I am COMPLETELY new to everquest. I was wondering what would be a good class to start out with?

I don't know. I'm sitting at the character creation screen right now trying to decide.

I think I'm going to start with a Barb Shaman.

It would help to have a little bit of back ground on your game history. If you're from new age MMOs like WoW, LOTRO, SWTOR, etc I honestly think you'd find most classes on EQ boring. Most are either very automated or clicking one button every 20 seconds.

Personally, I play a bard. We're always active to the point of hysteria not to mention they are one of the more powerful classes to play.

I always advise Ranger as starting learning class. You get to learn both, melee and casting later on. Its not a terribly powerful class, but its cool in its own way ;)
I recommend Wood Elf for a race.
I would avoid evil races/classes for starters cause it will heavily impede your ability to travel to other cities until you more familiar with the game.

Alternatively, Barbarian Shaman is a nice starting option imho.

Yeah, honestly the best advice is what was linked earlier, there is a wealth of information on the forums and the wiki. I find myself reading for hours and that provides a much better gaming experience when I am online. There is so much little stuff that we take for granted that a new player will be completely lost with, and I still learn new things everyday in game from helpful people!

Like, is a shaman, heal with inner fire and not your healing spells until like your teens or something! more heal for your mana!

Amieko, what did you decide to make?

Go for enchater, best class ever for groups and can also solo.

Necromancer
Druid
Magician
Shaman
Enchanter
Cleric

In loose order of easiest to pickup/solo with. Also kinda sorted in reverse order of likelihood to get groups (so necro least likely with Cleric most likely. Though Shaman/Enchanter are pretty much tied).

If you absolutely have to be a melee then:
Monk

Followed by:
Shadow Knight
Paladin

Not highly recommended as starters:
Rogue
Warrior
Ranger (this will change after Velious, when the xp penalty is gone and they can fear animals so they can solo effectively when they need to).

Honorable mention: Wizard can solo level just fine as long as you have access to movement speed increases but they'll be very rarely invited to groups and significantly slower at solo leveling.

Left out of the list: Bard - No reason other then I hate 90% of solo bards.

What are you? Are you a spaz? Are you patient? Do you savor a challenge? Do you hate doing math? Do you love min maxing? Need more details :)

Like others have said, having more info about you (whether you want to group or solo, how often and how long you can play, whether you plan to reach level 50+ or not) would help inform the decision.

In the absence of that, I think the class which is friendliest to new players in general is Druid.

They can heal, solo, group, and are powerful at low levels. They fall off in power at higher levels (though they remain excellent soloers, and porting is always useful)

Very first ever character, Wood Elf Druid. You will love it. They can solo and teleport all over the place and make money doing it. They also have good utility in groups with damage shielding, healing, direct damage spells, and some crowd control with roots 'n snares. I don't think there is a better "first" class in the game.

If you are able to spend long stretches of time online, go with a class that needs to group - tanks, rogues, wizzes. If not roll a class that can solo - shammy, chanter, necro, druid... although I think the first two would be better choices to level to 60. Barb shaman is a great choice since it's easy to run around and explore and chances are you won't get ganked by a guard because you're an evil race!

Have fun!

Mg

If your going to make a shaman make it an iksar shaman or troll for the regen

Just play on red and go with whatever class sounds like the most fun to you.

Take a look at the guides section and read up on all classes that are spiking your interest. I played EQ from 00'-04' had a 55 warrior, 39 cleric, and 32 paladin and I still spend at least 30 minutes to an hour a day just reading guides and such. There is a plethora of information in the wiki that can help out a ton.
