If it's EQ, my main's a dwarven paladin. That's just the way it is.
Alts, yada yada...
The question: Is PvP just a nightmare for any gear-dependent class?
I don't mean to ask "does such and such a class pwn"? What I want to know is that if I'm playing and see another character, do I pretty much know I'm toast if they're in the same level vicinity?
I can't stop thinking of EQ PvP as anything more than "people that CAN kill you WILL kill you"... I had one, shitty experience on a PvP server during live. I got corpse camped upon dropping in as a L1 DWF PAL and thought "Well fuck this."
Some of the blue stalwarts here on the Forums who switched have tempted me in my blue boredom for a new pill. There's only so much you can do in four years as a pure duo (wife and I) and not get bored with it, and we've zero interest in pushing and elbowing into the raid scene...
I guess the real question is: Is it even worth it to try a paladin on Project 1999 Red? (I'm not asking is it loleasy, just asking if a person that's easily frustrated by the accidental mean-ness of humans should be entering a world where he's done nothing more than give others even MORE tools to grief...
Sell P99 Red to a DWF PAL.

I just came to Red 99 after installing the game again, I am gonna be honest I have met some super awesome people over here and I didn't have to look for them, they came to me. The PvP aspect comes in fighting for camp and/or zone control with your friends or guild.
Search out Lemonjelly on Red99 in a guild called Uprising, they take in all new comers and theres always plenty of folks xping you can hang with.
1. I first created my Enchanter, a Halfing Druid was in Neriak and PMed me stating come to waterfall. So I went he gave me 25p and buffed me out of the blue.
2. I was approached by a High Level Enchanter who pretty much forced a new robe and belt on me lol and buffed me. She buffs me everytime she is in my area,
3. Found a buyer for my bone chips and he paid me double and would not let me take less.
Don't let the PvP part of the name run you off. This is an awesome server and if more people know how awesome it was there would be triple the population. You are going to find pricks on Red99, Hell you have pricks on Blue99. Come on over and enjoy the server and don't get flustered. Plus Red99 has the most entertaining ooc chat in any game lol

I'd turn off ooc or put it in a minimized window for the first couple of weeks.
Paladins are good, they'll drag a pvp fight out for a long time...you'll need to get good at "jousting" as with any melee.
SKs are probably more favored for their HT but you'll enjoy it. Short races are always a good idea as you're harder to click in a crowd or whatever if you're constantly running back and forth through ogres/trolls etc.
Give it a try, if you get some plat together I'll make you some starter JC'd items up at cost including some +7 MR bracers :)

There are people in the server who play it like a FFA first person shooter, but they are a minority. That said its important to be aware if who is in your zone at all times. Many players bind /who to movement key. Make friends and form groups, that way people have your back in pvp and you are nt auto kos. If trying to level fire a tell to guy in range in your zone ask him to group before pvp happens. Just watch your back if he ignores that tell. Corpse camping is not tolerated by serer staff. If you call lns in ooc they must let you loot, but you are bound to leave the area.
Gear dependent classes have it a bit rough( burin wouldn't say any more so than blue), but similar to blue decent weapons are abundant in kunark and can be found cheap or even free. Melee are actually fairly well equipped on the server for pvp as hit rate is pretty absurd.

I recently started on Red myself, coming from blue.
I don't regret it, not one bit. Cant even bring myself to log in to blue anymore.
More open spawns, the people are amazingly friendly (you'll meet some enemies for sure too)
I've been playing here for a few weeks and have been approached out of the blue and handed gear more times than I remember. Pretty cool.
I would say the majority of the server is interested in growth and will help out newbies.
Of course there are the dbags, too.

You're looking at it in the wrong way. The vast majority of people don't play FPS games because they want to hear the lamentations of their opponents' women; they play for the fun of FPS action. Some shit talking and gloating goes hand-in-hand with winning, and some disappointment goes hand-in-hand with losing, but if you play much at all you will inevitably be on both ends of that.
It's the same with red... except with the 5-10% of the population who really are there just to cause grief for other people.

Back in the day when I played live pvp (99% on Vallon Zek), I always liked survivability more than just getting kill shots. Them paladins can take a lickin. I loved those fights where you were way outnumbered by a gank squad but still managed to fight them off/escape. World pvp isn't an arena, sometimes staying alive is as important as taking someone out (esp when you're bound half a continent away).

The big difference between red and blue:
IMO Blue is about 80% casual, 20% hardcore players, and 1% RNF style griefers. (I know this adds up to 101%).
When I played on Red for a few months, it was about 5% casual, 75% hardcore, and 20% RNF style griefers.
With the new XP bonus its probably normalized a bit but the point remains: Red is not a casual server. It's serious business (well for the people who play on it anyway).

I am not sure why so many people still play on blue. There is more loot, less competition, more exp, and less pvp on red than on the blue server.
Seems like a no-brainer to me.

The only EQ PVP servers I have ever played on have been Sullon Zek and Zek. Red99 does not compare to either of these servers (or other live PVP servers I imagine) for a wealth of reasons. The two biggest of which are: the massive exp bonus, and the distinct lack of PVP.
AFK for pizza is definitely a piece of utility I hadn't previously considered and in that way you have discovered (and revealed to me) one of the perks of playing on the blue server. A lot of the people I have met playing games like this have been largely loot motivated, regardless of whether the server was PVE or PVP. For players who are largely loot-driven (very common in players of MMOs/RPGs) the red server offers a sickening level of loot saturation on a per-player basis that is quite easily acquirable... at least relative to the blue server here. I say this both because of the insane EXP bonus on red which empowers newcomers to blitz to 60, and because there is essentially only one raiding guild on the server.
No idea how many guilds currently compete for raid targets on the blue server here (since I've never played there), but I have to imagine that one guild has not taken 90-100% of the end-game bosses week after week for the majority of the server's history. This is what I am more specifically referring to when I use the term "loot saturation."
But the pizza point was a really good one, something that didn't even cross my mind when I was comparing the two servers.

I am not totally knocking Red. A lot depends what age you are when you play it. I am nearing the end of my life. I don't plan on dying tomorrow but I could. It is just I look back on it and I have made some, very more than a few, peoples life not miserable but unhappy. And I am not talking EQ, I am talking real life. To me the whole world seems to be tons more violent than when I was a kid. Not goofy enough to know bad stuff did not go on then, but, I just can't stand nasty people anymore. God, life is hard enough, without some bastard busting your balls everyday. Just don't be the Bastard is all I am saying. Nothing to brag about now or years later in your life.

I created Lagaidh yet again and set out to see what it was like.
The first few days were okay. I met folks had small groups. But then, just like blue, you begin running into people who are in a hurry to the top and you find yourself a target simply for your take-it-easy approach. I kiiiinda sorta figured that's how it would be and it looks like a blast for folks that like the different layer.
And given a few days among ye, I'd really enjoy it if you red folks could just boil it down to "because we like fighting people". That's what it is. Nothing more. Nothing less. And damn it that's cool enough =) I'm glad they made the server for pvpers. Over time maybe more folks from the old pvp servers will hear about it and thicken up the population.
I'm going to have to agree with other blue folks who say if one is really bored on blue, then red may not necessarily be the answer. It turns out the same things I've always hated about pvp are fairly classically represented here =)

06-16-2014, 08:45 PM
For me, the main problems with Red are:
Not enough people playing . . . so many dead zones
1 guild on server dominates everything
I started a new character on Red and was surprised how good the community has been. Haven't been PK'd once at low levels and had a nice druid port me to a better location. I've been unable to make lasting friends etc though, because there's hardly anyone playing in my level range. It's just a population issue mainly. Be fun if people I knew played. As of right now I just can't get myself to log in.
Lagaidh
06-16-2014, 09:16 PM
Actually I wasn't as bored with blue per se, I think I glommed onto that notion from another poster. The forums, over time, had given me pause to think about my old assumptions when some stalwart blue folks decided to test PvP.
That made me curious enough that I decided I'd have a look. Must be somethin' to it right? Bob's there. I truly see the other side of the coin now, whereas before, I thought it was solely about e-peen. So hell, my stint on red moved my knowledge and that's a good thing.
I'm sure I'll log on time to time and give the odd caster a target that can get to the zone instead of provide a low, medium or high quality dwarf pelt for the effort.
I'll be like the sympathy-fuck date on which to practice.

I think this is a fundamental problem with Red, actually. Having only one competitive guild on the server makes it feel actually less challenging than Blue. PVP is one aspect of Red, but PVE is still there as well and a big draw to people wanting more challenging content. If I wanted PVP only I'd play Call of Duty, not EQ Red . . .
So yeah . . . soon as players join the only competitive guild on Red they are instantly granted all end game content? They don't even have to get to 60 or make any effort at all? I wouldn't be advertising this so openly if I were you. The whole reason I tried out Red was to see if I could be challenged a bit more, not less.

With all due respect...there is nothing difficult about Blue's FTE Jav Spam raiding.
I do enjoy the raids that we get attacked on a lot more however. Even the raids that are not contested still will have some pvp. Either clearing out people between us and the target or dealing with people trying to take out our stragglers.
Red is vastly more entertaining than Blue high end. No waiting list for camps so you can farm what you want when you want. Don't have to fte poop sock for targets, if its contested you fight for the merb, if not you kill it and move on to the next. And if you are bored and max level you can actually do something besides roll an alt or farm for cash...go hunt people.
Also, getting a VP key on red isn't exactly zero effort. PS and RS are two of the hottest pvp spots outside of KC, you will be constantly hunted while trying to camp those stupidly rare spawns.

Yep. It really shits up the server when everybody is in the same guild. This is why they are called the bluebie zerg of the box. And I will never join them because I prefer to he a part of the solution and not the problem. But it seems like only 20% of the server feel this way. Some ppl got 0 dignity. really shits up the server when one of the end game guild options is full of selfish faggots that deter anyone from joining them, thus creating the landslide of applicants
on red99 50+ u cannot exp without a guild tag, or without friends... so you have to look at the available 50+ guild tags and make a choice
one will act confused that you arent already level 60 best in slot and know how to do everything without being told, and will expect you to two box yourself if you want to port anywhere
the other one will caress you gently, offer exp groups around the clock, kill dragons, and help you progress on your epic and other character building activities

Thanks for the due respect. I never said blue was a very challenging server . . . the reason I've been trying Red is because I seek more challenge.
While Blue may not be very challenging regarding normal camps, you have to admit that it's still far more challenging in Raids and end game. You can't possibly argue that Red, with only 1 guild dominating all raid content with no competition, is comparable to Blue, which has many capable guilds competing for content. Even with the rotation in place, it's a sad comparison.
Regardless of all that, my main point originally was that Red players probably shouldn't be advertising how "easy" Red is on the Blue forum. That was all I was saying. It's not going to persuade anyone to come over.

VP is always hot for pvp on repop. A lot of pvp is done between monks and bards jav'ing invis and FDs trying to train racnors gwurms ect on each other

I will happily defend red because in opinion it is much more fun than blue. If you disagree with my opinions that's fine. In the past i've disagreed with the vast majority of your posts and opinions as most were misinformation and incorrect. But, being the nice guy I am, if i don't have something constructive to say I usually say nothing. I guess red is a bad influence on me after all =)
You also quoted one of the loudest and most outspoken people on the box. Not exactly your average red player.
U coming @ me?

Will red ever get fixed to be more classic?
Removal of global OOC, removal of PvP text, removal of group EXP bonus, fixed item cast times and recharging?
Cause it doesn't feel very classic over there. Feels too custom to be killing some gators in Inny Swamp then see someone PvPs some other dude in VP, followed by 20 people, not in your zone, saying PRAS.
It feels like a different game when all that is going on. Not classic enough for me :(.

You can NOT defend Red because as we have seen, what the server is like a 1 1/2 half years old and there is like 80 people on it, if you don't count the 2 Boxing cheating Bastards on it. It sucks or it would have 500 people on it. So I really don't much care what you think about my posts because I THINK you sort of fit in on there. I will admit I am probably not good enough to be the TMO guild leader, to lazy to do the work involved, but I sure as hell know this game trust me, and what it takes to make it happen or not classes wise. Am I the best player on here no, but please don't call me clueless. And I do respect you work wise and on here.
