Mage pet question

Is the 49 earth pet better than the 51 earth pet? Was duoing in the hole earlier today at 50 and everything was going great. Got 51 loaded up my new pet and it felt like my new pet was doing less damage and was taking more damage. The 49 pet I summoned was hitting for 54 and the 51 pet I summoned was hitting for 54. The 49 pet did have the shovel focus but I was under the impression that all the shovel did was increase the pets hp.

The 51 pet does more damage, is 4 levels higher, root does damage, and has more HP (though, the 49 pet has significantly less if you are using a focus).

I always reclaim until I get a pet who hits for max dmg then keep him haste him and so fourth.

Its a close call between a focused 49 pet and unfocused 51 (when comparing max pets, theres a 5 level range they can summon). 51 can be higher level, so it'll hit higher mobs a bit better, resist a bit better. But it's also 300 mana compared to 200 for 49 earth. If you need to chain on most mobs the 49 will be more efficient. If you're making one pet and keeping him summon a 51 until you get maxxed level.
