View Full Version : What's with the tooth thing?

I've read around a few posts on p99 and have heard someone mention something about having to get teeth to beable to port into the specific zones in Velious... Anyone know if this applies to Druids/Wiz too? If so, how does it work? Thanks!

Yes they do - basically it's a system put in place that requires you to visit the Wiz/Druid portal before you can port/be ported there.
They are just bags on the ground inside the portals that respawn as soon as picked up, you keep them in your inventory. Think of them as a key.

The item respawns like every 10 seconds. It basically forces you to run to every zone at least once before you can utilize the port ins.

is this custom to promote the initial velious race? I dont remember it on live.

Ahh... And each key overwrites the other? So WL would overwrite all but CS? So imagine we/I need to run to WL asap.. lol

No, they don't overwrite. You have to keep them all.

The requirement was removed at some point, maybe in PoP?

Was removed before that.
http://www.tski.co.jp/baldio/patch/20011204.html
Velious portal teeth (Great Divide, Wakening Lands and Cobalt Scar) are no longer required to teleport to those locations. These items are also no longer soul bound.
The Luclin patch removed them.
But seriously. What a fucking stupid idea. Just like Wind portals requiring Kunark dungeon. The developers realized each were retarded mechanics and removed them a few months after the next expansion. So stupid.

Why so mad about classic server being classic?

Classic content I love.
Classic mistakes being repeated when the developers themselves later admit "yea that was pretty dumb" and remove those mechanics - stupid.
Wind ports
Velious teeth
Hybrid penalty
All very stupid. All retroactively changed because aforementioned stupidity. All lead to a better game after removed.

While that may be true, it has little to do with the purpose of this server (reliving the classic experience, faults and all).

I don't see what was wrong with the need to get 'flagged' for a port. Making it an item you have to carry with you at all times (thus eating inventory space) *was* stupid though. I would support a non-classic implementation where you have to hail an NPC @ each of the spires to get flagged to receive the teleport instead of gathering the teeth.
FFXI did basically the same thing with telecrystals at the Crags. Had to make the run at least once before you could port to it.

I assume initially it was just a technical limitation, thus why they added the keyring as a solution later on.

i think the next EMU project that learns from THIS project will be closer to live!@! 20 more years!!

I like old classic stuff like this. Anything that makes you complain about EQ and how long it takes to get something or do something. That's why we are all back to our home here in 99 instead of playing kid games like WoW.

Actually this tooth idea was kinda fun, and was part of the velious experience; getting that toof for each alt you had.
IN practise this was probably designed as a way to stop every one racing to NTOV on day one of expansion launch. Although on here am sure peeps have enough vel exp to be there and slaying dwagons within 24hs (assumin minimal crashes/patches)

No one was killing named in NTOV at Velious launch on Classic - people had no VP loot to speak of so they had to gear up with armor quests and easier raids first.

It will be interesting to see what all dies in the first 24 hours... lol

Tooth idea isn't fun. It's tedious nothing more. People confuse these two way too often.

As a champion of the bugs forum Daldaen, you should know it doesn't matter. It's classic, fun or not - therefore it has to be in game.

I should change my location to bugs forum... Some of these programs I use at work can take literally 30 minutes to calculate rendering my computer useless... Leading to lots of interneting on my phone.
I don't think it will change or be different here. I just stand by it was stupid and Verant agreed and removed it later down the line. Same with wind ports.

I disagree. Traveling is part of the game and having to run through ICO -> EW -> Kael -> WL -> SS -> CS with a sidetrack into GD while you're in EW to gather all the ports adds to the epicness of it. Especially considering how dangerous some of those zones can/will be, considering the dragons will be up and roaming at first launch.
Where it turns into tedium is when you have to do it for the 6th time on an alt. I could support just having to do it once per account to flag the whole account. The people who own 30 different characters all on different accounts just have to deal with it (or in the case of TMO; award extra loot to someone who runs everyones alts one at a time around to gather the teeth).

I was really looking forward to consolidating bag space taken up by resist gear, but it's just getting swapped out for keys.
So in my bag I'm gonna have:
Lockpicks
Seb Key
HS Key
VP Key
GD Tooth
WL Tooth
CS Tooth
ST Key
WTB Keyring, jeez. Forget anything?
Daldaen

Only need CS Tooth. It counts for others. But yes thats why Keyring was added, they realized how stupid forcing perma-inventory slots to access zones was dumb.
So Seb, HS, VP, ST, CS Tooth... oh and Skyshrine Key, maybe ToFS master key?

however now my bank is ungodly full too ugh
Maybe its time to think about that 7th bag....

Yea... I am hoarding a stupid amount of Epic MQ pieces and resist gear in bank. Though I am working on consolidating it.
Really is a shame they took until LoY to expand the bank

So if you die and the tooth/key is on your /corpse. Can you get a port into zone or will ya have to do nekid run to /corpse?
