons.

From what I've heard, race won't matter as much when Velious comes out because of all the additional high STR items available. I suspect a lot of those items also have resists to go with the STR stats.

I made a wood elf rogue and I'm still glad I did. I'd hate to look at a Barb or Dwarf all day.

I can't argue with that. Human rogues are probably the ones I get jealous of looks wise as an elf. They look really cool in full black plate and their Velious plate helm doesn't awful either.

For absolute highest loot compatibility, Dark Elf or Human.

Pretty sure barb illusion didnt get put on Flayed mask til luclin or end of velious at very earliest. So add barb to that list atleast for awhile :P

I'd add Gnome to that list. The odds of getting a Mask of Tinkering are slim to none, so for most of the rogue population, not gonna happen.

I don't know about everywhere. I play a dark elf rogue and am currently a citizen of qeynos. Faction work isn't that hard if you are going to be hunting there anyway.

Black burrow has no negative hits to worry about. Good exp and fangs for turn ins, there are still a few npcs to worry about but that's part of the experience, not everyone likes you in real life right? Why should an organic game be any different. Some people are racist, others just don't like your style or hair color. Anyway I play a teir dal rogue because it's the race class combination that closest reflects my personality. Choose what you feel you'll have the most fun playing or if you're into it, role playing.
