Been a long time since i've played this style of EQ. I started last night and i'm currently level 8. I chose wizard and i'm looking for a zone or linear zones to progress through, any suggestions would be helpful as it seems like I don't have enough mana to kill dark blues at the moment if I get a resist.

From what I hear, wizards are tough to start and it never really gets much easier, besides quad kiting, or getting a ton of gear. In groups wizards are most known for blowing up a few pulls and then afking until they get full mana, rinse and repeat. Solo, like you said, it might take you all your mana to kill a single DB mob. Not saying wizards don't have a purpose, with their ports and boom boom spells, its just hard to get going.

Wizards are one of the most dull and one-dimensional characters in the game. They become OK soloers once they can quad kite (around level 30; can check the wiki to see when you get the relevant spells) and are never all that amazing in a group. Before they can quad kite, they are pretty awful soloers. In raids, wizards are useful, although even then, their DPS against bosses comes with a lot of caveats (it can be hard or impossible to manage aggro, and resists, even using lures, can be an issue; rogues often outdo wizards here, which is funny because wizards are supposedly specialists in taking out raid bosses). I'd say reroll a different class unless you're really committed to a wizard.

This guide has some good info on what the different classes are and how to choose which one is right for you: http://wiki.project1999.com/Players:Newbie

I started agnostic human and turned in bone chips at level 4 in kaladim.

Probably just going to swap enchanter though, I want to be able to solo which I can on an enchanter even if it's not super fast, and still very useful in groups.

To piggy-back on the wizard convo, I played a Wiz main from 19 April of 1999 to early 2005 and the comments above are true to a point. Don't expect a lot of groups. The Boom boom, AFK med, repeat is pretty accurate until Luclin, (which I doubt we'll see on this server). As for raiding, pre-Luclin raiding is also accurately depicted. You will find yourself stopping DPS to lower threat with even the best of tanks if you are equivalently geared. Ancient Greater Concussion and Tank AA's were the equalizer there.

That's what I assumed, I actually went wizard because it was the first level 50 on my original EQ server and figured there had to be a reason. But I suppose at that point no one was min/maxing etc. yet.

Steamfont Mountains by the windmills is a good place until 12. From 12-15 do the 4 minotaur spawn by the Lfay zone line, decent XP and coin for the level. Never had a problem getting a single spawn and they will spawn as fast as mana permits you to kill them. After Nybright sisters if you can get it. I can't seem to get it so I'm soloing rock dervishes and lava crawlers in Lavastorm.

This is the best place to go: BlackBurrow for gnoll fangs, until you are in your teens then go to WK to kill bandits and collect their sash's, turn them in to the paly guild in qeynos. Youll get enough money to keep yourself moving forward without worry from the bandits bronze drops/sash rewards. Its the best place to get started on p99 IMO

Proper chanter soloing is probably the 2nd fastest solo exp in the game only next to Bards.

Ya, I actually decided on mage. My true love in ranger, but I wanted something I can use to get him whatever he needs as I level. So that's that, enchanter is very nice as well though. The charm feels like the true pre-nerf charm where it's a set minimum duration instead of a fully random break. Not sure if that's the case. But I did eventually go with mage, I can solo pretty much all level brackets and wanted the ability to still help in groups and be able to farm whatever I want for the ranger.

Also with a pregnant wife and random hours it's better to be able to stand up whenever I need and not worry about charm breaking.
