Hey all, just found out about this thing and am SUPER stoked. I was a fanatic in the day, but really thought the game lost it after Velious.
I've played most everything before, and enjoy it all. Mostly I'm curious how the server is populated right now? Is there a breakdown anywhere of how many of each race/class are being played? If not what's the general feeling on what's needed most? Too many, or not enough tradeskillers in any particular field? Help me to help you. 8-)
Looking forward to playing with you all. Peace.

There is a good dispersement of races/class and even levels. Play whatever you think you'll have the most fun playing.

Just like in old school EQ, if you roll a melee, you'll be group dependent. If you roll a caster or priest, you will have more options.
The reason a lot of people roll casters (especially pet casters) is because they can run around naked and still be dps incarnate, whereas most melee are going to suffer greatly until they get some decent gear.
There are tons of threads covering this in great detail, feel free to snoop around the server chat forum and take a gander :)

Without any funding and starting fresh all of the casters will work fine:
necro,mage,wiz,enchanter,druid,shaman,cleric
The rest take some plat to be really good. Out of those listed the ones that will be most wanted in groups would be the enchanter, cleric and shaman but seriously there are so many people playing that any class can find groups.
The classes listed that have the most being played right now would probably be druid, necro and mage because people get them 50 to farm for the characters they wanted to make in the first place.

True dat. I remember playing on live in a group with a lvl 40 war that had dual Fine steel. Melee without twink is like an old man without a cane.

It's 100% true, and very depressing when you actually read it in bold print.

But.. if you are *looking* for a challenge - Melee will not disappoint!
With Melee, you'll need to focus more on gearing up, than leveling. Sometimes the mentality is just 'level, level, level'.
Melee without a twink/farmer alt will do ok, but spend more time farming out good coin mobs, etc.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I remember.
I don't even know why I asked, I suffer alt-itis and will end up with a maxed list anyway. Though maybe once I get playing and realize it's not like modern eq with a merc, rushing from 1 to 40 in a day even untwinked, I'll actually pick a main and stick with it.
Thanks for the input all.
I'll start with the Ogre Warrior and no resources, just to appease my inner masochist.

well my friend I believe you may want to rethink and go the route of an untwinked troll SK if your masochistic side truly wishes to be appeased.

The first 8 levels should be like fighting a pack of wolves with a 12oz steak.
But at 9....

If you're just looking to have fun, roll a random warrior instead. There's a zillion Ogre Warriors out there, all ready for their shot at Main-Tanking NToV (sigh).
Go like Half Elf or Halfling or Gnome or Wood Elf or Dark Elf or something. There's so many hilarious warrior options if you are just looking to play casual.
Yeah you give up slam and frontal stun, but it won't matter for 99.9% of the content anyways, and hot-swapping a shield to ghetto bash is about the only think that keeps me awake in most raids/xp groups. I almost view it as a bonus.

Oooooh, CHALLENGE!!! ;)
I might start one of them too...right now I can't see to play for the tear in my eye from my wobbling compass and my sense heading of AWFUL! Oh EQ, how I've missed you.

Untwinked SK is no problem. Get a suit of banded and a silvery two handed axe (21/40) and you'll do just fine until you can group for better gear yourself. You can afford that by level 15 if you don't spend on anything else and level up where you make money (i.e not off of animals).

Yeah don't make a warrior. Nobody likes ghetto warriors.
If you insist on tanking make an SK. They're far better for your situation.

Just play whatever you want and if you go warrior, go halfling. They actually have pretty decent stats for it (compare them to a human warrior and you'll see) plus you have a very juice xp bonus! And furry feet.
