I agree with Hasbin about 2nd edition being awesome, but mostly for nostalgic reasons. Personally, I think 3.5E was the best ruleset and it is what I play maybe once a year or so when the old crew gets together. Once we started playing with a grid map and were able to obide by all the movement rules, DnD really took on a strategic feel.

Even before we played with a grid map, we followed the rulebook to the letter. Part of the fun of doing this was making compelling arguements to the DM about how the rules were written. We would sometimes spend an hour argueing about how one sentence was written in the PHB or DMG. The DM was always the last word on a ruling, but he would be willing to hear out your side before he made a decision.

I have played all core classes, but a wizard generalist is my favorite. A well played wizard can do things in DnD that will surprise not only the players, but the DM, too. Having a complete arcane spell list to pick from allows you to affect the game world in ways no other class can.

Got my start in AD&D 2nd ed. Played with 3/3.5, I still have all my 2nd and 3rd ed books. I also have a 1st ed DND monter manual written and illustrated by Gary Gygax (RIP)

i mostly always played a monk, tho last time i played i was a dwarven cleric who ended up with a pet mountain goat cause it saved it's life from our group necromancer. we never bothered with the grid map. what was the highest level you ever got a character to, starting from level 1?

Late to the party but starting to work my way back through the 3.5 stuff. Wish I'd started sooner, but better late than never.

MMO's have barely scratched the surface of what the D&D universe has to offer.

I think its like textbooks. The market is flooded, so you put out a new edition so people will have to purchase new books.

That being said, I played 2nd edition back in middle and high school, and I remember looking at the 3rd edition long after I stopped playing, and it looked retarded. Full-retard retarded.

Played/DMed all editions. I am usually the DM. Currently running a weekly 4e campaign going through my personal conversions of the 1st edition ToEE/Against the Giants/Queen of the Demonweb pits campaign arcs.

With prior editions I would leverage house rules a bit. So far with 4e haven't really needed to house rule much. Of course, playing via Fantasy Grounds with all participants remote, it tends to be easier to stick to the rules as written.

Favorite edition? The jury is still out on that. I have fond memories of 1st edition, and certainly have a strong liking for 1st edition modules. However, 2nd edition provided a strong cleanup to the game, and 3.5 edition allowed for some extremely interesting and custom character builds. 4e has a much stronger tactical aspect and provides more balanced parties and easier prep, which I like as a DM.

I prefer Paizo Games' Pathfinder system. It's a highly refined version of D&D 3.5 that excises a lot of the dumb shit from D&D. For example:

Grappling is easier to deal with.
Bards are useful.
The base classes are enticing enough to avoid prestige classes.
Caster classes are much easier to play.

And so on. It's basically D&D 3.5 that's been edited to remove unnecessary complication, things that don't make any sense and implement more logical choices/progression for classes and whatnot. I highly recommend it.

I was an old-school D&D player...started around 1975. Loved the table sessions we used to have...sometimes they'd go on for days, lol.

I eventually came to prefer Rolemaster (http://www.ironcrown.com/index.php?page=igames/IntroRM), though. Pretty tight game released by ICE.

Ran across something pretty interesting. It's an online hosting of tabletop games called:

SceneGrinder (http://www.scenegrinder.com/page/faq)

From the FAQ:

What games can SceneGrinder handle?

Dungeons and Dragons®, Advanced or otherwise, Hero System®, d20®, Pathfinder®, Risus, Microlite20... pretty much anything there's a template for. You can create your own templates or borrow and adapt templates from other members who published theirs.

Virtual tabletop games. Why didn't I think of that?

Played D&D from 2nd edition through to 4th. I'm not fond of 4th edition, as it feels like playing a computer game instead of a big open rpg with endless possibilities. I love 3.5 as it gives you so much room, but at the same time that same room can easily destroy the game. More characters than I wish to recall were simple game-ruiners, some designed by me whose effectiveness even surprised me.

I've dm'ed, I've played and I've done dungeon crawling with huge ass grids drawn out on maps and plastic boards and even with miniature walls, doors and other random dungeon crap. I also played with guys who didn't and honest to god, D&D without grid maps is less fun. I don't mind skipping mindless dungeon crawls and sticking to RPG and RP combat encounters, but from time to time a dungeoncrawl is cool as its a team effort. Just like with EQ :)

I'd love to try out Rolemaster though. My cousin has the Lord of the Ring books from way back and it all seems so overwhelmingly awesome.

Amen.

Started in the way back, prob. c1976, so that's first ed (though not the reaaaal way back). I do recall the "change" to Advanced D&D hitting sometime early in High School for me, that must have been about '80 or '81.

Personally fond of the 2nd Ed. ruleset, myself; I enjoyed both 3rd Ed and 3.5 Ed., but gave up trying to keep up on the game after that point. On the occasions when I do sometimes still play with the "old gang" we use the 3.5 Ed as a base.

Ran many a campaign as a DM, and played a Fighter & Druid as a part of a really epic campaign that took a group of us "nerd-buds" through the high school and college years - an common experience, no doubt ;) By the end of it all, we'd worked out a pretty involved set of "House Rules" that used the D&D rules as a base, incorporated the Arms Law/Claw Law/Spell Law ruleset from Iron Crown Enterprises, and then threw in a healthy dose of GURPS for flavor.

Truth be told, over the years, I think I've come to favor GURPS over all, for flexibility/customization reasons. But, in truth, I haven't tabletopped regularly for at least the last 10 years.

Didn't check out SceneGrinder yet. But it must be relatively new because some friends and I used to run games over the internet using some D&D program I can't remember the name of (think it was fairly popular so someone probably knows it). You could create grid maps and all kinds of cool stuff; in a way it was easier than doing it traditionally.

Haven't played a non-online game in years since everyone I knew who liked to play all moved to weird places. Like Canada. Fucking Canada.

It's all about AD&D 2nd Edition.

2.5 was so massive, it was virtually unplayable. Which is what I loved about it.

I'd spend days making a character, get too drunk while playing and forget all about it. That's the sum of my D&D experience - I'd rather make a character than play one.

We played v.2 & 3. Character sheets, lots of books, dice, some figurines. Hi I loved painting those precious little things and keep my blue dragon in my kitchen window still.

Hubby & I actually met on the way to a D&D game :D Mutual friend of ours picked me up then swung by to get him. He looked over his shoulder with a speculative gleam in his eye and he's been my DM ever since, lol. I'm the only cleric I know of that had a pet shoulder dragon :D

I played a healer of course. Our parties varied in size from 4 to 12 people depending on who wanted to party. We had a friend who didn't play but was our bard and would sit in the background playing his guitar, lol. Another friend (RIP) who had a little man's complex, he always played a guy who's ride was an ogre and did the most outrageous chit creating more adventure on his own we could often handle.

I learned quickly don't ask for wishes, you'd get them instantly, behind every bush! But wording those wishes took FOREVER and he'd fork us every time. Fireballs in dungeons are bad. Approach water with caution. Stealing dice and lighters was acceptable. Leaving the table setup to play for weeks was the norm.

We've still got our books & dice tho we haven't played in years now, everyone scattered to the winds over the years. I miss the fun and companionship of those house parties, we had a blast.

Great thread!

Of course, it was really about collecting stacks of books and bags of dice. I kept mine (dozens of them, of course) in an old Crown Royal bag, and it's still kicking around the house, somewhere.

And maps - definitely all about the maps. A friend of mine (the DM in my playing adventures) had a mad talent for cartography, and was hand drawing professional caliber stuff for years.

Ahh, I'm getting all warm and glowwy - although that could be the expresso.

Something I noticed about D&D today is that it's marketed much the same way a lot of MMO's are: Easy Mode.

A lot of people stray away from the custom route. I miss the DM's who would build entire worlds behind their campaigns.

/agree. On a lot of our campaigns only the casters had magic, we may find some small items on the way but generally they were one shot kinda things and even then it wasn't easy figuring out what (if anything) they DID do. No such thing as an identity spell :P So use at your own risk. Might blow up something! Might make the weeds grow and strangle you! More often than not it was a minor cantrip of some sort.

1st Edition AD&D all the way. Gygax was the shit!

I had Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide (with the pic of the Party attacking the Efreeti Lord), Monster Manual 1, Fiend Folio, Monster Manual 2, and Dieties & Demigods. In fact, I THINK I still have them, somewhere.

I played some 3rd and 3.5 edition more recently, but it was never the same as the old days. When I go home for the weekend, I'll have to dig around, and see if I can't find my books, and some of my old miniatures.
