View Full Version : Spells: Spell sounds are all wrong from recent patch...

The Thread Necromancer

Logged my druid today.

Noticed that my frost nuke sounds like a buff...
my sup. camo. sounds like a root...
levitate sounds like canni...
the list goes on and on...

I did a search through the list of changes in the patch, the word "sound" doesn't appear. I'm assuming this is a bug of some sort with the patch? Confirmed this with other people as well -- spell sounds are sounding like other spells.

Probably has something to do with Telin's spell pack they forced on everyone.

Shaman epic click -> sounds like cancel magic
Canni -> sounds like cancel magic
Invis -> only generates sound AFTER the spell has gone off.
Poison line of spells -> sounds like a nuke
Disease line of spells -> sounds like a nuke
Gate -> sounds like a buff

Telin, your spell update is crap. How do I remove it?

All of these are 100% classic sound effects. It will take getting used to since you were used to non-classic sounds for so long. These sound effects are easy to research with the old spell database.

Such a dick thing to say.

Still haven't answered my question however. How do I remove it?

You'll figure it out with the use of google.

It's part of the actual patch, which won't let you log into your character after server select unless it is up to date with the version the server is using.

So you're stuck with this mismatched soundbyte madness.

Telin - The spell effects are great. I really do love the sharpness and the return to the old style for particles, however the sounds themselves are completely counter-intuitive to what the spell actually DOES.

Even if the spell sounds are classic (hard to say, recalling sound is harder than images), they make no logical sense.

Forcing a client-side change like this is unethical, even if these are the classic sounds. It would be like forcing people who prefer Luclin graphics to use Classic graphics, because "(bull)shit's classic." Fuck that, let people make their own decisions about their client when it doesn't affect game mechanics.

Even google search tends to agree:

Mute the shit, or better yet, quit. So many tears every time there is a patch. Get a life.

"Relive the classic Everquest MMORPG Gaming Experience as it was in 1999 and onward. Project 1999 is a free to play Emulated Everquest Server giving Players the opportunity to experience Classic EQ Once again, currently in the Kunark expansion and a max level of 60, with the look and feel of the old interface and several modifications making game mechanics similar to how the game used to be."

Front page, just sayin.

Figured out how to remove this bullshit forced spell particle "update" if anyone's interested:

Copy the original Spellsnew.eff, Spellsnew.edd, and Actoremittersnew.edd from your original install (main Everquest directory) and overwrite the new versions of those files from the recent "patch" (if you want to call it that). If you do not have backups of those files, you may need to make an isolated install on a separate drive so you can manually copy just those files over to your Everquest directory.

Sounds and particles the way they were.

These are all classic changes as far as I can tell.

As far as the effects and sounds being mandatory/forced upon you.. you're saying they are CRCed? I don't think so.

In the future, when creating a bug report, or replying to one, leave that bad attitude at the doorway.

From someone who played in 1999 the same class I'm playing now, some of the sounds are straight up wrong.

Either the spell database Telin is using is wrong or he skipped a row when importing stuff.

Cannibalize did not have the same spell sound as Cancel Magic in 1999-2001, for example.

You'll hear Cannibalize @ 2:50. The beginning sound was different, and what was being played at the beginning here was the ending sound in classic. There wasn't a bursting sound effect at the end. This video is from the Trilogy Client.

you mean to tell me that people actually play with the sound volume higher than 0%?

Not entirely related to OP and I'm not sure if it's just on my end but whenever fire elemental pets cast their dmg spell I'm seeing the violet undead dd spell effect.

The bursting sound is whats missing - where is the proof it wasn't there in classic+Kunark? Because it apparently is in Velious if they are using the Trilogy client.

Don't let these people discourage you from helping make the server classic Telin.

Invis -> only generates sound AFTER the spell has gone off.

after watching the video i vividly remember this one now, actually added to the effect to not hear it until after you visually stopped seeing yourself

Druid spells from Classic client which include the beginning of invisibility spells sounding like wind:

I haven't experimented with these in game, but the video is exactly how I remember them. I have not used in game sound since I started raiding around 2000, so these are the only sounds I remember.
