Avast is blocking eqgame.exe, I had this same problem. You can add EQgame.exe to the exceptions on avast or just uninstall avast (which is what i did)

After uninstalling avast, you need to reinstall EQ. Or find another way to get eqgame.exe back into your directory (I did this by having a backup on a portable hard drive)

Try making another shortcut of EQgame.exe and make sure it has the "patch me" added in.

Its one of the final steps on the "getting started" guide. You make a shortcut on EQgame.exe , right click the shortcut hit properties , and in the box labeled target it should read : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\EverQuest\eqgame.exe" patchme

(or something similar, depending on where your EQ directory is)
