View Full Version : Surrogate Games?

I got burnt on both WoW and P99 over the past month or so and I started loading up older games.. and loaded up things that I have forgotten I have done.
I used Morrowind, Oblivion, Etrian Odyssey games as surrogate EverQuests. My characters looks, names, major and minor skills and classes. Anyone else do this or was I that badly addicted way back when?

I used to import screenshots of my EQ guys into Baldur's Gate 1/2 for custom portraits when my EQ accounts would be banned (or inactive when mom would cut off the credit card billing).

Baldur's Gate was a game I always wished I'd got into. I did try it a few times but it wasn't as fun as EQ.
Not quite connected but look up "Dungeon Keeper" (and DK2), tons of fun to be had.

They have that new 'Neverwinter' game based on D&D's Forgotten Realms.
Free to play, decent graphics, pretty cool gameplay.

Darklands. Period.
It's my p92 when p99 wears on me.
Darklands is one of the most imaginative, well-written, underrated, and underplayed RPG games of all time. It kind of plays off of the style of old choose-your-own-adventure books, with a semi-RTS combat engine that allows you to pause the battlefield at any moment and issue new orders to your party members.
Once you can figure out how to survive beyond the first encounter, it's addicting and it draws me in about once every year for another go!
Here's a gog link so you can check it out (it's only 6 bucks!): http://www.gog.com/game/darklands

I've been playing diablow2 - hit me up if you wanna join up. Glitter and I are almost through normal.
Darklands is a neat game. Lots of fun to be had. Then, when you think you're done, start hacking save files to try fun stuff.

I don't know how you can have enough time to play more than just p99. I barely have time for that.

You can even get "enhanced" versions of BG and BG2 on Steam. It's nice to not have your eyes bleed on a 30" monitor.

When I bought my first copy of EQ in April 99 I also purchased Baldurs Gate and Alpha Centauri. Got so hooked on those two games I hardly touched EQ till about June. Late 98-99 was a great period of gaming. Half-life was released around then as well.

My fallback when I couldn't pay for EQ was either Diablo (1 and 2), Starcraft, or Lord of the Realm 2.

Great game from 98, free to download at this link. One of the developers who worked on the game keeps updating it, and runs great on windows 8 and pretty sure most platforms.

Wow Betrayal in Antara - now THAT is a throwback for me.
I remember playing that game when it came for free with some other game. From Sierra, right?
Completely forgot about that one.

The most nostalgic gaming I can get into are adventure games. I have replayed Monkey Island 1-3 so many times I lost count, and with all the indie adventure games coming out on steam and the rereleases of classic adventure games like indiana jones or the MI remakes i have several years worth of adventure gaming stockpiled.

I have to say any RPG classics always draw me back. Just to name a few:
SNES Games:
Lufia 1 & 2
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI
Playstation Games:
Final Fantasy VII and VIII (Hated IX even though I beat it)
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon
Legend of Mana
Darkstone
And if you have never played the "Legend" games and are wondering... No, they are not all part of the same series. They are all completely different games.

The Secret of Mana and Seventh Saga are SNES favorites of mine. Don't forget Breath of Fire.
My all-time favorite is Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. N64 actually had a pretty decent go with Ogre Battle 64:Person of Lordly Calibur. I still have a mid-campaign save that I play on every time and again.

The 7th Saga, no other game for the SNES caused me more anger... and probably not since then. Game fucking over if Valsu got a Rune

warcraft 3. ive actually recently loaded it up but i gota figure out how to bypass all of the boring starter missions.
i used to play the online arena/gladiator games, but the only ones that are hosted anymore are boring and linear. seems like people dont make new maps for this game, and i really dont know how.
the single player campaign has some fun missions once you get past the first 10 or so levels.

Holy shit I loved one and two. Back in highschool I played through 1 and 2 with my friends mom while we smoked weed. Amazing times.

HOMM 3 complete ;)
every 6 month I have HOMM urge, where I start up a random huge map and play for Castle, Rampart, Tower, Dungeon and Necropolis. Other towns I don't like so much ;)
I also regularly replay random maps of Master of Orion 2 and Civ 4
If only I could get original Medieval Total War to run on new PCs =(
But heck I got Lords of the Realm 2! ;)

I generally play BG through BG2 TOB twice a year or so. After completing all three games about 7 times I discovered the amazing world of mods and have played through the games to a total of 24 times, each time with a different set of companion mods, class mods, and quest mods. They still release some new stuff for the game every now and then. Shit I think I'm gonna load it up now.
