Disappointed with this book. It could have been a great story but the writing is ultimately shallow and flat and the protagonist is a dumb, arrogant, unlikeable bitch. I've been wishing she would just die in the arena already...

I haven't read a good book in this genre since The Light Bearer and that was forever ago.

Anyone know of any other exceptional novels set in ancient Rome or thereabouts?

Blindsight by Peter Watts (http://www.amazon.com/Blindsight-Peter-Watts/dp/0765319640)

"Two months have passed since a myriad of alien objects clenched about the Earth, screaming as they burned. The heavens have been silent since—until a derelict space probe hears whispers from a distant comet. Something talks out there: but not to us. Who should we send to meet the alien, when the alien doesn’t want to meet?"

Well, back then I knew what the parables were supposed to teach and what the lessons you were supposed to learn were, what some random psalm was about, etc. But I was just a kid. Big difference between knowing the answers to questions and understanding those answers and what good they are, or between knowing the history of a poem and being able to relate to it. Easier to avoid getting hung up on the "details" now too.

And if you want to know more about the fate of her son, the dauphin, after the executions of the king and queen I highly recommend "The Lost King of France: How DNA Solved the Mystery of the Murdered Son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette" by Deborah Cadbury. Lets turn this thread into a book suggestion thread, itll quickly run out of steam unless we read 2 books a week =)

My favorite reads are science fiction, and i would love some suggestions as i dont have the time to filter all the crap, since i have many interests.

Heres a couple of science fiction books i really enjoyed and suggest:

Pre-apocalyptic tale, in the form of a diary of a 12 year old girl, as shit hits the fan in Manhattan:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d6/Randomactspaperback.jpg

Cyberpunk classic, with a main story and a couple of short stories at the end that cover the later years of the story explored in the first main one. Humanity is split among many factions, 2 being the mechanists (Cyborgs) and the shapers(genetic engineers):
http://thereisnogenre.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/schismatrix1.jpg

A ship that drifts through space with thousands of inhabitants that forgot what was the ships mission when it was first set off in space, generations ago:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a0/Ship_of_Fools%2C_Richard_Paul_Russo_%28book_cover% 29.jpg/200px-Ship_of_Fools%2C_Richard_Paul_Russo_%28book_cover% 29.jpg

A collection of short stories, uneven id say but the one called rogue farm and the story with the 2 bear things are worth the cover price alone:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b0/Live_Without_a_Net_by_Lou_Anders.jpg

This one not science fiction really, but dark fantasy and really interesting. Its a collection of short stories, the story called cram i thought was especially good.

Only time audiobooks are acceptable are if you're taking a long car trip, or if you're blind imo. Personally i find the physical act of reading enjoyable and it ruins it for me when i hear some narrator doing character voices and stuff.

So, anyways... I have a serious question for the busy people who use audiobooks for reasons of convenience and/or lack of free time to sit down with a book... If you suddenly had more time and it didn't make a difference in your life either way, which method would you prefer the most? Old-school or audiobook?

I have yet to try the audiobook thing. I'm concerned that there is too much potential for stories that I love to become corny and ridiculous with someone reading every word aloud while changing character voices, playing out dramatic scenes, etc... (They do change character voices, right? Cuz I really don't know. :o)

I also wonder if audiobooks ever make a listener feel awkward during certain stories. :D

It really depends on the reader. Neuromancer is read by William Gibson himself and i really enjoyed it. It has a music for different scenes, electronic music, well done. Same with the dark tower audio book. Some are just a robot reader and those are really bad, and i had to stop the audio book version of Menzoberanzzan because the reader was unbearable. Kinda depends how much effort was put into it.

They're best for stuff like listening to stuff while you're doing stuff. This way you can read a novel while you're doing the mindless grind of farming bone chips, camping Quillmane's ph, doing the
dishes, shoveling snow, or riding your bike because the cops took your license.

First book I got my hands(ears) on was Silence of the Lambs as read by Kathy Bates. I've listened to two 28-hour unabridged novels(Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns Read by the author, Khaled Hosseini) and books with two different voice actors doing separate recordings (the Fault in our Stars, read by the author John Green by popular demand, and another by an actress) and ones read by an entire cast of phenomenal actors(Ender's Game).

Does it get awkward with a male reader doing female parts? Only for the reader. This is why John Green hired someone to read his, since the main character was a 16-year-old girl and he was afraid it would be weird. You'll see; actors just change their inflection and tone for different gender characters. It's not done to a ridiculous amount.

EXCEPT..... one notable exception was 50 Shades of Grey as read by Gilbert Gotfried.

Man it can not be stressed enough how much of a difference the reader makes when it comes to audiobooks. The Wheel of Time has some of the best readers (they're a husband and wife pair who switch out who's reading depending on if the chapter is from the perspective of a man or woman) I've ever listened to and that's literally the only way I can get through the middle books in the series anymore.

I like audio books. I rememeber my first audio book. It was James Earl Jones reading The Raven. Ever since that .. I try for audio books whenever feasible.

I recommend the audio book The Raven as read by James Earl Jones. Audio books.

Like I've said in other threads, I listen to audio books everyday at work. The ASOIAF series read by Roy Dotrice is amazing and I'm on my second listen through (just finished SOS again.)

I'm not sure if I could go back to reading if a series has a good voice actor doing it. Tried reading the Drizzt compilation but I wasn't a big fan of it.

I read it. Was good. Not quite as interesting to me as Wheel of Time, then again I am 35 now and was 15 when I started WOT. Also, the second book just came out this week. It is supposed to be 10 books long 'at least'. So I think this series will end around the time I am 55. Not so excited about that.

For DMing this weekend.

I used to play 2nd edition about 15 years ago, recently played a few sessions of 4E at a game store(11 players...3 hours = one fight encounter)....

I recently bought Aces and Eights and it is by far the most detailed and complex rule system I've ever dealt with. It took a solid 5 hours to roll up some characters even with extensive DnD knowledge, and that's not even finishing off background history and explanation for certain skills, quirks, and flaws.

It's definitely worth a gander if you have any interest in a tabletop RPG based on an alternate USA old west history.

Fortunately, I've read a string of entertaining books lately. If you're into science/science history and/or biographies of influential people, I recommend these books.

I'm currently reading a biography on Paul Dirac. He was a peculiar character that fits into and helped define a lot of stereotypes of modern mathematicians and eccentric scholars. One of the pioneers of quantum physics.

Quite an interesting story about the man that helped to spearhead America's efforts to make nuclear weapons. With the details on how the FBI kept him and his friends illegally wiretapped and surveilled, it makes you wonder about what's really going on today under our noses.

http://tkshare.com/pic/allimg/111031/8_111031135111_1.jpg
If you're into Einstein, this is yet another biography of the famed theorist. I will say that out of the 3 or 4 books I've read specifically on Einstein over the years, Walter Isaacson's book stood out the most. I actually downloaded this one on audiobook after reading it the first time.

http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320429919l/3269091.jpg
The book follows the lives and achievements of Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch. It puts into perspective the issues facing the early 20th century with an ever expanding global population and the 'giants' that set out to create solutions to the problem; and to profit from it. It also illustrates the close connection between the private sector chemical industry, military, and government and how notorious mega-corporations like IG Farben come to be.

Other books I've enjoyed recently:
The Demon Under The Microscope: From Battlefield Hospitals to Nazi Labs, One Doctor's Heroic Search for the World's First Miracle Drug also by Thomas Hager (Author of The Alchemy of Air listed above). It tells the story of how medicine was transformed by the chemical industry in the early 20th century.

Wizard: The Life and Time of Nikola Tesla by Marc J. Seifer. A favorable look at his life and contributions to modern engineering and how he helped to shape the modern electrical age while being used and snubbed by people such as Thomas Edison and J.P. Morgan. He was a very eccentric individual.

I haven't read any fantasy books since reading all of the Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman Dragonlance novels.

TL;DR: Look at the pictures. Books are guhd.

Glad someone caught it!

Also on the topic of reading, What do most prefer Paperback or digital?

I personally cannot stand reading digital. I lose my place way to easy, it hurts my eyes starting at the screen even the kindle that have the lowbacklight or whatever, i prefer having the feel of a book in my hand and actually flipping pages.

besides someday I would like a library in my house of all ive read and something tells me that a kindle by itself in a blank room wouldn't be all that impressive :p
