View Full Version : Curious about max population
Was reading server info on EQEmu site:
Worldserver Name: Project 1999 - Classic Legit PVE Progression
Server Version: 0.8.0
Server Status: UP
Players Online: 407
Average Players: 469
Max Players: 903
Isn't it around 850+ at prime time now? What happens when that 904th person tries to log in. Que lines.
As the title says I'm just curious. Not playing a Chicken Little here.
*EDIT -
Never mind, it's early morning, my reading comprehension is off. Rereading after I posted, I'm sure that means the max that has been on.
Move along please, only thing here is the village idiot. O/

I think you are confused... It's not max players allowed... It's max that have ever been on at once. So when player 904 logs in, the new max will be.... 9@d. :)

So what's the max players *allowed* at the moment? 2-3k? Is Rogean's server equivalent to a 1999 SOE server?

SOE Didn't run the game on a single server. They were clustered to probably a dozen or two physical servers.
It's hard to tell exactly what type of setup they had.. they may have just had a physical server run the same zone for every game server.
There currently is no cap on allowed players.

I actually discussed this back in the day, after being yelled at for sending a tell directly to a GM. Oh no, I ruined their reply button... According to GM-Lead Admin Akkirus in mid-2000, Rallos Zek ran 15 zones per physical server (which were running Katmai core Xeons on Windows NT) and were due for an upgrade "in the coming months". I never spoke to him after the fact, and Lady Daegarmo during some undead event at a later date in Qeynos Hills said she had no idea about the new hardware or OS, it "wasn't her thing". I do know most of their bulk bandwidth was provided by Akamai, so you can only imagine the expenses involved to keep just one server chugging along.

They probably use akamai for stuff like patch files or media downloads, websites, etc.. which makes sense, they are a CDN. But for the game servers themselves I believe they run their own data center using a few tier 1 backbone providers.
