View Full Version : Regarding Multiple IP Exemptions and avoiding the Ban Hammer

OK so wifey briefly played some wow with me and I'd like to get her into EQ. The reason we didn't stick with WoWing together was that we don't get a LOT of time together what with the kids and all, so 2 subscriptions for a few sessions per month is expensive.
In that context, Project 1999 seems like a great idea. I have read and understand the rules regarding boxing. All good and I agree with the no boxing rule. I have no desire to break the rules, but I also have no desire to get banned accidentally or because what I'm doing looks suss!
She's a little bit terrible with the mouse sometimes. We used /follow a bit while duoing in WoW. Is this dangerous?
If I want to do a transfer or get a port or a quick rez or any number of the terrible things that could look box-y but you could ask legitimately a friend to do, and I ask her to login to help me out, is this a problem?
Just trying to get some feedback on how this will work in practice. I'm having too much of a good time here to get hamm0red!
Edit: that should be multiple account ip exemptions, but I think you get the idea.
Welcome.
The rule is pretty simple, play 1 at a time and youll stay out of trouble. People get banned all the time for quickly logging in that second character to rez/buff/transfer themselves. It's a big nono and highly enforced. If you play by the rules you have nothing to worry about! At worst a GM will ask you to do some things to prove you aren't boxing.

That's great but you didn't really answer my question, instead you freaked me out more!
What constitutes 'playing'? You mention getting banned for quick tasks. Is her helping me with a small task (breaking a camp / porting / transferring gear) liable to do get us banned? If she has the laptop in the kitchen and just sells crap while I'm hunting?
I don't want to cheat but I want to know what to expect going into this and how to avoid getting in trouble. It seems like the sort of thing that it would be pretty easy to come afoul of and I'd rather not bother if its too mush hassle / risky.
Will using /follow be dangerous?

There are ways gms can tell if you are boxing, but just in case, both of you should have /log on for entirety of your play so that you can "prove" you're not boxing by, say, simultaneous chat, etc.
Stay on the up and up, and welcome to the server to the both of you!

Playing is anything involving having a character logged in. If you have a character logged in doing absolutely nothing and log another character in, the moment you have two characters logged in you're boxing. At that point the GMs will hunt you down and make you do a bunch of crazy stuff like run in a figure eight while answering tells on both characters to make sure there are two people playing, and if you don't pass the test not even God can save you
/follow is fine, as long as there's actually a person. Like if you're hanging out with your wife and she goes downstairs to let the cat out for a couple minutes, the absolute worst case scenario you're looking at is a GM appears and you explain to them that your wife is downstairs afk for a minute, let me go get her, you go get her, you do the tests. It's not like an instant immediate ban the second they see someone afk.

If you're seen buffing the pair of you etc while she's afk, you're probably going to get a suspension :p
Don't risk it, if she afks... just stop everything til she's back.

I'll give you the same answer I give everyone else, OP - if you're legitimately playing by the rules and have only 1 person controlling each character at a time, you'll be fine. If you're just going to use this as an excuse to have a buff/port/pl box and get away with it, don't bother - you'll just end up getting banned.
Each Guide/GM has their own method of testing people - when I'm doing two-box tests, you won't know you're being tested until I'm finished, and if you pass you'll never know I was there. You might notice the mobs you're fighting acting a bit funny, but that would be it. And I'm not looking for how well your wife uses her mouse - I'm looking at her response to stimuli to make sure the two of you are both there.
Bottom line is if you're playing by the rules you'll be fine. If you're breaking them, you're going to have a bad time.

LOL, you wouldn't happen to be have been in the Qeynos cleric/saucer messing with NPC's the other night were you? I popped in there to drop off some rabid pelts and all the NPC's were fighting each other. I had to wait until they either killed themselves or stopped before I could continue on.

I'll never forget when I first started playing red. I was looking for people to xfer plat and I logged in my monk on blue and then my red toon shortly after forgot I had loggedin my monk and logged in an old friends wizard that had ip exempt. Tabbed back to red and went about my looking for plat. Tabbed to wizard and found them both sitting at gm in OT. Tldr; be careful don't get caught up with it I was afk on both toons for ~20 min and said gm knew it.

Thanks for taking the time to post and explain, Deru. This is actually very reassuring. I had thought it might be an automated process or log review etc that you had to appeal against which is why I was worried. I would rather not go ahead in that case, as being suspended would be more hassle than its worth. If its an actual human reviewing us while we play then I'm happy (if perhaps a little creeped out at being watched while I play with my wife ahaha)
I'm not looking for a buffbot or anything like that, but in in the off chance that wifey does have a lot of fun and her character gets levelled up I was wondering what the situation was for the sorts of things I spoke about. It would be quite natural for me to ask her to help me out with something quickly even if she didn't have time to sit down for a full game session. I was worried about it being caught up in an automated process.
It seems to be that there are no limits to our gameplay, so long as there are genuinely two humans involved at all times. Very happy with this and thanks ... now to convince her to actually give it a go, any tips on that?!

If randomly groups of fire giants and ice giants "port" home. Mid Vox raid you have a group of 5 ice giants (2 wizards and 3 warriors of course) and priest of Nagafen "port home" just after you finished clearing.
That'd be a pretty baller GM event. Simulated repop but the indoor dragons have a group of 6 mobs randomly spawn at a random percent in VS/Trak/Naggy/Vox rooms $$$.

If he has a separate computer logged in the gms won't come hunting him down. If you try to box on the same computer your ip is going to show the same computer name for both ips and then it'd pretty blatant and will likely get caught.

My wife never was a big EQ player really but she was willing to log in and keep me buffed up in between her games. She'd just alt tab out and it was never a big issue.
Well one day while doing this she went to the door to talk to a neighbor and a GM popped up and started asking us to run around him in circles and talk to him simultaneously. I had told him what was going on with the wife and I swear before I could get downstairs and get her back on the computer we had both received fuckin 30 day bans.
I would recommend that one person actually logs off if they are going to be AFK more than about 15 seconds, because I was unable to even get someone to look at a petition for 30 days.

Lol, I always think this. It's funny because people don't realize we sit around and watch until we see both characters move before appearing ;) We never just "show up" out of no where without observing first. But everyone is innocent, amirite? Just caught them at a bad time =P
Can't tell you how crazy it is when people stick to their stories despite being shown we know they are lying. I once told a guy that if he just came clean I'd let him off with a warning, and he still insisted he wasn't breaking any rules. A couple months later he apologized for lying and thanked me for the suspension

Myself and two friends just started on p99 and eventually we would like to plan on having a LAN party at one of our houses. Based on what I have read, one person operating two computers (two different IPs) is subject to ban hammer, however what of a LAN party? Should we contact the GM's prior to setting this up?

Sounds like you haven't read the rules yet. Also two computers from the same network would be connecting to the server with the same external IP address.

Unless I missed a post I believe I have read the rules...
2+ Boxing
Playing more than one character per server is not allowed and will be strictly enforced. The server will not allow you to log in with more than 1 account per public internet connection. Those attempting to do so will be met with an error message at the loginserver that states there has been a temporary IP block. If you legitimately have more than one real person playing from your connection, you may petition to be excluded from this limitation via an IP Exemption request in the petition forums. Please see the Support section of this guide for more information.
The server staff has many tools available at their disposal to root out people who violate this rule. Those caught will most likely be subject to a permanent ban (GM/Guide discretion).
To clarify I am not suggesting someone to use two computers from one IP address. I do understand the repercussions of doing this.
I do not see a post regarding setting up a LAN party. So my question remains. Should I contact a server rep prior to setting up a LAN? Also I do not find the "support" section from the quote I pasted. Maybe I missed something from that.
Thanks.

Setting up a LAN party is still going to have everyone using the same IP address. You will want to put in for IP exemptions for the accounts before you guys all get together because it might take a few days. If you didnt contact anyone before hand you wouldnt be able to play because everyone after the first person would get a IP block message when they tried to log on.

I really appreciate the responses. Time to start planning.
I think there was initial confusion because I was under the impression that when a computer connects to a router different IP's are generated but from the responses I received this isn't the case.

Well each device (PC, phone, router) has its own internal IP address on a network. That's different than your outward facing IP address, which is what anything you connect to on the internet sees.
