Hi all,
I used to play a dwarf warrior, erudite SK, and erudite wizard on Ayonae Ro from around the time Velious came out through the Planes of Power expansion. I came upon this project recently and I think I'm going to start up this week.. just had a few questions about the server.
I'm kind of stuck between starting with a rogue, wizzy, SK, shammy, cleric, or paladin (really narrowed it down, I know :) ). I was browsing around the wiki and saw some population counts by class - is there really an overpopulation of clerics/shammies? I'm also kind of leaning toward a less-expensive class to gear at first e.g. rogue and then rolling an alt once I can make some plat. Any advice as to which would be best? I know that's a loaded question but I haven't played EQ in a way long time.
Also, what's this about race/class EXP penalties? I'm having a hard time finding a good amount of information on this.
Thanks in advance for your replies!

I'm not a veteran, but I'm guessing more solo-friendly classes will have better early earning potential.

Shaman are everywhere....you turn around to avoid bumping into one, and you step on another ones toes. With that being said - It's a 'play what you want' sort of situation. Who cares if there's hundreds of them, if you really enjoy playing it?
The server has been around for a pretty long time, so most of the Rogues have their epic starting on day 1. I'm not saying this to deter you, but a lot of low levels discriminate against newbie Rogues if they are using something lesser (I don't agree with this, but it's true)
Cleric is definitely not a bad choice for a first character, provided you think it sounds fun - They don't have many expensive spells, no need to bother with researching, wisdom gear is some of the cheapest stuff out there and they're always needed. I've never heard a guild say "Man, we just have way to many Clerics in this guild". Not to mention they have one of the easier epics to complete.

Thanks in advance for your replies! If you want less expensive to gear, don't pick a melee. Paladin is the least played class on the server though, so their armor tends to be cheaper. Don't play a wizard unless you really want one. Not good in groups, so you solo a lot. Shammy is very popular, very wanted in groups, and can solo very well at later levels. But they're expensive. Cleric would be the least dependent on gear and have the easiest time getting groups, although there are a lot of clerics also. Rogues are less common and very desirable, but people kind of expect you to have your epic even at low levels. You can get by without it, but it's rare to find a non-epic rogue these days even at level 1.
Hybrids all have a 40% penalty. All evil races also have a penalty, thus a troll or Iksar SK has a 68% penalty. Rogues have a bonus. Clerics are neutral. No penalty or bonus.

Thanks to all of you for your responses! They've been hugely helpful. It's looking like I'm probably going to roll a cleric (or maybe an enchanter, never done that before) for my first go on the server. A shame that rogues have to be using end-game gear to do well, I don't remember it being like that when I originally played - then again, my first character being a dwarf warrior was difficult because I was so gear-dependent. Nevertheless, can't wait to get started. I'm looking forward to seeing you all in-game!

The Rogue situation is just because Kunark has been out for so long, and the Rogue epic is so cheap to MQ (25-30k) anyone who has been playing for a decent amount of time can easily get one for a Rogue alt.
Enchanter is pretty much the most overpowered class in the game atm, and pretty cheap to gear (Charisma gear is pretty inexpensive). Very desirable in groups and can solo/duo the hardest content in the game. Their main downside is they're less useful for raiding.

Gunda, are you going dwarf again? I'll be rolling my dwarf cleric once I get this all downloaded - we should hang out if you're in Butcherblock.

Thanks for the enchanter info, Feriyo. That sounds like a great direction to go as well, I definitely need the ability to either group or solo depending on my schedule.
Baraki, I'm leaning towards either High Elf Cleric, or Dark Elf Enchanter, but I haven't quite decided on one yet. Either way, let's definitely meet up in game! I haven't gotten the client or anything downloaded yet - should I just send you a tell once I log in (will Baraki be your name)?

of your choices, you could always go wiz till 34 and port for money. they dont need alot of gear unless they are quad kiting.
only downside is sometimes it's hard to get groups as a wiz so you'll be left to solo alot which means alot of sitting on your butt. great if you want to afk alot.
grouping clerics also dont need gear (unless their tanks are idiots and cant hold agro). the way mana regen works, if you arent on max it doesnt matter what your mana pool is, you regen it at the same rate.

Hey Baraki,
I haven't made it in yet! I'm having a terrible time figuring out how to get Titanium set up. I think I made some progress, and I'm hoping to be up and online by Saturday afternoon. Not sure on name yet, but I think I'm between a druid and enchanter as my first class. I keep reading these starter threads and a lot of people are saying druids are a great way to level up, get plat, and have diversity between solo/grouping. We'll see! I'll post when I get my character up and will look for you to send a tell in-game.

I would suggest just rolling the character you want to play, dont waste time making a toon to twink a character. People are very friendly here and you will curley get some donations etc

Enchanter are great. If you want a balance of solo and grp that would be a great place to start. If you like solo more try a necro I play but haven't in awhile. Are you still having trouble getting titanium setup?

True, enchanters get groups as often as they want them... the only pain is completing the epic :p

Same for clerics, the epic is a pain but otherwise a fun class and always in demand :)

Hey everybody, thanks for all of the responses. I finally got everything installed last night, so I'm all set. I'm in the process of trying out an enchanter, druid, and cleric. I forgot just how tough old school EQ is so it may take me a bit. I'll post my character names once I've got it figured out.
