Almost that time, indeed!

Looking to be a great season of SEC football coming up. Tides been rolling but we have to see how a new QB works out. TN has an awesome new coach in second season and things are seriously looking up for them. GA has pretty much everybody but Murray coming back. Seems to be the same for a&m. Missouri came from out of nowhere to be awesome last season it will be interesting to see what happens again. Ever since SC got Spurrier they've been a factor in the east and should continue. We can all rejoice that Florida sucks and hopefully will. List goes on and on.

And we have the premiere of the new SEC TV network coming later this month.

Going to be a great fall!

Ever find it interesting, the sports that have/had a practical purpose for humans at some point in time like running, swimming, jumping, wrestling, etc nobody gives a fuck about cept for maybe that brief window where they are competing at say, the olympics once every four years. Yet a sport as absurd as football that has absolutely no RL application is so compelling that people like you will spend every waking moment of your god forsaken lives following it ever so closely as if your lives depended on it.

What puzzles me, even assuming that sports are inherently worthwhile, is how a team of players from all around the country and occasionally -- if not frequently, depending on the sport -- from other countries entirely, who've probably been passed around a few times already and who were ultimately assembled by management and coaching staff who are probably predominantly from somewhere else themselves... are supposed to represent [insert city here], much less the people who live around there.

Even if they were all local boys, it not clear how their athletic achievements would have anything to do with me. It's not like I was there training them up through their early years.

But it's not about the players, or the sport even really. It's a shared experience thing.

In fact, there's your answer. The sports you listed are too individualistic. It's easier to take vicarious joy in a vaguely defined entity like a team than in a person. The Olympics only work because the individuals are mostly abstracted away into countries.

Of course that's way too thinky for a sports thread I have no business posting in to begin with! Begin flames.

Fascinates me as well. Most of these players have no sense of allegiance towards their city. They go where the money and trophies are.

You hit on some good points but I will tell you one thing. In general, wildly successful people do not follow sports. It's a ritual most prevalent in lower/middle income areas. I have a friend who participates in 10 fantasy leagues, knows who ran a 4.4 40 at the last combine and could tell you without batting an eyelash every team that won their conference finals in the past 20 years. Same guy complains about how hard it is to get a job in today's economy.

Losers gravitate towards sports. I understand that is a generalization but as Adam Carolla says, they are called that for a reason.

I'm about two sick days away from living in a box, drooling on the streets while yelling "WTS body for rations, pst" at pedestrians. My life is a mediocre drama of failed tries, missed opportunities, and destitution, and I haven't followed sports since high school when I had to start paying my own damn cable bill. (12 years ago).

Moral? You don't need sports to suck at life.

Even my eq skills are sub par.

Yup

Can't wait, just bought my tickets a couple weeks ago for the opening game of the season up in Seattle. Packers are back in town to avenge the Fail Mary (which I was also present for)!
