Awesome! I adore this topic, as there are just so many fantastic music videos out there.

1 - The Avalanches

A group of friends who decided they wanted to form a band went to a bunch of different shops, but couldn't find instruments they wanted. Instead, they found a bunch of boxes of vinyl albums (around 3000). So, they proceeded to take sound clips from the albums, the bass lines, the vocals, and manipulate them, and stack them atop each other to make entirely new music. Their album has been a pretty good success, with a new album having been on the way for a decade and a half now.

The single best music video ever is The Avalanches - Since I Left You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpqm-05R2Jk). It is such a pretty song, and such a fantastic video, but ultimately very bittersweet at the end. This is definitely a video to watch twice. You can also find a video that has identified some of the audio files sampled for the making of the song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zehvICx-Rsg)

Also see The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLrnkK2YEcE) sampling heavily from the comedy stylings of the legendary comedy duo, Wayne and Schuster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_and_Shuster). You can hear the samples here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpWjNuMGh8I).

2- Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd is widely known, so no introduction is necessary to their incredibly powerful and bitchin' music video for Goodbye Blue Sky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kGOAWnvyWA) from The Wall, animated by Gerald Scarfe. And who can forget the notorious What Shall We Do Now? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS_FCbQ-okM) that featured music only in the film, that was not on the album itself.

3- Little Dragon

No biography that I could write would be sufficient. Those of you who are fans of The Gorillaz will know Little Dragon from her work with Gorillaz on their album Plastic Beach in the song Empire Ants.

Nevertheless, the music videos are fascinating. Crystalfilm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDVrTYW2l84) is a peculiar video that comes across as a bit unsettling. Along with this, and a bit more depressing, Twice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yedD4JsZyT0) is a music video featuring shadow art to tell the story, rather than the lyrics.

4- Massive Attack

Massive Attack is a musical group to come out of Bristol, incorporating traditional psychadelic rock with some more new age styles, to create a music style often referred to as "trip hop" or "acid jazz", although the lead singer, Robert Del Naja ("3D" for short), dislikes the categorization. Their work covers a vast array. Awarded numerous times, they directly trace their earlier styles back to Pink Floyd, as well as numerous other great artists.

Perhaps their most famous individual song to date is Unfinished Sympathy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWmrfgj0MZI), which features a music video which was ripped off of by The Verge for Bittersweet Symphony. Additionally, through the song, you can see the band members in the blurred background.

Their second album features a drastic change in musical style from the first, with the best in my view being the title track, Protection (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Epgo8ixX6Wo).

Their third album was the height of the band, and has plenty of songs you all will know. Teardrop was used as the introduction music to the TV show House, and the song Dissolved Girl can be heard in Neo's headphones at the beginning of the Matrix. The most interesting music video on this album likely goes to the first track, Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbe3CQamF8k), the music of which tragically was not used for the TV show Angel, but was used as the main title screen music for the popular video game Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines. The music video is fascinating to think about.

5- Gorillaz

Gorillaz is a widely popular, although currently former, animated band run by Damon Albarn (music) and Jamie Hewlett (art). Known for mixing electric style prog-rock styles with hip-hop traditional to artistic duos such as Deltron 3030, Gorillaz has numerous music videos that contain a story that goes behind the music into the chaotic and dangerous world that the band itself are surviving in while making their music.

Featuring the vocals of the great Bobby Womack who was convinced to come out of retirement by his daughter, who loved the Gorillaz, Stylo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhPaWIeULKk) features a car chase as 2D (the lead singer of the band, named after Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack, aka 3D) is being brought by Murdoc (the bassist) and his mechanical copy of their guitarist, Noodle, to the Plastic Beach, the new home of the Gorillaz. However, they have a hit out on their lives.

Why a mechanical version of their guitarist? Because in their second album, Demon Days, Noodle was shot down and presumed dead in El Manana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4wkPoVILSQ). Noodle was presumed dead until awoken upon a ship (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04mfKJWDSzI) as Murdoc leads his army of musicians to the Plastic Beach. Adrift at sea, she encounters Russel, the band's drummer, who has become irradiated and made into a gargantuan.

Regardless if you like them or not, you should give them props for being interesting in regards to weaving a narrative through all their work to date.

6- Royksopp

Last, but in absolutely no way least, Royksopp is a musical duo from Sweden that has made a number of successful songs in the past, with as creative and interesting music videos as one can imagine. Compared to the other bands, Rokysopp is more party themed, based on being more groovy than unnerving.

Although many people know the music to their most famous song, Remind Me, it was earlier on that album that one of their most interesting music videos appeared, Poor Leno (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4px0qQrG5E).

For all you old school gamers, this music video will be particularly attractive, Happy Up Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51Bpx63wkbA) from their album, Junior. Don't know why at first glance? Watch it, and I assure you you'll see why.

And in conclusion for Royksopp, and in a sharp turn away in overall sound, What Else Is There (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADBKdSCbmiM) displays a great deal of haunting, dark sounds relative to their other songs, with an equally dark music video. Interesting fact, the creepy Elizabethian lady in the music video is actually the singer, and the woman flying around as a ghost is just a model.

Wow been so long since i heard Goodbye blue sky, such a good song. When i was 13 that video struck me more as trippy but looking at it older you see right away the post-/apocalyptic scifi vibe to it.

Still watching some of your links, enjoyed the Gorillaz ones and Royskopp space invader one.

Ive had a guy grab my ass with both hands in a bar while i was almost catatonic drunk. That guy in the video would probably have decked him in the mouth. I just turned around and gave him a huge grin like not gonna happen buddy. That grin probably looked like your avatar lol

Such a tired story - god I want to bitch slap Roger Waters - but what a great album.

What's funny is their next album (and last, as the four of them) The Final Cut was basically the same whiny bullshit that was almost entirely Roger.

The best songs on The Wall were written by David Gilmour.

Yeah, Roger Waters got what he had coming to him though. I remember him discussing that when Pink Floyd got back together as Gilmour, Wright, and Mason, they made their first album apart from him, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. He was doing a concert for one of his albums, and next door he could hear Pink Floyd playing, and he realized that he had fucked up, lol.

The Final Cut was, if I remember correctly from Mason's band biography (as the only member to have always been in the band), the songs that the band had rejected from The Wall. With Roger believing he was all hot shit, he decided to force them to make them into a follow up album, which lead to Wright leaving the band/being fired, depending on how and when the story is told. Gilmour pointed out that all these songs were rejected for being bad, but Roger didn't care, and that's when Mason and Gilmour decided to just finish the album, and be done.

I like to think that Roger did get humbled in time, and realized that he was far too greedy and self-centered, and that's why he has tried to make amends since they played together at Live8 back in '05.

Still, all things considered, they had 3 back to back absolutely fantastic albums: Dark Side of the Moon - Wish You Were Here - Animals, and few bands ever achieve that. Their later works were also good, but you could tell they were missing Roger's side, and their earlier works were good, but you could tell they had not yet found the style that would define those central works (Still great pieces like Echoes though).

Yeah, Roger needed a punch in the face at the time.

now i wonder if roger was actually "pink" other than sid as being the obvious guess

It was heavily autobiographical for Roger. The main inspiration was during the tour for Animals, Roger spit in the face of one of his fans because they were dancing and shouting and having a good time, and Roger was certain that they were not actually listening to and appreciating the music. So he spit at them, and after that, got very retrospective. He started to think he isolated himself from his audience, which inspired him to write The Wall, where the fans wouldn't see them doing their music, and could do nothing but listen to it.

So he took his life, the death of his father in World War 2, and splashed it in with Syd's drug OD, and created the character Pink. Pink is ultimately a very self-loathing, self-destructive individual due to the mental wall he builds around himself through the film, starting with the death of his father (from Roger), his difficulty in school (also Roger, note that the poem the school teacher rips on him for in the film are the lyrics to Money from Dark Side of the Moon), and eventually even the drugs (Syd) and his wife's cheating (no attribution as far as I know). The problem is, Pink is also shown to perceive himself as a Hitler-esque figure, perhaps in thinking that he is the reason there have been so many issues in his life and so it is he that is killing off all that is good about himself, domineering over an army of fans that are blindly following him. It is rather telling about Roger as a person who, at the time, was become increasingly dictatorial about the direction of Pink Floyd which eventually lead to the splitting up of the band for a short time before Gilmour got the band back together for a solid and a fan-fucking-tastic album.

Yeah. It is a neat film, and very neat album, but it is clearly very angsty.

that ego thing can fuck up some shit and get some shit made though. i haven't read a lot of interviews about pink floyd, but i'm a huge fan. i know that waters got booted for being a dick, and i'd have to say that he doesn't seem to have coped well enough with being an entertainer.

Which was actually said to them by the first label to pick them up. They quickly moved on to other labels.

It wasn't so much that Roger was booted, as much as it was that everyone else quit, and then reformed later without him. He even tried to due them for still being called Pink Floyd without him.

He didn't cope well, but I think he has lightened up a lot more in the last decade.

What he has not calmed down about is his political activism. I think that's where he channeled all of his pent up energy so that he could play music without being such a douche about it. In regards to his career, he seems to be more or less cool and chill, but he is still a very loud and outspoken political activist. That isn't a problem in my book, personally.
