Liking all these suggestion thread, so why not one on science fiction movies!

Lets try to resist the temptation to post obvious stuff like alien, which we all know is a masterpiece :) Maybe if youre gonna post movies older than 2000, try to get some titles that are obscure a bit.

Now im gonna name some that are obvious a bit, just to get them out of the way

Movies i saw recently that were pretty good:

The duncan jones movies:

- Moon and source code (Like Moon alot more but source code still allrite)

Alfonso Cuarzon movies:

- Children of men, Gravity (Awesome movie, totally regret not seeing this on the big screen)

--

- Judge Dredd. Im not familiar with the comics. Apparently the comic is a satire of fascism where the movie just went straight fascist without any satire in it. Still enjoyed the visuals very much and worth seeing just for that. Soundtrack meshing well with movie as well.

- City of Ember, with a nice part played by Bill Murray. Makes me think of fallout a bit, not great but pretty enjoyable

- Melancholia, First part of the movie... not gonna spoil stuff but stick it out to the 2nd part, its worth it. Not a pew pew explosion type of movie but really good.

- Super8, sort of Goonies with spaceships and aliens, pretty cool

- Monsters, aliens land on earth (IIRC) and some zones are quarantined, 2 journalists need to make their way from mexico to the US hitchin rides

Alphaville (not the band!) - A 1965 French film, but still good. Very Orwellian scifi noir. Trenchcoat-wearing secret agent man vs Skynet.

So keeping in mind that everyone's definition of obscure and science fiction are quite different, heres some movies!

The Man From Earth (2007) - I think this film is just incredible. It is more interesting, engaging, and thought provoking than 99% of movies and it essentially takes place in 1 room. It's just a good story, a good script, and good acting.

Pandorum (2009) - This movie is a lot like alien, a futuristic sci fi horror type of film. It has greats sets and practical effects and such ( I'm a sucker for that stuff ) over all a really cool film that most people don't seem to know about? question mark?

The Black Hole (1979) - To me this is obscure because I never heard about it until 2013 lol. The film was made by Disney ( so it's gotta be good right? ) The story is pretty much 20,000 leagues under the sea, but in space. Once again, very cool visuals and sets and miniatures and all that stuff ( and music! ).

Primer (2004) - This is a cool time travel film that was made with $7,000 I believe. The writing and the story kept me watching it, again more interesting than most big budget movies imo.

The Prestige (2006) - I'd probably call this a drama or mystery movie but it's got science fiction elements, and David Bowie,.. so I'm putting it in here! This is one of my most favorite movies ever, I think it's just incredible. It's a Victorian period ( I think ) story about two rival magicians. Its a Christopher Nolan film ( his best one imo ) so I'm surprised that I have never heard anyone mention it, ever..... so watch it!

I feel like all the best obscure ones were hit on... but here's a list in reverse chronology from 2013>2000 (and one is b4 and out of order). Of somewhat less mainstream Sci-Fi that I enjoyed, even the campy B ones, which had triple A budgets but some how didn't reach mass popularity.

Their all worth a watch on a slow day.

Oblivion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oblivion_%282013_film%29) <-- is tom cruise more sexy than his leading partner??? IDK... lol )
John Carter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carter_%28film%29) <-- fuckin elite old school, done new.
Cloud Atlas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Atlas_%28film%29) <-- I loved this one, for the visuals, and the deep, rich storytelling.
Battleship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship_%28film%29) <-- fun military, kill da aliens. Rock'n'Roll.
Rise of the Planet of Apes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rise_of_the_Planet_of_the_Apes) <-- best ape movie ever.
Inception (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inception)
Outlander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlander_%28film%29) <- space vikings...
I Am Legend. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Legend_%28film%29)
Eden Log (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden_Log)
Ultraviolet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraviolet_%28film%29)
Æon Flux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86on_Flux_%28film%29)
Cube Zero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_Zero) <-- see also the other "Cube" movie
Cube 2: Hypercube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_2:_Hypercube)
Cube (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cube_%28film%29)
Appleseed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appleseed_%28film%29) <- Not GiTS, almost as good
Timeline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_%28film%29) <- like the book
S1m0ne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S1m0ne)
Minority Report (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minority_Report_%28film%29) <-- there's a for real ever-quest joke in this movie
Equilibrium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equilibrium_%28film%29)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.I._Artificial_Intelligence)
Red Planet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Planet_%28film%29) <- bad, but FOR MOTHER RUSSIA SPACE AGENCY OF THE USSR YA!
Mission to Mars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_to_Mars) <- not so bad

I'de also throw I, Robot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343818/) up in that mix, be surprised if you haven't seen it already. No it's not the book, but the movie is good, especially if you don't read.

Pandorum is pretty slow now that I think about it, and even when things start happening the story is pretty dull I guess, reminds me a lot of Event Horizon actually, in that sense, I still like the setting / atmosphere / visuals though.

Theres a really cool ghost story in season 2

Assuming everyone here saw this but again gonna post it anyway:

The road with Viggo Mortgensen (spellinglol) Not a fan of the syrupy sentimentality but top notch post-apocalyptic visuals throughout

Viggo lines more annoying than the kid, the kid annoyed me at first but thats not a kid that had a happy childhood, thats a traumatized kid. Once you view it within that framework, the kid isnt so annoying anymore

I think its great Mortgensen took a role in a movie like this after basically not needing to work for the rest of his life probably because of LOTR

I hear ya, and I seen the rangers side of the story. But I would like to hear what the greys have to say for themselves to, namean? and We been getting into it with them longer than dulce IMO... greendawg and pyramid, common callsigns picked up over radio for a long time...

Just cause the mass media says greys are "scary, bad and evil" is not good enough for me.

I've also seen greys looking pathetic and sick and tortured, which, if it's not to be believed as a hoax, pulls my heartstrings.

Just like anything we don't know who really fired the 1st shot. And so what if the greys did out of fear? Do we really have to lock up others for what happened in Dulce?

Imagine, your down in your cave/hive minding your own business and a Ranger just busts in through your cieling? Might you not respond with a bit of force automatically by reflex?

No one is accusing these guys of being enlightened.

Not to mention if they are far different biologically or bio mechanically and UKNOWN that natural fear on both sides is going to be overwhelming. People are afraid of insects because of this factor to a large degree. Smell alone... the way something moves. Creepy as hell if your not familiar comftorble... Hence people who know when a predatory big cat might attack vs people who don't. Greys-humans have a similar bridge to cross.

Think about it... their fear aura is not a psychic ability, or it might be enhanced by their uncanny perception, but we don't know.

Because everything I've seen has been conspiracy or government coverup.

Wish I really knew the truth on that one.

No one busted through anyone's ceiling. Everyone was friends until one of our guys questioned a Grey and he went crazygonuts on the rest of our guys. Plus the fact they were kidnapping and torturing far more people than the treaty allows.

The media would actually have you believe otherwise.

At that particular time, we had drilled four distinct holes in the desert and we were going to link them together and blow
out large sections at a time. My job was to go down the holes and check the rock samples, then recommend the
explosive to deal with a particular rock. As I was headed down there , we found ourselves amidst a large cavern that
was full of outer-space aliens, otherwise known as large Greys. I shot two of them. At that time, there were 30 people
down there.

About 40 more came down after this got started and all of them got killed. We had surprised a whole underground base
of existing aliens. Later, we found out that they had been living on our planet for a long time, perhaps a million years. This
could explain a lot of what is behind the theory of ancient astronauts."

"Anyway I got shot in the chest with one of their weapons, which was a box on their body, that blew a hole in me and
gave me a nasty dose of cobalt radiation. I have had cancer because of that."

"I didn't get really interested in UFO technology until I started work at Area 51, north of Las Vegas. After about two
years recuperating after the 1979 incident, I went back to work for Morrison and Knudson, EG&G and other
companies. At Area 51, they were testing all kinds of spacecraft. How many people here are familiar with Bob Lazar's
story? He was a physicist working at Area 51 trying to decipher the propulsion factor in some of these craft".

Surprised, keyword, it was not planned. - no one told those guys they were going to run into the Greys.

The kidnapping is most likely condoned by our government. Many grey abductees have had positive experiences with them, even if the greys were very forceful on their own terms.

I've seen videos of Phil Schneider talking. It was a clusterfuck and him and his team should not have been there.

By the way it was humans that killed him. Doubt greys would have bothered with piano wire.

Thread old, was trying to derail. But got to admit, derail is legit. And sci-fi related... books to be written, movies to be made about this Grey thing.

The quiet earth is a really good post-apocalyptic movie

Not the pew pew 1999: Bronx Warriors type but still

Other post-apocish movies:

- Mad Max trilogy
- Blood of heroes (its got rutger Hauer)
- Until the end of the world (5 hour long movie, arthouse style with William hurt)
- Reign of fire
- La jetée (short '62 movie that inspired 12 monkeys, find it on torrents)
Oh shit how did i forget
- Hobo with a shotgun (get it right now thank me later, its also got Rutger)
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssHEAOrAdCU
Roy Batty in Blade Runner is one of my fave character in scifi movies and its a nice way to sort of close the loop with his character in Hobo
- A man and his dog
- Idiocracy

More cyberpunkish:

- Strange days
- Running man
- Total recall
- V for Vendetta

Just looked up The purge, gonna get right on that

Cowboys and Aliens
In Time, 2011 was pretty good and very contemporary, set in the near future, so Sci Fi IMO.

Also southland tales is quite possibly the most wtf movie of all time and should be viewed 3 -4 times before words are spoken of it. It uses the logic of a fake book from DONNIE DARKO, 3 prequel comics, a translation of the book of revelation, and a Fake screenplay leaked from the movie to begin understand. The most esoteric pice of movie I have ever seen. Also there is a pirated only (as far as I have found) cannes cut that is longer and makes even less sense. I love it so much.

Signs was awesome. I went into that movie thinking they were going to toy with us with the thought of aliens and pull the rug out from under us and have some other explanation for the signs.

signs was terrible. water hurts aliens so they go to a planet that has an atmosphere of water? and i've read that demon theory too.
