Without him EQ wouldn't of been made so maybe he was a douchebag at times but gotta give him some credit for pushing to get this game made.

verant was a part of 989 studios. 989 studios used to be called Sony Interactive Studios. hence verant has always been a part of sony. no sony, no verant, no 989, no sony interactive studios, no eq.

"Headquartered in San Diego, California, Verant Interactive was a game development studio primarily focused on the production of online games. The company is best known for the MMORPG EverQuest. Verant was formed as a development venture inside Sony (and its interactive/online production arm, Sony Interactive Studios), and was spun off as its own design team shortly after the release of EverQuest. The team still always kept itself closely aligned with the operating entity that became Sony Online Entertainment, and was acquired by the company in June of 2000. The developer became fully absorbed into SOE as its core internal design studio and now no longer operates under its original name."

There is a lot of Smed and McQuaid hate out there, but there wouldn't have been an EQ without them. If Smed did anything wrong it was to listen too much to players wanting life to be easier... So many voices saying they wanted this and that... It made present day EQ nothing close to the challenge of the original.

You won't see me throw him a parade, but I never had so much of a problem with Smed. The one who really ought to burn in hell, though, is that fuck Gordon Wrinn (Abashi). I never had any runs in with him personally, but just reading what that fuckstick had to say to and about the playerbase was nothing short of appalling.

It's one thing to have a difference of opinion about the direction of a game, design choices, etc. It's entirely another to be an openly hostile complete and total fuckwad to the entire playerbase of a game that pays your salary collectively and individually. Sony SAYS they got rid of the original forums because they didn't like the tone of what was going on there. Personally, I think it's because they didn't want there to be a record of what a complete and total fuckhead their community relations person was.

I have no idea if he was, but I sincerely hope that asshole was one of those people who got fired in the parking lot in Carlsbad when VG went south. And I hope it SUCKED.
