Never played this one myself but an interesting article on Meridian 59...

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/elements/2014/05/the-last-survivors-of-meridian-59.html?mobify=0

I think my favorite line from the article is "We grew up on games where losing meant ‘game over.’".

Actually just about all of <Force> in it's early stages were former Meridian players.

You'd probably like it there, 20 players max and you can take their items after you slay them.

just past that quote is this one

Just like in real life, we felt that some level of risk makes things more exciting. If there were nothing at stake, combat would be meaningless

So that's why brobb thinks eq = irl

So I want to be a Hero

I gave it a shot could not get past the mummies, in the tutorial . It reminds me of doom. Meridian 59 has 2 official servers 101, 102 and a private server 103. On 101 there was 18-20 people,on 102 3 people. I have no idea about 103. I played around 8pm mountain standard time.

i tried UO last night for the first time. man i hate to judge a game by its graphics but it was awful. gonna try one more time before saying NAW.

UO in the classic era was the best game ever created. I was Dread Lord Kergan, Apprentice Alchemist within 2 hours of starting there massacring newbie miners with a harm wand. The griefing capabilities built into that game were endless. Selling runes to Brit bank that actually went to Hythloth level 4, selling full spellbooks that were actually empty, selling bread that was deadly poisoned...oh the memories.

i like sandbox games but i literally had no idea what to do. also moving around was really awkward. i couldnt find any mobs or players to attack. also it only let me pick warrior, mage, and blacksmith as my starting classes.

Kergan

If they let you pick a starting class something is fucked! No classes in that game at all. You can pick whatever skills you want and level them up by using them. You can only get a certain amount of skill points though, enough to max out 7 skills. Or at least that way it was.

It's basically the same controls as Diablo with the whole clicking to move thing though, shouldn't be that far off.

For low level killing of mobs usually there are graveyards around the towns that have a fast respawn rate of pretty easy shit.

hmm maybe i didnt pick a class because i had no skills. thought i was a warrior because i was wearing a brown robe or some shit. i played on some shard called redemption, it think its supposed to be classic. i just wanna see what all the grief hype is about.

I think you can pick some sort of template to start where you get a handful of skills at like 20. There are training dummies you can beat on to get your skill up to a minimal level (like 40 I think). Getting magic skill up is expensive and you're better off just getting enough in it to heal yourself, all spells use reagents that you have to carry around (full item loot non consensual pvp so you'll get ganked...a lot).
