Missing or long forgotten items?

When looking through old data on the Wayback machine, I came across the following item:

Werewolf Skin
WAR/BRD usable
30 AC, 1.0 Weight
Clicky: Illusion Werewolf

Which supposedly drops from "Magreck" in Mistmoore.

Has this or does this item exist on p99? Could it have been the result of a GM event (although most that are have a mention of it being from a GM event)?

Could we get these types of custom GM items in p99 if we discover custom GM rewards (they are much more interesting than GM rewards that always give out Guise etc.).

From what I've read, it was a level 50 mob in Mistmoore that got removed sometime before Kunark. Its other drop was apparently a no drop belt with 41% haste and no other stats.

Probably not too many people were successfully killing it before it was removed (and may have tried to keep it somewhat secretish), which is why I assume the information is scarce.

Hard to tell without the item ID to be honest. There was a tool back then to spoof items with though, and Alla's didn't have the best fact checking.

I would bet something from beta that got nuked with Mayong.

It should be dropping off either low level Griffons, or off of Kithicor himself (assuming he is in Kith forest on p99).

Either it exists on p99 and no one has ever added to the Wiki or /auctioned it, but I've never seen one.

Drop Info:

This dropped off Magrek, a level 50 female dark elf caster mob who spawnson the top floor of Castle Mistmoore at approximately loc –81.29, -103.19, -159.19.


Nerf/Removal Info:

This item was removed in the spring of 2000 because it threatened the uniqueness of the planar drops. The mob disappeared as well soon after.



Personal Comment:

This was one of the items that made Mistmoore as legendary as it was. And contrary to urban myth, this was never part of Mayong Mistmoore’s loot table. The original MM was never killed, not even in beta, so no one knows what his loot table looked like

I responded to that guide in the bugs forum, a large # of the items are Velious or post-classic.

There's only a few items that P99 "missed" and that's only because more research / information is needed. The Magrek drops are one of those, as well as the droppable 41% haste belt from draco. P99 did everything else pretty much accurately.

The guide misses some other stuff, like original Pegasus Cloaks being instant click (not retroactively nerfed). They were never that way here, for some reason.

Burden of proof is on someone to find a screenshot of the mob, or a reference to the actual item in a database. It's not going to happen.

If you look at the links I provided, the static page listing of items by slot was how Allakhazam recorded items up until just before Velious launch (at which point he started the actual Lucy item DB with item IDs for each item).

If a mob was in classic only and no one with the item updated to send it to Lucy after the transition, it wouldn't have an item ID/entry, as that database is player compiled, not ripped from the game.

There's no screenshots of the mob, no database entry from anyone ever having/linking the item in the years since, and I spent a lot of time in MM back in 99 without ever seeing/hearing about that mob. There's pretty much no evidence of it existing other than a submission to alla (and people mentioning hearing rumors of it, probably as a result of the hoax) and an easily doctored shot of the item.

It's possible it was a beta mob, or a GM event, but illusion: werewolf is a ridiculously OP click for a warrior compared to what else was available during the era.

was probably in Beta as it sounds like there was some pushing and tugging to have high lvl encounters within Mistmoore's castle

then with the obviously huge gap in levels between the yard trash and the master of the house they probably deemed the zone to be more of a leveling zone for 20ies-30ies rather than keep stuff in there for 50ies to come and kill.

Also, take a look at the screenshot of the item and compare it to a trakanon BP on the same link. Now compare it to the Rubicite breastplate screenshot. At some point around the launch of Kunark, they changed items to look a bit sleeker when right clicked with a smaller, tighter font.

If the SS of the werewolf skin were real, it's from after the era where the font was changed. If it's an actually an old item from beta/early mistmoore, then someone waited a very long time to submit a screenshot.

Level: 41 or 42 (conned yellow to a 40)
HP: 4000 to 4500
Hit for max 108's
Cast shaman spells: Scourge, Togor's Insects, and a couple more. (Did NOT cast a pet)

After keeping everything from the pit to the tower dead for many many hours, he spawned on the bridge connected to the tower. He was a piece of cake for a mid 50's group. Instead of the Werewolf Skin, he dropped for us a Werewolf Tail (All All, no drop, 8 ac, 1 wt, Haste Belt).

So far my guild has logged about 50 hours of camping him, and since we've only seen him the once, we're thinking it's a triggered spawn of some sort. (For the record, he spawned last sunday night). Good luck to everyone on their camp :)

Magreck may be a triggered spawn or a hoax ( be nice to run into him and kill though )

pre-kunark everything was camped to beyond camped, and there's just not a lot of mobs that lived longer than 10 seconds in the higher end zones, just cause there wasn't anything to do


it's just impossible for me to think that there was a high end mob that dropped high end items that no one's ever heard of


a clicky illusion item and/or a 41% haste item would not go unnoticed
