Recently asked my RL bro for a good introductory fantasy book series to read and he recommended the first 3 books of "Forgotten Realms". As I'm about to finish the 3rd book today, I was wondering if any of you nerds have some good recommendations next for me to read? Go on to the 4th book in the series or switch to something else? Let me hear it, poindexters.

Those first three are pretty good. I wouldn't read anything past them though.

Wheel of Time is good but super long.

I really like anything by Brian Sanderson.

Also, is WoT worth it? lots of fuckin pages, would take me probably a year lol

I've never wanted to read the Drizzt books because Drizzt is the stupidest fucking name for a fantasy character I've ever heard.

WOT series pretty good just long. The original author died and his wife got Brandon Sanderson to write the final 3 books.

I recommend it.

I have many concerns with even your ability to read a book, much less a series of books with 25000 total pages. Opinion rejected! Buzz off.

Sort of weird post-apocalyptic though, not actually fantasy fantasy of the game of thrones type

That movie was shit canned. One of the concept artists released a bunch of work that they were going to use if you want to see what it could've been though.

Haha dam, yeah it didn't sound too promising after a while heard the original movie version would have started in the second novel or something

Well, I like scifi movies like Dark City is one of the GOAT. I haven't read a scifi book since elementary school probably.

My bro mentioned reading
-The Stormlight Archive series
-and also Dark Force Rising series (star wars I guess) if I wanted to get out of high fantasy.

Must reads:

1. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
2. (ASoIF) Game of Thrones by George R R Martin

If you get done with these and like them I would recommend more. the 4 dark tower and Wheel of time books were good but... The two I listed above are 10X better.

all of the R.A. Salavatore books are worth reading.

The Forgotten Realms Dark Elf Trilogy is more than just Drizzt. One of the best things is that the author is not afraid to kill off main characters through out the story line. In the end everyone dies.

I'd continue on the drizzt line if you want to keep reading forgotten realms books.

Id also recommend the cycle of night series by Paul s. kemp if you're in the mood for something a little darker but still in the forgotten realms.

Avatar series is just ok but has good background for the rest of forgotten realms books

The first 6-9 forgotten realm books by R.A. Salvatore are enjoyable reads. He played EverQuest back in the day and the books / world has a very EQ feel to it.

The Dragonlance series mentioned is also pretty good. If you want that 'pure fantasy' feel they are both good choices.

If you're an avid or experienced reader then you may enjoy some of Guy Gavriel Kay's work more. He has several stand alone historical fiction-esq fantasy novels set in the same Universe and then a high fantasy series called "The Fionavar Tapestry".

Must reads:

1. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

This is an excellent suggestion and a fantastic book, but the series is a long way from finishing so I don't generally suggest it.

The Wheel of Time series I'm so conflicted on because while it is massive and an incredible universe, the Robert's writing is pretty frustrating especially for slower readers. I just think there are better options before tackling it.

The Name of the Wind is very good if you want a smartass'ier version of Harry Potter.

Then again Kvothe is a name almost as bad as Drizzt.

Stop naming your fantasy characters really dumb names, guys.

I AM THE PROTAGONIST, FKOXCUSSST.

I started Brandon Sanderson's "The Way of the Kings" last night and I made it like 10 pages but it just seems so overly verbose. And the hero was turning the rooms upside down and melting faces with his shardsword, so the fight scenes were annoying me.

I'm going to keep giving it a shot but if it stays this way I'm going to chuck it (no pun intended). Keep giving me some ideas, might check out dragonlance or w/e.

Chronicles of Amber is a great series.

Way Of Kings good book.. But yes verbose. Intro is rough because no context and a bit involved but gets better imo.

Name of the Wind is good book.. Wise mans fear was a letdown and dudes taking 4 yrs to write the third.

Chronicles of Amber is good shit, dated but cool and very concise. More a fantasy/modern mixup at first tho

Try some Joe Abercrombie mebbe? Has a good series can't recall the name, but Inspector Glokta was a very cool character

Avoid terry goodkind unless u want to lower ur iq.

Wheel of time is good if you like a big series but u can skip books 9-10 and improve the experience dude got a bit off at the end. Good tho overall and Sanderson finished strong.

I like Steven Erikson a lot but not for everyone. He's an anthropologist and his work reflects that.

Read all the drizzt back in my early teens or so, well was only 9 books then heh but they are very basic as far as writing goes. If you liked the homeland trilogy I would at least try the first crystal shard book, can always bail if it doesn't grab you. I always felt homeland/exile/sojourn were the best.

The book series that got me started on fantasy so many years ago was Raymond E Feist's Magician series. Over the years it exploded into 30ish books covering literally hundreds of years of the world of Midkemia. Pure fantasy at it's finest, in my mind.

I've read the first 20 something of the Salvatore books, they're good popcorn fantasy. Nothing deep, just easy reading.

Chronicles of Amber is definitely a good suggestion, I still have my giant all-in-one book of the series.

Wheel of Time are worth reading but definitely an undertaking.

I enjoyed David Eddings' series of books. The Belgariad, Malloreon, Elenium, and Tamuli series'. About 20 books there to read.

Song of Ice and Fire, of course.

Those books were awful I never understood the hype. The story/world was pretty decent but the main character was unbearable and eventually just served as a puppet for Terry to preach from.

I like Steven Erikson a lot but not for everyone. He's an anthropologist and his work reflects that.

Love his books. Very different style from most other fantasy, I found his world to be pretty dark (until I read Steel Remains..) but excellent.

The Cronicles of Amber books suck. The first set had some pretty horrible writing. I heard the second set was better though. After reading 4 books filled with shit I never read the second set so I couldn't tell ya.

Anyone suggest Mistborn yet?

Came here to mention this book, really great read just finished the second one last night.

That being said, it is a little long winded and boring if I'm being honest.

Here are some books more along the lines of RA salvator which if we are again being honest is more of a writer geared at teenagers than adults which makes them fun and easy reads.

Fantasy

The First Law: Right now this is at the top of my list for fantasy series. 3 books, a few different characters, adult writing and content without being over the top. You should stop what you are reading and pick these up. first one is "the blade itself"

Night Angel Series - Fun, reads almost like a comic book, really enjoyed.

Sci-Fi-

SnowCrash- Plain and simple one of the most iconic sci-fi/cyberpunk novels there is. I've read both this and neuromancer and I prefer SnowCrash though both are great.
Again, this book reads easy but is great.

Read these 7 books and come back to me.
