Hi P99,

This is my first post on the p99 forums. Just found out about project 1999, catching on a little late but better late than never. I have played a bunch of MMOs from EQ1 and 2 to WoW and more. The best experience I had on an MMO in the past was EQ (as far as depth of gameplay, difficulty, community, etc..) way back in 2001 or 2002, and I was looking for some nostalgia some months back. This led me back to EQ1 (P2P version) which I played for about 3 months before getting tired of grinding out dailies every day and never being able to find groups, and immersion breaking factors such as defiant gear.

Got to level 90 with my BST and DRU box and just felt worn out of the same zones and sparce population. After looking through tons of new MMOs, I came to the realization that very few next gen or last gen games have what I am looking for. Ended up coming across P1999 and want to roll a toon now.

Anyways, last night I made a DE wizzie and got DESTROYED by a wolf right in nektulos. Right here was where I remembered a few things about the original EQ : Crippling difficulty (finally a challenge from an MMO) and how much has changed from the EQ I have been playing for the past few months (current EQ) and the original release, AND how much I miss the way it used to be.

Since I died and lost all my gear/bags and everything then logged out for the night, I am planning on re-rolling a new toon. And before I do, I have some questions for anyone who cares to answer them:

What is a good starter class/race (open to anything, but not much for gear requirements, solo capability if necessary when I can't find groups)?

Any tips or suggestions that seasoned players have?

Does anyone want to roll a new toon to level with me since boxing is not an option? I plan to be on for a few hours every night, sometimes more.

I am planning to make a toon on blue server, then maybe one on red later once I have more knowledge of how classic EQ works.

Sorry for the wall of text, I hope you made it through it without a headache

What's your in-game name? Next time in Nektulos I'll try to help you out.

Decided to roll an Iksar warrior instead of the Wiz. Picked Iksar for the AC bonus and field of bone is a nice area. The toon's name is Allant.

Allant, I just rolled an Iksar Monk. Probably not the best combo around, but I'd be happy to group up sometime. In game name is Vanesh.

What sort of hours do you keep?

welcome Allant!

There is always a nice group of friendly people in FoB and later in Kurns.

I'm a 13 shaman and when I get on tonight I will track you down and help with some buffs and whatever curscale armor or rhinohide armor I may have in my bags!

You will soon be missing hours of sleep and coming back for more, like only EQ can do!

Welcome Allant! I have a 22 Bard in OT currently named Seitil and while its my only character I would be more than happy to help if you need anything and I am online. FoB is one of the best starting areas and you can really level all the way up on Kunark if you want (I did on live with my Iksar Shaman back in the day) Good travels!

Thanks for all the support and encouragement guys. The EQ classic community has always been so helpful. I will PM you guys tonight when I get on.

Decided on an Iksar warrior, made it to level 3 last night grinding outside the cabilis ent.

Still open to a duo partner or group. If anyone is interested :).

I like the warrior so far, but heard monks tank just as well? Does this hold true in the later levels? Id hate to level my warrior up, only to have sub-par tanking capabilities. Also, are warriors wanted by groups frequently?

I have a 49 Iksar Warrior. My play time leaves much to be desired so I may not be a good example but I'll share my 2 copper pieces. Grouping up was mostly what made it fun (dont be afraid to send /tells to ppl to group up.) Find some others in your lvl range & coordinate your play times together if you get erratic play times like some.
From what I was told by other higher lvl people was that warriors are needed for raids and life is rough until 50s when the disciplines come into use.

Warriors are by far the best tanks end-game. However, early they suffer due to lack of aggro holding capabilities. Once they get to a high enough level that weapons proc for them they can tank well though. Paladins and Shadowknights outperform them for many levels though.

Warriors are probably tied with Rogues for being the hardest class to start out with. You are incredibly gear dependent and with almost no means of soloing past your late teens / early 20s.

That said, play what you want to play. Personally I'd recommend something that can at least solo half decently and is not totally gear dependent but that's just me. You'll be fine if you have long stretches of time you can devote to grouping.

Allant!

I sent you tells and sat and hailed and buffed you last night!

I will assume you were AFK like a boss so my feelings aren't hurt. :(

I should have a set of rhino hide for your if you are still not in gear, saw you had a nice rusty and iksar shield!

I'll look for you again tonight.

Yeah I am big on grouping. That's what made the original game so fun, a combination of the difficulty and constant grouping. Good advice.. I will be actively looking for groups. Right now grouping is a little hard to find at lvl 4, but as soon as it is viable I will be grouping as much as possible.

Are there any good agro weapons or items I can get my hands on Pre-lvl 50-60?

I don't mind being a little weaker than Paladins and SKs for a while, as long as it isn't forever hehe. To be honest, I love playing warriors so I am totally willing to suffer through the levels to get to that end game beast mode-tank status.

The problem is that I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to grouping.. it could be a few hours or more per night. But I am actively looking for someone to duo with, which alleviate my lack of soloing capability post level 20 and 30 :D

Sorry Sorock!! I did see that you send me tells and appreciate you coming out to help. Unfortunately I was AFK pretty much all night. Ended up getting on late and saw your msg, tried to msg back but it was too late hehe:). I will be getting on tonight for sure and will message you then.

I think it is around lvl 37 that weapons begin to proc, such as the ones with the Ykeshka (sp?) proc.

Just hit lvl 6 and still going to continue on with the warrior. Even if it's a challenge to get to 50. Got some banded gear so far and a sheild and weapon dropped from skeles. So far so good!
